Which Merced County tax deadline matters now?

2026 unsecured property billMost unsecured bills are mailed by July 31 and are normally due by 5:00 p.m. on August 31. If mailed later, the bill may have an extended month-end deadline. Use the date printed on the bill.
Unpaid 2025–26 secured or supplemental taxAmounts still unpaid at 12:01 a.m. on July 1, 2026 became tax-defaulted. Request a current redemption amount before paying.
2026–27 annual secured billThe standard first installment is due November 1, 2026 and normally becomes delinquent after December 10, 2026. Verify the new bill when issued.
Supplemental bill received nowIts delinquency dates depend on the mailing month. Do not apply the annual secured calendar automatically.
Unsecured means movable property. Examples include business personal property/fixtures, boats and airplanes. Liability generally remains with the January 1 owner even if the property was sold later.

Pay online login intent

Do you need an account or login to pay?

Secured due dates, delinquent dates and current status

November 1 — first installment dueThe bill is payable before this date, but this is the standard statutory due date.
December 10 — standard first-installment delinquency dateA 10% penalty applies after the last timely-payment deadline, subject to weekend/holiday rules.
February 1 — second installment dueThe second installment may be paid earlier; you do not need to wait until February.
April 10 — standard second-installment delinquency dateA 10% penalty plus the applicable current fixed cost/fees may apply.
July 1 — unpaid secured/supplemental taxes become tax-defaultedA redemption penalty of 1.5% per month and redemption-related fees can then apply.
Weekend or holiday rule: The secured-tax FAQ says the delinquency deadline moves to 5:00 p.m. on the next business day when the stated date falls on a weekend or legal holiday.
August 2026 context: The April 10, 2026 second-installment deadline has passed. An unpaid 2025–26 secured account is no longer a normal current installment; obtain the current redemption amount.
Time-sensitive August intent

Merced County unsecured taxes due around August 31

Unsecured taxes apply to movable property rather than land. The county lists business personal property/fixtures, boats and airplanes as common examples.

Normal mailing and deadline

Most unsecured bills are mailed by July 31 and must normally be paid by 5:00 p.m. on August 31. If mailed after July 31, the deadline is generally the end of the following month.

Liability after sale

The person who owned the property on January 1 remains liable even when the movable property is sold or disposed of later.

Late unsecured taxes can escalate. The county FAQ says a 10% penalty is added after the deadline; after two additional months, 1.5% monthly penalties can begin, a Certificate of Tax Lien may be recorded and collection can include seizure of personal property or bank accounts.
Match the assessee named on the bill
Verify the January 1 ownership/liability date
Use the bill-specific delinquent date
Keep sale/disposal records for Assessor questions
New owner and construction help

Supplemental tax bills use their own mailing-based deadlines

A supplemental bill is an additional secured bill after a change in ownership or new construction. It taxes the difference between the old and new value for the applicable portion of the fiscal year.

How the supplemental delinquent dates are determined
Bill mailedFirst installmentSecond installmentWhat to verify
July–OctoberStandard December 10 delinquent dateStandard April 10 delinquent dateExact fiscal year and both bills
November–JuneLast day of the month after mailingFour months after the first delinquent dateDates printed on the bill
Why two supplemental bills can arrive: A purchase or new construction can affect portions of two fiscal years, creating more than one supplemental bill.
Escrow does not guarantee payment. Supplemental bills are commonly sent to the homeowner, and a mortgage servicer may not receive or automatically pay them.

Redemption and payment plans

What happens after taxes become tax-defaulted

Current secured or supplemental tax unpaid at 12:01 a.m. on July 1 becomes tax-defaulted. The county says a 1.5% monthly redemption penalty attaches and a $15 redemption fee applies at redemption.

Starting a redemption installment plan
  • Pay at least 20% of the total redemption amount.
  • Keep current-year taxes paid as required.
  • Keep supplemental second installments from becoming delinquent at fiscal year-end.
  • Official FAQ lists a $100 plan setup fee.
Keeping the plan active
  • Pay at least 20% of the original redemption amount each year.
  • Pay accrued 1.5% monthly interest.
  • Pay current taxes by the required April deadline.
  • A default can prevent a new plan when power-to-sell status is reached.
Tax-sale risk: Property delinquent for five or more years may be offered for sale. California counties do not sell “tax lien certificates”; Merced County auctions tax-defaulted property through its authorized platform.
Paperless bills and reminders

E-Tax billing, reminder emails and the correct support inbox

Paperless service benefits

  • Confirm the account email is correct.
  • Confirm the registration link within 24 hours.
  • Verify the intended APN was added.
Limited-purpose email: The e-Tax billing service identifies mercedebills@countyofmerced.com for e-bill parcel-enrollment errors, such as an APN added to the wrong account. Use the official contact form or Tax Collector phone for general tax questions.
