Clay County property tax calendar

Clay County follows Florida’s statutory property-tax calendar. The Florida Department of Revenue states that tax bills are generally sent in November, taxes are payable beginning November 1 and the normal payment deadline is March 31. Unpaid taxes generally become delinquent April 1, subject to statutory rules for late-mailed notices.

Period What normally happens Payment status
November Annual property-tax bills are generally issued; early payment receives the highest standard discount. 4% discount
December Early payment remains eligible for a statutory discount. 3% discount
January Property taxes can still be paid with an early-payment discount. 2% discount
February Last regular month with a standard early-payment discount. 1% discount
March Taxes remain payable through the normal deadline. No discount
April 1 Unpaid taxes generally become delinquent under Florida law. Delinquent

One important date to remember

March 31 is the normal deadline for the full property-tax payment. Waiting until April can move the account into delinquent status, so check your current bill instead of assuming a previous year’s timing or balance is still applicable.

Florida law also contains special rules for tax notices mailed late. If a notice is issued after the normal timetable, the applicable delinquency date can be affected by those statutory rules. Your current tax notice and the Tax Collector’s instructions should control for a specific account.

Clay County property tax discounts

Florida provides a standard early-payment discount schedule for property taxes. The Department of Revenue currently lists 4% in November, 3% in December, 2% in January and 1% in February. March has no discount.

November

4% discount when the payment qualifies under Florida’s payment rules.

December

3% discount for qualifying early payment.

January

2% discount for qualifying early payment.

February

1% discount for qualifying early payment.

March has no regular discount

March is the final month before the normal April 1 delinquency date, but Florida’s standard schedule provides zero discount in March. The full amount is generally due by March 31.

What happens if Clay County property taxes are delinquent?

Under Florida’s normal property-tax calendar, unpaid taxes become delinquent April 1. Delinquent real and tangible personal property taxes can accrue interest, and real-property delinquent taxes can proceed toward tax-certificate sale under Florida law.

Real property

Florida requires tax collectors to advertise and sell tax certificates on qualifying real property with delinquent taxes under the statutory timetable.

Tangible personal property

Delinquent tangible personal property taxes are subject to separate collection and enforcement procedures. Do not assume a real-estate tax rule applies identically.

Do not rely on an old balance

Once taxes become delinquent, interest, penalties, advertising and other statutory costs can affect the amount required to bring the account current. Get the current payoff amount from the Tax Collector before sending payment.

Florida’s Department of Revenue states that tax certificates on delinquent real property are generally sold by June 1, subject to the statutory rules and any applicable extension caused by a late tax notice.
