Shelton, Connecticut · Tax bill, DMV and property-record guide

Search the Bill, Pay the Right Installment or Fix the Record

Use this guide to search Shelton real-estate, business-personal-property, motor-vehicle, supplemental and sewer bills, compare payment fees, confirm office hours or handle a bill that appears wrong.

The Tax Collector manages payment and delinquency. The Assessor manages values, property records, exemptions and many vehicle adjustments. Starting with the right office can prevent interest, duplicate payment and DMV delays.

Current deadline status — August 4, 2026: The official interest-free deadline for the July 2026 real-estate, business-personal-property, motor-vehicle and sewer-use bills was August 3, 2026. An unpaid July bill is now late. Search the live balance or call before paying because statutory interest runs from the original July 1 due date.

Tax Lien Warning

⛔ Texas Attorney Fee Warning: After July 1, delinquent property taxes are referred to a collection attorney. An additional 15–20% attorney fee is added on top of your penalty and interest. On a $5,000 tax bill, this adds $750–$1,000 instantly. Pay before July 1 to avoid this.

The June mailing contains both installments. Keep Part B even after paying Part A.

Interest, liens and collections

What happens when a Shelton tax bill is late?

Interest

1.5% per month, or 18% annually, from the original due date.

Minimum

$2 minimum interest charge.

No discretionary waiver

The Tax Collector states that Connecticut law does not permit the office to waive statutory interest.

How monthly interest works: The city’s FAQ example says a July 1 bill paid August 10 receives two months of interest, or 3%, because interest runs from the original due date. Use the live portal or office for the exact payoff.
No bill was receivedThe tax and interest still apply. Search online or call for a copy rather than waiting.
“Back taxes also due” appearsOlder balances exist in addition to the new bill. Request a complete payoff.
Payment went to another billConnecticut law requires the office to apply a payment to the oldest outstanding tax first.
Portal says to call another numberThe account may have been forwarded to TaxServ or a State Marshal. Pay only through the confirmed authorized route.
Real-estate or sewer balance remainsThe annual city date guide says lien notices may be mailed and liens filed with the City Clerk during the fiscal-year process.
Payment proof is missingGather the cancelled check, bank transaction, online confirmation, amount and date before calling.
Do not send a partial guessed amount to stop interest. Ask for the exact current balance when older taxes, collection costs or a lien may be involved.

Moved out of ConnecticutContact the Assessor promptly with proof so the office can review prorating or removal.
Sold, traded, stolen or totaled vehicleContact the Assessor with supporting records. The payment due date does not pause while the adjustment is reviewed.
Transferred a plate to a new vehicleThe old-vehicle bill remains due. The later supplemental bill is prorated and credits overlapping months; the credit follows the plate.
Supplemental vehicle billGenerally applies to registrations or plate transfers after October 1 and through the following August 31; payment is due in January.
Several vehicle bills appearAll delinquent tax bills connected with the registering taxpayer name must be paid for release.
Assessor database and revaluation records

How to search Shelton property and assessment records

The official Shelton MapXpress tool is a GIS and real-property database, not the tax-payment system. The search page supports owner name, house number/street and map-lot searches.

Search by owner nameStart with the surname or legal owner name. Verify the site address because unrelated owners can share a name.
Search by house number and streetSelect the street and enter the number. Check unit, parcel and map context when multiple records appear.
Use map-lot informationEnter the map and lot when it is printed on an assessment record, deed or prior property card.
Review the property cardCheck owner, parcel, assessment, building characteristics, sales and mapped location.
Report a factual error to the AssessorPrepare the property address, parcel or map-lot, disputed field and supporting documentation.
Use MyTaxBill for collection statusThe GIS assessment is not a current balance, payoff, receipt or proof that a tax payment posted.
Database update notes

The public GIS page states that ownership and sales are updated nightly and identifies the GIS parcel data as provided in January 2026.

2025 citywide revaluation

The 2025 Grand List reflects a revaluation year. A higher assessment does not necessarily mean the mill rate stayed the same; the current mill rate fell to 15.51.

Appeal timing: The Assessor publishes separate 2026 assessment-appeal information. By August 4, the ordinary 2026 revaluation-appeal window may already be closed. Contact the Assessor or Board of Assessment Appeals for the current remaining remedy rather than assuming a payment dispute changes the assessment.

Sewer-use payment

Search a Shelton sewer bill without paying a tax account by mistake

Open the Shelton MyTaxBill portalThe same site handles taxes and sewer accounts.
Select Sewer/Water/MiscThe portal defaults to Tax Bills. Switch tabs before entering the sewer information.
Use the bill or list numberEnter the identifier from the sewer-use notice and open the matching account.
Verify bill type 06Confirm that the result is Sewer Usage rather than real estate, personal property or motor vehicle.
Review the current balance and feeThe July 2026 sewer-use bill’s interest-free deadline was August 3, 2026. Use the live amount if unpaid.
Rate-page caution: The currently indexed city sewer-rate page describes the July 2025–June 2026 period, which has ended. Use the actual 2026 bill or current WPCA notice rather than applying the expired rate table to a new account.
Mortgage, closing and mailing records

Escrow bills, paid-off mortgages, property sales and address changes

Mortgage company should payCall the lender immediately. The lender may already have the data or may need the bill forwarded.
Mortgage was just paid offThe bank’s notice to the city is not immediate. Search online or call so the next installment is not missed.

What Shelton businesses should know about declarations and tax bills

The Assessor—not the Tax Collector—receives the annual declaration of taxable business personal property. The Tax Collector later collects the bill created from the Grand List.

2025 declaration cycle

The official Assessor page states that the October 1, 2025 declaration was due November 3, 2025. That deadline has passed.

Failure-to-file risk

The city states that late or missing filing can result in assessment from the best information available and a 25% assessment penalty.

Watch for the next annual declaration notice
Contact the Assessor even if no form arrives
Keep asset schedules and disposal records
Use MyTaxBill code 02 to check the billed account
Filing and paying are separate tasks. Filing the declaration does not pay an existing bill, and paying a bill does not correct a missing or inaccurate declaration.
