Use this page to reach the official payment center, check the main office hours, understand payment fees and due dates, find your parcel information, or work out where an overdue bill must be paid.

Town versus Village matters: The Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes handles Town General and School tax collections. If you are trying to pay a separate tax bill from an incorporated village, including the Incorporated Village of Hempstead, use that village’s tax office instead. Correct office

New York terminology can make this search confusing. The Town of Hempstead does not label this department simply as a “Tax Collector.” Its official name is the Receiver of Taxes, and the elected Receiver is Jeanine C. Driscoll.

Online payment

How to view or pay a Hempstead Town tax bill online

The official Receiver of Taxes Payment Center can be used to view current General and School tax bills and make eligible current payments. Before starting, have either your tax bill number or the parcel description used by Nassau County.

Open the official Receiver of Taxes Payment Center Use the Town of Hempstead’s payment system rather than a search-ad link or an unrelated payment website.
Choose the applicable General or School tax lookup Select the bill type you are trying to review or pay.
Search for the correct property Use the tax bill number or the parcel information: school district, section, block and lot. Condominium or cooperative properties may also use building and unit information.
Verify the account before paying Compare the property address, owner information and bill details with your records. Do not submit payment simply because a similar address appears.
Select a payment method and review the fee The town’s online system accepts eligible credit-card, electronic-check and certain debit payments, but processor charges vary by method.
Keep the payment confirmation Save or print the transaction confirmation and later confirm that the payment has posted to the tax account.
Parcel lookup

What if you do not know the section, block and lot?

The Town payment search uses Nassau County parcel identifiers. If you do not have an old tax bill, use the Nassau County Land Records Viewer to search by property address and confirm the parcel information before returning to the Town payment center.

School district identifies the school-tax district attached to the parcel.
Section is part of Nassau County’s tax-map identifier.
Block narrows the parcel within the section.
Lot identifies the specific tax-map parcel.
Do not assume the postal community determines the taxing office. Town of Hempstead properties use many different mailing-city names. Confirm the Town, village status and parcel record before sending money.
Payment methods

Online, in-person, mail and phone payment options

Town of Hempstead current-tax payment routes
Method What to know Important detail
Online Use the Receiver of Taxes Payment Center for eligible current General and School tax bills. Check processor fees before confirming payment.
Main office The Receiver of Taxes office accepts in-person payments at 200 N Franklin Street. Bring the entire tax bill when paying at the office.
Mail Mail the applicable payment stub and properly completed check to the Receiver of Taxes. A timely USPS postmark is important when mailing near the penalty-free deadline.
Phone Current bills may be paid through the payment processor by calling 833-378-1236. Processor convenience fees apply.
Drive-through The town operates EZ-Pay drive-through windows during specified collection periods. Official guidance lists checks and money orders for the drive-through windows.

Online and phone convenience fees

For the current online payment system, the Town lists a 2.3% credit-card convenience fee, with a $1.50 minimum. Electronic-check payments have a $1.50 flat fee, and VISA Personal Debit transactions are listed at $3.95 per transaction. These processor charges do not go to the Town of Hempstead.

Fee information can change: Confirm the amount displayed by the official payment system before submitting a transaction, especially if you found an older Town FAQ or saved payment page showing a different e-check amount.

Paying in person

The main office accepts cash, check, credit card and money order. Credit-card payments made at the main office are also subject to the stated processing charge. Bring the entire tax bill rather than removing the payment stub before arriving.

Paying by mail

For mailed payments, make the check payable as directed by the Receiver of Taxes, sign and date it, make sure the written and numerical amounts agree, and write the school district, section, block and lot on the check. Include the correct payment stub rather than mailing the entire bill.

Mailing near a deadline: Town guidance says an official U.S. Postal Service cancellation date is used to establish a timely mailed payment. A metered postmark is not treated the same way. If timing is close, use a method that provides reliable proof of mailing.
Tax calendar

Town of Hempstead General and School tax due dates

Hempstead property owners generally deal with two separate annual bills: a General Tax bill and a School Tax bill. Each is divided into two halves.

Standard Town of Hempstead property tax payment schedule
Tax installment Due Penalty-free through
First-half General Tax January 1 February 10
Second-half School Tax April 1 May 10
Second-half General Tax July 1 August 10
First-half School Tax October 1 November 10
Possible 1% discount: The Town states that taxpayers who pay both halves of School taxes on or before November 10, or both halves of General taxes on or before February 10, may deduct a 1% discount from the second-half tax. Use the discounted amount printed on the applicable tax bill.

Calendar weekends, holidays or a special collection notice can affect how a particular year’s final payment day is administered. Use the date printed on your current bill and the Town’s current payment schedule as the final reference.

2026 collection hours

2026 extended office and drive-through dates

The Town publishes year-specific extended hours near penalty-free collection deadlines. For 2026, the main Hempstead Tax Office lists 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. collection hours on selected business days.

November 2026 extended office hours

November 2, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

First-half School 2026/27 drive-through

October 26 through November 10, 2026, on eligible business days, generally 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The EZ-Pay windows are behind the Receiver of Taxes office at 200 N Franklin Street. The Town specifies checks and money orders for these drive-through windows.

Year-specific satellite sites, drive-through dates and extended hours can change. Confirm the current Town page before traveling, particularly if you plan to pay on the final penalty-free day.
Delinquent taxes

Where do you pay after the Town collection period closes?

The Receiver of Taxes does not keep collecting every unpaid bill indefinitely. The Town states that unpaid School taxes move to Nassau County after the School levy closes, and unpaid General taxes move to Nassau County after the General levy closes.

School taxes

The Town accepts School tax payments through May 31. Beginning June 1, unpaid School taxes are handled by the Nassau County Treasurer.

General taxes

The Town accepts General tax payments through August 31. Beginning September 1, unpaid General taxes are handled by the Nassau County Treasurer.

Regular listed hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Do not pay an old balance through the current Town portal without checking. Once a levy has been transferred, Nassau County calculates and collects the delinquent amount. County penalties and payment rules can differ from the Town’s current-tax collection rules.

For 2026 delinquent School taxes, Nassau County lists online credit-card and ACH collection beginning June 26, 2026. Tax liens are subject to separate payment rules and are not treated like ordinary current-tax payments.

Assessment & exemptions

The Receiver of Taxes does not set your property assessment

The Receiver of Taxes bills and collects taxes, but Nassau County determines the property assessment used in the tax calculation. If your concern is the assessed value, exemption status or assessment record rather than a payment, start with the Nassau County Department of Assessment.

Payment missing or tax bill problem? Contact the Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes while the levy is still open.
Assessed value looks wrong? Review the Nassau County assessment record rather than asking the Receiver of Taxes to change the valuation.
STAR or another exemption? Check the applicable Nassau County or New York State filing process and deadline.
Separate village tax bill? Contact the incorporated village shown on that bill.

The Town lists programs including Senior Citizens, Veterans, Disability/Limited Income, STAR, Home Improvement, and Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance Personnel exemptions. Eligibility and filing authority differ by program, so use the current official exemption instructions rather than assuming the Receiver can apply a reduction directly to a bill after it is issued.

Jurisdiction check

Town of Hempstead tax bill versus Village of Hempstead tax bill

The Town of Hempstead and the Incorporated Village of Hempstead are different government entities. A property in the Village can receive Town/County and School taxes through the Town Receiver while also receiving a separate Village tax bill from the Village.

Town General Tax Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes
School Tax Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes
Incorporated Village of Hempstead tax bill Village of Hempstead Tax & Water Department

If your bill says “Incorporated Village of Hempstead”: The Village Tax & Water Department uses its own payment system and office at 99 James A. Garner Way. Do not submit that separate Village bill through the Town Receiver’s payment portal.
Troubleshooting

Common Hempstead property-tax problems

The payment center cannot find your property Confirm the school district, section, block and lot in Nassau County’s Land Records Viewer. A street address alone may not match the Town payment search the way you expect.
You paid but the account still appears unpaid Keep your confirmation, allow time for processing, then contact the Receiver of Taxes with the parcel ID, payment date and payment method if the account still does not update.
Your mortgage company normally pays the taxes Check the current tax account rather than assuming the escrow payment has posted. If the bill is still open near a deadline, contact the mortgage servicer and the Receiver before making a duplicate payment.
The assessed value or exemption looks wrong A payment clerk cannot simply change the assessment. Review the Nassau County assessment and exemption record and contact the appropriate assessment authority.
The Town says it can no longer accept the payment Check whether the School levy has passed May 31 or the General levy has passed August 31. If so, obtain the current payoff information from the Nassau County Treasurer.
Your bill is for an incorporated village Identify the village named on the bill and use that village’s tax office for the separate village levy.
Optional services

E-Billing and AutoPay

E-Billing

The Town allows taxpayers to create an account, associate the correct property and elect to receive General and School tax bills electronically. Paper billing can also be retained unless the taxpayer elects the paperless option.

AutoPay

Eligible users can enroll an associated property for automatic School and General tax payments. The payment method remains subject to applicable card or electronic-check processing fees.

Automatic payment is convenient, but property owners should still review reminder emails and confirm that the correct parcel and bank or card account remain associated before each scheduled collection.
