Tax Lien Warning

⛔ Texas Attorney Fee Warning: After July 1, delinquent property taxes are referred to a collection attorney. An additional 15–20% attorney fee is added on top of your penalty and interest. On a $5,000 tax bill, this adds $750–$1,000 instantly. Pay before July 1 to avoid this.

Important 2026 update

The office name changed, but tax services continue

Effective July 1, 2026, Mecklenburg County combined the County Assessor and Tax Collector operations under the Office of Tax Administration. Searchers still commonly use โ€œMecklenburg County Tax Collector,โ€ and the collection function still handles bills, payments and delinquency.

Collection side

Tax-bill search, payment posting, mailing, interest, gross-receipts taxes, delinquent balances and enforcement questions.

Assessment side

Property value, ownership and address records, classification, personal-property listing, exemptions, relief applications and appeals.

Fast routing rule: If the amount is wrong because the value or record is wrong, use assessment help. If the record is right but the payment or balance is wrong, use collection help.

Online and phone payment

Pay online without selecting the wrong bill or fee

Start from the official county pay page Select real estate, individual/business personal property, registered motor vehicle, business tax or the applicable licence route.
Search and verify the exact bill Match tax year, bill number, property or business and the amount due.
Choose eCheck or card eCheck is listed without a service fee. Card payments carry a third-party convenience fee.
Review the final total The official checkout screen controls the fee and payment total; do not rely on an old screenshot.
Submit once Wait for a success message. Repeated clicks can create duplicate authorizations.
Save proof and verify posting Keep the confirmation, payment date, amount, bill number and bank/card record until the account updates.
Current published electronic-payment costs
Method Published fee Practical use
eCheck No county-listed service fee Lowest-cost official electronic option when bank details are available.
Visa debit / Mastercard debit $3.95 Compare against the percentage card fee before paying.
Other credit/debit cards 2.35%, minimum $1.95 Convenient, but the fee grows with a large bill.
Phone payment Method-dependent vendor fee 24/7 payment at 1-800-994-1026; English/Spanish service has been published.
Fee control: Convenience fees go to the payment vendor, not Mecklenburg County. Confirm the displayed fee before authorizing the transaction.

Check and money-order checklist

Make a property-tax check payable to Mecklenburg County Tax Collector
Use the current date and sign the check
Write numeric and written amounts that agree
Include the current bill number or business account number
Use a check with preprinted drawer, bank and MICR information
Do not use a starter, counter, altered or photocopied check
Do not combine addresses. A property-tax check, a business gross-receipts return and a state NCDOR payment do not use the same lockbox.

Pay at the public counter

Visit the Valerie C. Woodard Center at 3205 Freedom Drive, Suite 3000, Charlotte, NC 28208. Published hours are Mondayโ€“Friday, 8 a.m.โ€“5 p.m. The county lists cash, money order, check, credit card and eligible debit card. Use Entrance E unless a current county notice directs otherwise.

High-risk mistake

Why ordinary bank bill pay can delay or reject a tax payment

The county does not recommend online banking bill pay for property taxes. The full 24-digit bill number must be entered in the bankโ€™s account-number field. A missing, shortened or old bill number can cause rejection and return.
Bank bill-pay timing and safeguards
Payment type County guidance Action
Property-tax bank bill pay May take up to four business days after authorization. Use the current full 24-digit bill number and schedule well before the deadline.
Business-tax bank bill pay Often becomes a paper check and may take up to six business days. Use the account number and allow mailing/processing time.
Rejected bank payment A missing or incorrect bill number may cause return. Do not assume the date you clicked โ€œsendโ€ protects against interest.
Safer near a deadline: Use the official eCheck/card portal, phone payment or in-person counter and retain a timestamped confirmation.

Proof to save by payment method

Electronic payment

Confirmation number, bill number, date/time, amount and bank/card transaction.

Current 2026 cycle

Mecklenburg County property-tax dates and interest

Mecklenburg County mailed approximately 449,000 real-property, individual-personal-property and business-personal-property bills on July 28, 2026.

July 28, 2026 โ€” bills mailed Search online if the paper bill does not arrive or if ownership changed.
September 1, 2026 โ€” bills due The statutory due date is earlier than the no-interest cutoff.
January 5, 2027 โ€” pay by this date to avoid interest Do not wait until the final day when using mail or bank bill pay.
After the no-interest deadline The county lists 2% initially and 0.75% for each additional month until paid in full.
Missing bill is not a defence. Failure to receive a bill does not invalidate the tax or resulting interest. Use the online lookup and contact the office when expected billing is absent.
Delinquency sequence: The county generally mails delinquent notices in February and publishes delinquent names in March or April. Collection action does not have to wait for publication.
Homeowners and buyers

Mortgage escrow, recently purchased property and duplicate-payment checks

Your mortgage servicer normally pays Compare the county bill status with the servicerโ€™s scheduled disbursement. Do not assume a notification copy means the account is unpaid.
The bill still shows unpaid near January Contact the servicer and county with the parcel and 24-digit bill number before paying a second time.
You bought the property during 2026 Search the parcel even if the bill was addressed to the January 1 owner. Review the closing statement for tax proration.
You sold the property Do not assume the county system instantly reflects closing adjustments. Use the recorded ownership and bill status.
Both owner and lender paid Gather both confirmations and call before requesting a refund or reversing a payment.
Escrow shortage or payment difficulty Contact the mortgage company and county early rather than waiting until the delinquent date.
Useful escrow call script โ€œI am calling about parcel [number] and 2026 bill [24-digit number]. My mortgage servicer is [name]. Can you confirm whether a payment file or payment has posted and whether I should avoid making a duplicate payment?โ€

Bill calculation

What the 49.27-cent county tax rate doesโ€”and does not show

The current county rate is 49.27 cents per $100 of assessed value. Divide assessed value by 100 and multiply by 0.4927 to estimate the county portion.

$200,000 value

$200,000 รท 100 ร— 0.4927 = $985.40 county tax.

Not the full bill

A municipal rate for Charlotte or a county town may also appear.

Other charges

County/municipal solid-waste fees or special assessments may apply.

Do not calculate a payoff from the rate. The live bill controls because it reflects jurisdiction, fees, adjustments, payments and interest.
2026 AV-9 official form

Property-tax relief for elderly, disabled and veteran homeowners

The normal 2026 filing deadline was June 1, 2026. Submit the application to the Mecklenburg County assessment officeโ€”not to NCDOR. If the deadline was missed, call immediately; the state form describes a limited good-cause late-application route, but approval is not automatic.
Three AV-9 programs
Program Main 2026 benefit Key eligibility/impact
Elderly or Disabled Exclusion Greater of $25,000 or 50% of the appraised permanent-residence value excluded. Age 65+ or totally/permanently disabled; 2026 income limit $38,800.
Disabled Veteran Exclusion Up to the first $45,000 of permanent-residence value excluded. Qualifying total/permanent service-connected disability or surviving-spouse route; no age or income limit.
Circuit Breaker Deferral Tax limited to 4% of income up to $38,800, or 5% from $38,800 to $58,200. Age/disability, ownership and residence tests; deferred taxes remain a lien.
Only one program benefit

Each owner may receive benefit from only one of the three programs, even when more than one appears possible.

Circuit Breaker must be renewed

A new application is required every year. On a disqualifying event, the last three deferred years may become due with interest.

Disability documentation

AV-9A may be required for the elderly/disabled or circuit-breaker route.

Veteran certification

NCDVA-9 must first be completed through an eligible Veterans Service Officer and then filed with the county assessor.

Vehicle tax routing

Registered motor vehicles, Tag & Tax Together and gap bills

Normal registration renewal

Most registered motor-vehicle property tax is collected through NCDMV with the registration renewal.

Mecklenburg gap bill

The county may bill previously untaxed months between registration and renewal dates.

Charlotte auto fee

Registered vehicles within the City of Charlotte are also assessed a $30 auto fee.

Read the issuer on the notice If the tax appears on the combined registration renewal, use NCDMV. If it is a county gap bill, use Mecklenburgโ€™s bill route.
Verify due date and vehicle Gap bills are due September 1 and generally payable without interest through the first week of the following January.
Route value disputes correctly Registered-motor-vehicle value, situs or taxability appeals generally go to assessment and have a short deadline tied to the due date.
Do not pay the same tax twice Compare the county bill with the DMV renewal before submitting a second payment.
Renewal rule: Vehicle property taxes included in the NCDMV renewal generally must be paid before registration can be renewed.
Business taxpayers

Separate business personal property from gross-receipts taxes

Common business-tax routes
Task Correct route Important detail
Pay a business personal-property bill Property Tax System / property-tax payment The Jan. 1 owner of record is responsible; mid-year asset-sale proration does not apply.

Room occupancy return Business Tax Collections Generally due on the 20th of each month.

Get a current payoff before collection action grows

Do not pay an amount copied from an old advertisement or letter without checking the live bill. Interest and collection status may have changed.

Possible Mecklenburg County collection remedies

Attachment or garnishment Funds or wages due to the taxpayer. Call for the exact balance and notice status.
Levy/seizure Personal property may be seized and sold. Do not ignore a levy or collection notice.
State refund/lottery offset NC income-tax refund or lottery winnings. Provide the offset notice when calling.
Foreclosure Real property may enter a legal foreclosure process. Seek current county/legal instructions immediately.
Publication can lag. A taxpayer list may still show a bill that was recently paid, appealed or affected by bankruptcy until the next update. The live bill and county confirmation control.

Verify a suspicious tax-demand letter

Do not call only the number printed on the unexpected letter
Search the official bill independently
Call 311 or 704-336-7600
Never pay by gift card, cryptocurrency or unverified transfer
Troubleshooting

Common bill and payment problemsโ€”what to do next

No bill found Try bill number, parcel, owner/business name and street name. Confirm that the property is in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
Bill mailed to the former owner Search by parcel and contact assessment/GIS for ownership or mailing-record corrections.
Amount looks too high Separate a value issue from added municipal rates, waste fees, interest or prior balances.
Online payment failed Capture the error, check whether the bank/card shows a pending authorization and call before retrying.
Payment not posted Allow the published processing period, then provide the confirmation/check number, amount, date and bill number.
Wrong bill paid Contact collection immediately with both the paid bill and intended bill; do not make another payment blindly.
Duplicate payment Confirm both transactions actually settled before seeking correction or refund.
Address changed Updating a payment profile may not update the official assessment mailing record; use the county address-change route.
