Locate the correct bill Search using the identifiers offered by the payment system and check the owner, account, property or vehicle details before continuing.
Review the balance and tax period Confirm whether you are paying a current installment, a full bill or a delinquent balance.
Select the payment method Online credit and debit card payments carry a 2.95% convenience fee. ACH electronic-check payments carry a $1.50 transaction fee.
Save the confirmation Keep the payment confirmation until the payment appears correctly on your tax account, especially if a DMV registration issue depends on the payment.
Do not expect a same-day DMV clearance after paying a delinquent motor-vehicle tax. Bristol warns that electronic DMV clearance may take roughly 24 to 72 hours after payment. Plan ahead if you need to renew or register a vehicle.

Costs

Online Payment Fees, Returned Payments & Late Interest

Credit or debit card

The City currently lists a 2.95% convenience fee for online card payments.

ACH / electronic check

The online ACH payment fee is currently $1.50 per transaction.

Returned payment

A payment returned unpaid by the bank is subject to a $20 returned-payment fee.

What happens when a Bristol tax payment is late?

Delinquent taxes accrue interest at 1.5% per month, calculated from the original due date. The minimum calculated interest charge is $2. Bristol also notes that payment restrictions can apply when a bill has been delinquent for six months or longer, including requirements for cash or certified funds in some situations.

Mailing on the wrong day can still make a payment late. To avoid interest, Bristol requires the payment to be received by the last day to pay or carry an official U.S. Postal Service postmark dated no later than that day. Bank bill-pay services may withdraw money before they actually mail the check, so the withdrawal date is not necessarily the tax-payment date.

Paying a Current Bristol Tax Bill at M&T Bank

Bristol also allows certain current, non-adjusted tax bills to be paid at M&T Bank branches during the City’s stated collection windows. The branch does not have to be in Bristol.

July collection window

July 1, 2026 through August 3, 2026.

January collection window

January 1, 2027 through February 1, 2027.

Bring the current tax bill coupon and payment by cash or check. The City states there is no fee for this bank-payment option, but holiday closures can affect branch availability.

Adjusted or delinquent accounts: Do not assume a bank branch can accept every tax balance. Contact the Bristol Tax Office before going to the bank when the bill has been adjusted, is delinquent or has another account problem.

Problem solving

What to Do With a Late, Wrong or Missing Bristol Tax Bill

You paid, but DMV still shows a tax issue Allow for Bristol’s electronic DMV reporting time. The City warns that a delinquent-tax clearance can take about 24–72 hours after payment.
You sold, traded, lost or totaled a vehicle Contact the Bristol Assessor’s Office about a possible adjustment rather than asking the Tax Collector to change the assessment.
You never received the bill Do not assume the tax disappears. Search the account online or contact the Tax Office to confirm the balance and deadline.
Your payment was returned Contact the Tax Office promptly. The City lists a $20 returned-payment fee, and unpaid tax may continue to accrue interest.
Your bill is more than six months delinquent Ask the Tax Office which payment forms are currently acceptable before visiting; cash or certified funds may be required.
The assessed value looks wrong The Tax Collector collects the bill but does not set the assessment. Assessment questions belong with the Assessor’s Office.

Tax Collector vs. Assessor: Where Should You Go?

1 Tax Collector

Use the Tax Office for bill balances, payments, payment receipts, delinquent taxes, interest and tax-collection questions.

2 Assessor

Use the Assessor for assessment questions and vehicle-bill adjustments when a vehicle was sold, stolen, totaled or otherwise disposed of.

3 DMV

A delinquent local motor-vehicle tax can affect DMV transactions. Bristol transmits tax-clearance information electronically after qualifying payments are processed.
