Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector: Search, Pay & Offices

San Antonio · Bexar County tax action guide

Search, Pay or Fix a Bexar County Tax Account

If you searched for the Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector, you likely need a property-tax account search, a payment route, an office location, a phone number, or the correct place to fix an appraisal issue.

This guide separates the Tax Office from BCAD, explains the official ACT search format, and shows what to do before paying online, calling, mailing a check, visiting a branch, requesting a certificate, or renewing vehicle registration.

Do not pay from a search result alone. Bexar County has a Tax Assessor-Collector, a separate Bexar Central Appraisal District, multiple branch offices, a county-linked ACT portal, and separate vehicle-registration rules. Match the account, property address, tax year, balance and official website before entering payment details.

Fast answer

Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector: what this office actually handles

The Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector collects property taxes, maintains payment status, offers payment-plan information, provides account-search tools, handles statements and receipts, and serves as a county office for many motor-vehicle registration and title services.

It does not set your appraised property value, approve a homestead exemption, correct ownership records, or hear an appraisal protest. Those jobs belong to Bexar Central Appraisal District, commonly called BCAD around San Antonio.

1
Need amount due or receipt?

Use the Bexar ACT tax account portal or call the Tax Office.

2
Need value or exemption fixed?

Use BCAD. The payment office cannot lower an appraisal.

3
Need vehicle registration?

Use the Tax Office motor-vehicle route and bring proof of insurance plus photo ID.

Wrong-office prevention

Bexar Tax Assessor-Collector or BCAD? Start in the right place

Use the Tax Assessor-Collector for:
  • property-tax balances and payoff amounts;
  • online, phone, mail and in-office payments;
  • statements, receipts, eStatements and payment history;
  • tax certificate request routing;
  • payment plans and delinquent account questions;
  • vehicle registration, titles and county motor-vehicle services.
Use BCAD for:
  • market value, appraised value and taxable value questions;
  • homestead, over-65, disabled and veteran exemptions;
  • ownership, mailing-address and property-record corrections;
  • property appraisal search and map records;
  • protests, appraisal notices, ARB hearings and PIN questions;
  • Owner/Agent ID and BCAD online services.
San Antonio rule: “How much do I owe or did my payment post?” goes to the Tax Office. “Why is my value high or where is my exemption?” goes to BCAD.
Search syntax

Search by address, owner, Account/GEO ID, CAD Property ID or fiduciary number

The Bexar portal is picky enough that a correct property can look missing when the search format is wrong. Use these entry rules before calling.

Owner name

Enter last name first, then first name. Remove commas, dashes, hyphens and periods. If the name is common, switch to address search.

Business name

Start with the first word of the business name and remove punctuation. Add more words only after too many results appear.

Property address

Use street number, space, then street name. Put N, S, E or W before the street name without a period. Do not enter St, Dr, Ave or Blvd.

Multiword street

Use the first word of the street and the first letter of the second word when the full street name does not work.

Account / GEO ID

Enter the 12-digit number with no spaces or dashes. This is usually the cleanest route from a property-tax statement.

CAD Property ID

Enter the 6-digit CAD PID with no spaces or dashes. This helps connect a BCAD appraisal record to the tax account.

Fiduciary number

Enter the 8-digit fiduciary number without spaces. This is used for fiduciary, trust, estate or related records.

Local search tip: “Bandera Road” is a Tax Office branch location, not your property account. Search the property’s actual address or Account/GEO ID when looking for a tax bill.
Troubleshooting

No Bexar County tax account found? Fix the search in this order

Owner search fails

Reverse to last-name-first, remove punctuation, and try the property address.

Address search fails

Remove the road suffix, use only the first street word, and shorten the second street word to its first letter.

Directional address fails

Put N, S, E or W before the street name without a period.

Recently purchased property

Try the prior owner name, property address and CAD Property ID. Ownership updates can appear differently across systems.

BCAD record appears but tax record does not

Copy the 6-digit CAD Property ID and search it in the Tax Office portal.

Nothing works

Call 210-335-2251 with the property address, owner name, CAD PID and any statement or closing document.

Useful call script: “I am trying to find the Bexar County property-tax account for [address/owner]. I searched by [method] and have CAD Property ID [number]. Can you confirm the 12-digit tax account and whether a current or delinquent balance exists?”
Payment route

Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector pay online and pay-by-phone

Bexar County says property taxes can be paid online by major credit card or eCheck. The county also lists a pay-by-phone number for property-tax payments.

Online eCheck

Listed as free. You need the 12-digit tax account, routing number and checking-account number from a check.

Online credit card

Listed with a 2.10% convenience charge through the processor. Review the final fee before submitting.

Pay by phone

Use the official payment line at 1-888-852-3572. Have the 12-digit account number ready.

Search first, then payNever begin with a payment screen before confirming the account and tax year.
Use an eligible bank accountDo not use money orders, cashier’s checks, brokerage accounts, mutual funds, credit-card accounts or line-of-credit accounts as eCheck.
Check email deliveryMake sure the confirmation email does not land in spam.
Allow posting timeElectronic payments can take several business days to process. Do not pay twice just because the portal has not updated yet.
Avoid duplicate payments: save the confirmation, transaction date, amount and account number. If the account does not update after the processing window, call the Tax Office instead of submitting another payment.
After payment

Receipts, payment history, eStatements, portfolios and overpayment checks

Print a statement

Open the account and print the correct tax year before escrow, closing or mailing questions.

Print a receipt

Confirm payer, amount, tax year and account before saving the receipt PDF.

Register eStatements

Complete the email verification step. Registration is not useful if verification is skipped.

Search overpayments

Use the county overpayment search instead of assuming a refund will automatically reach the current owner.

  • Save the 12-digit Account/GEO ID with every receipt.
  • Name downloaded files with property address, account number and tax year.
  • If a mortgage company pays, ask for the escrow disbursement record and verify county posting.
  • If a property recently sold, compare the closing statement, escrow record and tax account before paying again.

Deadline planning

Bexar County property-tax calendar and deadline risk

Bexar County’s tax calendar explains that property-tax timing depends on Texas Property Tax Code rules, the annual statement cycle, payment-plan status and whether a deadline falls on a weekend or legal holiday.

January 1

Assessment date for the tax roll. Appraisal and exemption issues belong with BCAD.

October

Tax statement mailing begins for the current year’s taxes.

November 30

First half-payment deadline if you use the half-payment option.

January 31

Normal deadline to pay the tax bill without standard penalty and interest when no special option applies.

February 1

Standard delinquency begins for unpaid accounts not protected by a valid payment plan or other rule.

June 30

Second half-payment deadline and a key deadline for some past-due arrangements before attorney-fee timing.

July 31

Fourth quarter-payment deadline for qualifying accounts using the quarter-payment plan.

Current-balance rule: do not calculate a payoff from an old statement, screenshot or review. Use the live Bexar account portal or call the Tax Office because penalty, interest, attorney fees, payment plans and prior-year balances can change the amount due.

Bexar County payment plans: one-time, half-payment, quarter-payment, 10-month and pre-payment

The official Bexar payment-plan PDF lists five planning routes. The right route depends on whether the taxes are current, whether a qualifying exemption appears on the certified appraisal roll, and whether a mortgage escrow company is involved.

Bexar County payment-plan options from the official PDF
PlanWho it helpsScheduleWatch for
One-time paymentAll taxpayers, business owners and business personal property accounts.Final due date is January 31.Penalty and interest begin February 1 unless a valid plan applies.
Half-payment planAll taxpayers and business owners for real estate and business personal property.First half by November 30; second half by June 30.Use the exact amount shown on the original tax bill.
Quarter-payment planQualifying residence homestead owners with homestead plus over-65, disabled person or disabled veteran exemption.January 31, March 31, May 31 and July 31.A late quarter can trigger penalty and monthly interest.
10-month payment planQualifying residential property owners with homestead plus over-65, disabled person or disabled veteran exemption.Monthly from October through July.Confirm exemption status with BCAD before relying on this plan.
Pre-payment planCurrent taxpayers, homeowners and business owners without mortgage escrow.Monthly installments through September 15; remaining statement mailed in October.Property taxes must be current.
Eligibility check: if a plan depends on an exemption, verify the exemption with BCAD first. The Tax Office cannot treat the account as over-65, disabled or veteran-exempt if the certified appraisal roll does not show it.
Late-account help

Penalty, interest, attorney-fee and collection risk

For unpaid property taxes, the original bill is not always the current payoff. Penalty, interest, attorney-fee timing, prior-year balances and collection status can change the amount due.

Failure to receive a bill

Bexar County explains that not receiving a tax notice does not remove the tax, due date, tax lien, penalty, interest or collection procedure.

Small account hold

The county notes that accounts at or below $15 may be withheld until the aggregate amount is greater than $15.

Attorney-fee timing

The official calendar includes attorney-fee timing for business property and past-due arrangements. Use the live account before paying late.

Late-account call script: “I need the current payoff for Bexar County account [12-digit number]. Please confirm whether there are prior-year balances, attorney fees, a payment plan, a mortgage escrow payment, or any delinquent collection status before I pay.”

Motor vehicle services

Bexar County vehicle registration and title help

Many San Antonio residents find the Tax Assessor-Collector while looking for property taxes, then learn that the same office also handles many county motor-vehicle routes. Vehicle transactions have different documents and timing than property-tax payments.

Bring proof of insurance

Registrations and title transfers require proof of current insurance that meets Texas liability limits.

Bring photo ID

Use a U.S. government or state-issued photo ID for registration and renewal transactions.

Use notice, plate or VIN

Have the renewal notice, Texas plate number or VIN ready before starting.

2025 Texas change: Bexar County says non-commercial vehicle safety inspections are no longer required as of January 1, 2025, but the state’s $7.50 Inspection Replacement Fee continues in annual registration cost.
Online TxDMV renewal

May be available 90 days before expiration or up to 12 months after expiration if no citation was received. Have plate, last four VIN digits, insurance and payment ready.

Expired registration

Visit a Bexar Tax Office or listed auto title and registration location with insurance and photo ID.

H-E-B renewal

Available only to Bexar County residents at participating business centers when registration is not more than 30 days expired. Call the store first.

Mail / drop-off

Send renewal form, payment and insurance proof. Bexar County says to allow up to 15 days for processing by mail or drop box.

Timed-out online session

If TxDMV shows the session “In Process,” Bexar County says you may need to wait 48 hours before trying again.

Bexar County tax certificate request: fee, account number and processing time

A tax certificate is used when someone needs an official account-status document, often for title, plat, city or closing-related work. It is different from a regular online receipt.

Required account detail

Email route

The form says to email the completed request to assessingclerk@bexar.org with a subject line that includes “Tax Certificate Request” and the account number.

Fee and payment

The form says a representative will contact you after the account is billed the $10 fee, then you can pay through the tax site.

Mail route

Mailing instructions route the request to the Tax Assessor-Collector, c/o Assessing Section, P.O. Box 839950, San Antonio, TX 78283-3950.

Processing time

The form says to allow up to 10 business days to process the request.

Delivery choice

Tax certificates may be mailed or emailed depending on delivery preference and use case.

Certificate warning: the official form states that tax certificates use the most current information available and all accounts are subject to change under Texas Property Tax Code references shown on the form.
Reviews intent

Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector reviews: how to use them safely

Reviews can help you understand parking, line patterns, customer-service experiences and branch convenience. They should not be used as the final source for hours, payment fees, legal deadlines, mailing address, vehicle requirements or account balances.

Good use of reviews

Compare which branch may be easier to reach from Downtown, Stone Oak, Leon Valley, Converse, Alamo Heights, Helotes or the Southside.

Bad use of reviews

Do not rely on a review for Wednesday hours, dealer-window timing, payment-plan eligibility, mail address or card fee.

Best visit plan

Search the account first, screenshot the question, bring ID/proof, then verify office hours on the official page before driving.

Local practical tip: if your issue is more complicated than a basic payment, call 210-335-2251 first. Some problems belong to BCAD, TxDMV, a mortgage company, a title company, or a closing/escrow file instead of the counter.
