How to look up and pay an Old Saybrook tax bill
The Town provides an online tax lookup and payment route for real estate, personal property and motor vehicle accounts. The Tax Collector advises users searching by owner name to enter the last name followed by a space and the first initial.
Online payment fees in Old Saybrook
Old Saybrook states that its electronic-processing partner charges convenience fees for online transactions. The fee is separate from the tax itself, so compare the payment methods before confirming a large bill.
| Method | Published fee | Useful detail |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic check | $0.95 | Available through the Town website. |
| Debit card | $3.95 flat fee | The Town identifies Visa and MasterCard debit payments. |
| Credit card | 2.5% of the payment, $2 minimum | A $2,000 payment would produce a $50 processing fee at 2.5%. |
Old Saybrook property tax due dates
Real estate and personal property tax bills over $100 are paid in two installments. The Town says the first installment is due July 1 and the second is due January 1. Bills are mailed once a year, in the middle of June, so taxpayers should retain the January portion rather than expect a second bill in winter.
| Tax | Due | Standard last day without penalty |
|---|---|---|
| Real estate — first installment | July 1 | August 1 |
| Real estate — second installment | January 1 | February 1 |
| Personal property over $100 | July 1 and January 1 | August 1 and February 1 |
| Regular motor vehicle tax | July 1 | August 1 |
| Motor vehicle supplemental tax | January 1 | Check the current Town notice |

Paying in person
The Tax Collector is on the first floor of Town Hall. The Town lists checks, money orders and cash as accepted in-person methods and recommends bringing cash close to the exact amount.
Credit and debit card availability and associated processor fees can change, so verify the current payment options before making a special trip if you intend to use a card.
Where to mail an Old Saybrook tax payment
During the regular July and January collection periods, the Town instructs taxpayers to use the payment envelope supplied with the bill. Outside those collection periods, the Tax Department publishes the following mailing address:
Old Saybrook, CT 06475
Attn: Tax Department
What happens if an Old Saybrook tax bill is late?
The Town states that delinquent interest accrues from the original due date at 1.5% per month, or 18% annually, with a $2 minimum interest charge. A partial month counts for purposes of the monthly interest calculation.
The Tax Collector’s published FAQ also explains that the office does not have authority to waive statutory interest simply because a bill was not received. If a bill is missing, check the online account or contact the office rather than waiting for another mailing.
Delinquent personal property accounts
The Town states that TaxServ Capital Services handles collection of delinquent personal property taxes under contract. If you receive a TaxServ notice, use the contact instructions on the notice and verify the account before sending payment.
Motor vehicle tax bills and Connecticut DMV holds
Regular Old Saybrook motor vehicle taxes are due in full July 1. Supplemental motor vehicle bills for qualifying later registrations are generally due January 1 and are mailed in December.
Delinquent motor vehicle taxes can affect Connecticut DMV compliance. The Town says an online debit, credit-card or e-check transaction can take three to five business days before the Town receives the funds, and the DMV delinquency hold is not released until those funds are received.
If you sold, junked or moved the vehicle
The Tax Collector collects the tax, but the Assessor handles many vehicle-value and ownership adjustments. If you no longer own the vehicle or registered it outside Connecticut, contact the Assessor promptly and ask what proof is required.

Common Old Saybrook tax-payment problems
| Problem | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You never received the bill | The tax may still be legally due. | Look up the account online or call the Tax Collector rather than waiting for another bill. |
| Online payment will not process | A browser, security protocol or payment issue may be involved. | Do not repeatedly submit payment. Check whether a transaction posted and contact the Tax Department if needed. |
| Wrong property value | This is an assessment issue, not a collection calculation. | Contact the Assessor and ask about the applicable correction or appeal process. |
| DMV hold remains after online payment | The Town may not yet have received the processor’s funds. | Allow for the Town’s stated processing delay and contact the Tax Collector if timing is critical. |
| Current payment applied to an older bill | The Town applies payments to the oldest outstanding liability first. | Review the account history and contact the Tax Collector if you need help reconciling balances. |
