Cost before checkout

Online fees and payment-proof rules

E-check

$1.50 fee. The Trustee says an accepted E-check is considered paid at the date/time of acceptance and posts immediately.

Credit / debit card

2.6% convenience fee. The fee is non-refundable and is not retained by the Trustee.

Returned check

A returned-check fee is added; the tax becomes due again with applicable interest.

Large-payment math matters: a 2.6% card fee grows with the bill. Compare the exact checkout fee against the $1.50 E-check fee before authorizing a large tax payment.

Search strategy

Use the Assessor or GIS when you need parcel value, characteristics or boundaries. Use payit901 when you need the tax bill, balance, receipt or payment action.

Rate context

Do not confuse tax rate with the amount currently due

The Trustee’s public historical rate table currently runs through tax year 2025 and lists a $2.69 county rate per $100 of assessed value for both inside and outside Memphis. That rate followed Shelby County’s 2025 reappraisal.

2026 freshness rule: use the newest certified rate shown by the responsible county source for a 2026 calculation. Do not copy an older $3.39 rate from search snippets or assume the historical 2025 table is a payoff tool.
Assessor

Establishes property value and assessment.

County Commission + Trustee

The Commission sets the rate; the Trustee applies the rate to each $100 of assessed value and collects the bill.

Senior / disability help

Tax Relief, Tax Freeze and Quarterly Pay use separate rules

Tax Relief

State-funded help may pay all or part of qualifying local property taxes for seniors, disabled citizens and certain veterans/spouses.

Tax Freeze

For qualifying homeowners age 65+, the program can freeze the tax amount on the primary residence for future years, subject to program rules.

Quarterly Pay

Qualifying age-65+ fixed-income owner-occupants can use a special quarterly schedule instead of one annual payment.

Old application dates are still visible on official pages: the Trustee’s current Tax Relief/Freeze pages reference the 2025 tax-year cycle and an April 5, 2026 deadline, which has passed. Call 901-222-0204 before treating any old date, income limit or application as the next enrollment cycle.
Delinquency & tax sale

What changes after a Shelby County tax becomes delinquent

Interest begins March 1The Trustee adds 1.5% of base tax on March 1 and additional interest on the first day of each later month.
Older delinquency can add legal costBalances delinquent for one year or more may be subject to lawsuit charges and other legal fees.
Search the parcel again before payingThe tax search can display a tax-sale number and date for an affected parcel.
Ask Collections for the exact payoffCall 901-222-0250 when legal fees, lawsuit status or a tax sale may affect the amount.
Use a formal plan only if it fitsA written plan for a property scheduled for current tax sale must include all delinquent years and can run no longer than 24 months.
Next published tax sale: the Trustee’s schedule currently lists Sale 2301 for October 27, 2026, with publication dated August 26, 2026. Tax-sale properties are handled online through Zeus Auction, and parcels can be removed from the list when payment is made.
No over-the-counter tax lien certificates: the Trustee says Shelby County does not sell tax lien certificates over the counter. The county uses public tax-sale auctions for qualifying tax-defaulted property.
