Denton County, Texas · Property tax, offices and vehicle-service guide
Search, Pay or Visit the Right Denton County Tax Office
Use the official property-tax portal, compare all six office locations, plan a Lewisville or Frisco visit, check live wait times, book a vehicle appointment and avoid sending appraisal questions to the payment office.
This guide explains the exact property-search formats, current payment fees, January deadline rules, partial-payment options, 2026 vehicle-ID changes and the difference between the Tax Office, Denton CAD and County Clerk records.
Choose the department before you act. Denton County Tax Office collects property tax and handles vehicle title/registration. Denton Central Appraisal District sets value, ownership and exemptions. The County Clerk maintains recorded deeds and other real-property instruments. Paying the Tax Office does not correct the appraisal or deed record.

Tax Lien Warning
⛔ Texas Attorney Fee Warning: After July 1, delinquent property taxes are referred to a collection attorney. An additional 15–20% attorney fee is added on top of your penalty and interest. On a $5,000 tax bill, this adds $750–$1,000 instantly. Pay before July 1 to avoid this.

How to search a Denton County property-tax account
Open the county tax portalUse taxweb.dentoncounty.gov rather than a real-estate listing, appraisal copy site or another county’s payment page.
Choose one search fieldStart with the property-tax account number when available. Otherwise use owner name, owner mailing address or property location.
Format the owner name correctlyEnter the last name, a space and the first name or initial, such as DOE JOHN or DOE J.
Format an address search correctlyFor owner address or property location, enter the street number and street name. For property location, omit direction and street type such as North, Avenue, Lane or Drive.
Set filters intentionallyChoose the account type, whether inactive accounts should be included, and whether to display paid, unpaid or both statuses.
Open the likely accountCompare owner, property location, account number, tax year, taxing units and balance. Search a prior owner when a recent purchase has not yet updated.
Select only the account you intend to payThe payment cart requires an account with a due balance. Do not add a similarly named property or an unwanted delinquent year.

Internet receipt warning: The county marks an online property-tax account paid pending receipt of funds. Keep money available and monitor the account until the transaction is fully funded and posted.
January 31 deadline, postmark rule, partial payments and installments
October–December: statements are mailedSearch the portal when a bill is expected but does not arrive, or enroll for electronic statement delivery using the county-listed forms.
Taxes are due upon receiptDo not wait until the last day when escrow, address, ownership or bank information is uncertain.
January 31: normal timely-payment deadlineMailed payments need a timely U.S. Postal Service postmark. The county FAQ treats online payments completed by 11:59 p.m. Central Time as timely.
After January 31: penalty and interest beginRequest a current amount rather than calculating from an old statement.
Partial payments
Denton County accepts partial payments. Write the property account number and “Partial payment” in the check remarks. Any balance remaining after January 31 begins accruing penalty and interest.
Over-65/disabled installments
Qualified homestead taxpayers may request quarterly payments in writing and pay at least one-fourth by January 31, March 31, May 31 and July 31. A missed installment triggers penalty and interest.
No-bill rule: Failure to receive a statement does not cancel the tax, due date, lien, penalty, interest or collection process. Search the official account before the deadline.
Denton County’s escrow tool checks whether a mortgage company or fiduciary requested the current tax statement. The taxpayer still remains responsible for confirming that the levy is paid.
Use the property-tax account numberLocate the correct property in the escrow search and confirm the mortgage company or fiduciary shown.
Read the statement watermarkIf a fiduciary requested the statement, the taxpayer’s original may say “DUPLICATE SENT TO MORTGAGE CO.”
Ask the lender for transaction proofRequest the tax account, payment date, amount, method and confirmation.
Check the Tax Office recordDo not assume a lender request means payment has been sent or posted.
Avoid double paymentContact the Tax Office when lender proof exists but the county record is still unpaid.
Mortgage paid off? The county says the prior mortgage company will stop requesting statements. You do not need to notify the Tax Office merely because escrow ended, but you should verify the owner mailing address maintained for tax statements.

Frisco spans Denton and Collin counties. Use Denton County only when the property account or vehicle-owner residence belongs in Denton County. A Frisco mailing address does not by itself prove which county tax office owns the transaction.

Book a vehicle-registration appointment or choose the shortest live queue
Denton County provides one appointment system and live service-specific wait times for all six offices. The queue dashboard separates property tax, registration renewal and title transfers.
Choose the transaction firstRoutine registration renewal, title transfer, new resident, property tax and appraisal questions require different preparation.
Compare all six locationsThe nearest office is not always the fastest. Review the current queue for the service you actually need.
Book when the transaction is document-heavyAn appointment is especially useful for title, initial registration and new-resident work.
Keep the 4:00 p.m. cutoffAn appointment does not extend processing for title transfers or new-resident transactions beyond the county’s daily cutoff.
Recheck before leavingWait times change throughout the day and do not guarantee the transaction can be completed with missing documents.
Queue strategy: Check three columns—not one. An office can have a short property-tax line and a long title-transfer line at the same time.
Different effective dates: The county-linked TxDMV bulletin says new ID requirements for initial registration took effect March 5, 2026. The new registration-renewal ID requirements do not take effect until January 1, 2027.
Initial registration in 2026
The transaction chart determines whether List A or List B applies. Standard initial registration generally uses the stricter List A standard.
Title only or certain other transactions
The bulletin assigns List B to title-only and several other transaction types. Only List B IDs may be expired up to 12 months under the bulletin.
Examples from the bulletin
Valid unexpired REAL ID-compliant state driver license or ID
Qualifying non-REAL-ID state ID, sometimes with birth/citizenship proof
Valid unexpired U.S. passport
Valid foreign passport with an accepted immigration-status document
Texas License to Carry where the applicable list permits it
Agent for a business, trust or leasing company brings the agent’s own List B photo ID
Do not self-select the wrong list. The required ID depends on whether the transaction is title, initial registration, title only, permit, commercial registration or another category. Review the chart or call before the appointment.
Prepare the property ID, owner ID, property address and the specific value, exemption, ownership or record issue.
Paying does not fix the appraisal. A Tax Office payment may stop additional collection consequences, but it does not automatically change value, exemptions, owner name, mailing address or property characteristics.
Closing or title work: A public tax-account result is not a formal tax certificate and a CAD record is not a title opinion. Denton County lists a formal tax certificate for $10 with specific payment requirements; title/legal questions may require a title company or attorney.
Use the Truth in Taxation database for proposed taxes—not the current payoff
Denton County says the local proposed-property-tax database is updated during August and September as taxing units propose and adopt rates. This is useful for comparing estimated taxes and contacting taxing units.

Role reminder: The Tax Assessor-Collector does not determine appraised values or adopt tax rates. Denton CAD appraises property; elected taxing units adopt rates.

Attorney-referral timing differs by account type. The county FAQ says personal-property and mobile-home accounts unpaid after March 31 may receive an additional 15%–20% collection penalty. Real-property accounts unpaid after June 30 may be referred and receive the additional collection penalty.

Confirm partial-payment effectA partial payment reduces principal but does not stop penalty and interest on the remaining balance.
