How to search and pay Johnson County property tax

Open the Johnson County Tax Office searchStart from the official tax-office search page, not an ad, map listing or another state’s Johnson County website.
Use the strongest identifier you haveAccount number is best when it is printed on your statement. Otherwise use owner name, owner mailing address or the actual property location.
Use the portal’s formatting rulesAccount numbers require dashes. For owner name, enter last name plus first name or first initial. For property location, enter street number plus street name and omit street type/direction.
Search both paid and unpaid when researchingIf you are checking payment history or an older year, do not limit the search to unpaid accounts only.
Open the correct accountMatch owner, property location, legal description, tax year, levy, amount due, exemptions and taxing-jurisdiction breakdown.
Check every property you ownThe Tax Office warns that different accounts can appear under different names or spellings; staff research that misses one account does not automatically waive later penalty or interest.
Choose a payment method after verifying the balanceCompare the $1.50 eCheck fee with the 2.4% credit-card fee before paying a large bill.
Save proof and reopen the accountKeep the receipt, confirmation, check image or payment-history record until the account shows the expected balance.

Due date, post-deadline penalties and attorney referral

Johnson County says statements are normally mailed around October and are due on receipt. January 31 is normally the last day to pay without penalty and interest; taxes become delinquent February 1. If January 31 falls on a weekend or legal state/national holiday, the next-business-day rule applies.

February — general schedule: 7%Penalty and interest begin after the standard delinquency date.
March — 9%Use the live account balance instead of manually adding percentages.
April — 11%Some accounts and installment situations follow different rules.
May — 13%Confirm whether an exemption or appraisal change postponed the delinquency date.
June — 15%Accounts not paid in full by June 30 may be referred to delinquent-tax attorneys.
July — 18% + up to 20%The office warns of an additional collection penalty of up to 20% after attorney referral; each month after July can add another 1% interest.
Do not use this table as a payoff calculator. The official page says the general schedule does not apply to every situation, including some quarter-payment accounts and value/exemption changes. Use the live account or request a payoff.
If full payment is difficult

Partial payments and four-installment option

Partial payments

The Tax Office says it accepts partial payments. Penalty and interest apply only to the portion that remains unpaid.

Practical use: Paying part of the balance can reduce the amount still exposed to future penalty and interest, but it does not make the remaining balance current.
Who may use four installments?

Owners who qualify for an over-65, disabled or disabled-veteran exemption may pay current taxes due on their home in four installments.

First quarter — before February 1Pay at least one-fourth of the total and note that you are paying in installments.
Second quarter — March 31Keep proof and verify that the payment was applied to the installment plan.
Third quarter — May 31Missed installments can trigger a 6% penalty plus 1% interest per delinquent month.
Fourth quarter — July 31Confirm the account is fully settled after the final payment.
Missed first installment: The FAQ says the remaining three-installment option can still be preserved if the first payment is made before March 1; penalty and interest apply to that late first payment, while later installments avoid them if timely.

Near January 31?

The Tax Office uses the U.S. Postal Service cancellation mark as the payment date when the envelope is properly addressed with correct postage. Near the deadline, the office recommends taking the envelope inside the Post Office to help ensure a timely cancellation mark.

Timing rules that can prevent an avoidable late payment
MethodWhat controls timingUser action
USPS mailPostal Service cancellation/postmarkKeep postal proof and mail early.
FedEx/UPS/common carrierCarrier receipt date when the carrier took possessionA label-created date alone is not enough.
Bank bill payThe institution still needs time to deliver/process paymentSchedule well before delinquency.
No statement does not normally erase the tax or deadline. Johnson County says property owners are responsible for checking the account if they do not receive a bill. The FAQ also notes a special small-balance practice: statements below $1 are normally not mailed, with penalty/interest treatment governed by the Tax Code until the combined balance reaches the stated threshold.
