In-person payment window

Township payment transactions are accepted from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This is earlier than the department’s stated 4:30 p.m. closing time.

Current official identification: Somerset County’s 2026 municipal directory lists April Crossen as Hillsborough Township Tax Collector and gives the Tax Collector number as 908-369-8672.

Payment options

How to pay Hillsborough Township property taxes

Hillsborough provides several ways to pay a property-tax bill. The right option depends on whether you need an immediate electronic transaction, prefer to mail a check, want to pay at the Municipal Building, or want automatic quarterly withdrawals.

1
Online

Use Hillsborough’s official online tax-payment system. The Township says e-check payments have no fee, while credit-card payments carry a 2.5% convenience fee.

2
In person

Payments can be made at the Municipal Building. Township-wide in-person payment hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

3
Mail or drop box

The Tax Collector accepts mailed payments. Check payments can also be placed in Township drop boxes outside Finance or in the Police Department entrance vestibule.

Do not mail a payment based on the postmark date. Hillsborough states that postmarks are not accepted for determining whether a tax payment is timely. The payment must reach the Tax Office by the applicable deadline.

Property lookup

Find a Hillsborough property-tax account before paying

The Township’s Tax Information Lookup lets you search for a Hillsborough property using a block and lot, tax account number, or street. Looking up the account first is especially useful after purchasing a home, when a paper bill is missing, or when you want to confirm the balance associated with the correct parcel.

Search options
  • Block and lot
  • Qualifier, when applicable
  • Tax account number
  • Street address
If an address search fails

The official lookup notes that street suffixes may be abbreviated in its records. Try the address without the suffix or alternate forms such as St, Rd or Ave.

Recently bought the property? Not receiving a tax bill does not remove the obligation to pay. Hillsborough directs new owners without a bill to call the Tax Office at 908-369-8672 or use the Tax Information Lookup to find the amount due.
Quarterly schedule

Hillsborough property-tax due dates and grace period

Hillsborough Township property taxes are due four times each year: February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1. The Township provides a 10-day grace period.

February 1

First quarterly property-tax due date.

May 1

Second quarterly property-tax due date.

August 1

Third quarterly property-tax due date.

November 1

Fourth quarterly property-tax due date.

How the 10-day grace period works

The payment must be received by the Tax Office on or before the 10th. If the 10th falls on a weekend or legal holiday, Hillsborough extends the grace period to the next business day.

Payment after the grace period: Hillsborough states that a payment received after the grace period is charged interest back to the original quarterly due date, not merely from the day after the grace period.

Because postmarks are not accepted, mailing a check close to the deadline creates a timing risk. If the due date is near, verify receipt or consider an available payment method that gives you clearer transaction timing.

Automatic payment

Hillsborough ACH direct debit for quarterly taxes

Hillsborough residents may enroll in the Township’s free ACH Direct Debit plan. Once enrolled, property-tax payments are drawn from the designated checking or savings account quarterly.

Get the Township ACH enrollment form

The form is available through the Finance/Tax Collection office and from the official Tax Collector webpage.

Complete the required enrollment fields

Fill in the highlighted sections and sign the form.

Include a voided check

The Township instructs residents to submit a voided check with the enrollment form.

Submit at least 15 days before the quarterly due date

The completed enrollment must reach the office no later than 15 days before the relevant quarterly payment date.

ACH debits are scheduled for February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1. When a debit date falls on a weekend or holiday, the Township says it moves to the next business day.

Selling the property or stopping ACH? Contact the Tax Office promptly. Hillsborough warns that withdrawals will continue if the office is not notified in time to discontinue the enrollment.
Troubleshooting

What to do if a Hillsborough tax payment is late or missing

You never received a tax bill

Use the Township Tax Information Lookup or call 908-369-8672. Failure to receive a bill does not cancel the tax or delinquency interest.

You mailed the payment near the deadline

Do not rely on the postmark. Hillsborough bases timeliness on receipt by the Tax Office.

Your mortgage was recently paid off

Confirm that future tax bills and payment responsibility are correctly associated with you rather than the former mortgage servicer.

Your account shows an unexpected balance

Compare the property identifier and payment history first, then contact Finance/Tax Collection for account-specific clarification.

Delinquent balances and tax sale

The Tax Collector is responsible for enforcement of delinquent municipal taxes. Hillsborough also conducts tax-sale proceedings for qualifying unpaid taxes and municipal charges. If your account is delinquent, contact the Tax Office rather than assuming an online balance is the final amount required to resolve the account.

Tax-sale schedules and delinquent-property lists can change from year to year. Check the current Township Tax Collector page and Township alerts for the applicable year’s notices.

Understanding the bill

Why the third-quarter amount may not equal one-fourth of the annual tax

Hillsborough mails third-quarter estimated tax bills each July. The Township cautions residents not to multiply the third-quarter installment by four to estimate the full year’s tax because adjustments to the annual obligation are reflected in the third- and fourth-quarter bills.

Hillsborough also operates an annual reassessment program. A property’s assessed value may rise, fall or remain unchanged as the local market changes. Assessment questions belong with the Tax Assessor; collection and payment questions belong with Finance/Tax Collection.

Useful distinction: an increase in assessed value does not, by itself, tell you exactly how much your final annual tax will change. The tax bill reflects the applicable tax rates and budgets as well as the property’s assessment.
Property-tax help

Property-tax deductions and New Jersey relief programs

Hillsborough’s Assessor page identifies several locally administered deductions or exemptions, including qualifying senior or disabled-person deductions, veteran deductions and the 100% disabled-veteran property-tax exemption.

New Jersey also administers statewide programs including ANCHOR, Senior Freeze and Stay NJ. Eligibility, application requirements and filing dates can change, so use the current Division of Taxation instructions rather than relying on an older tax-year summary.
