Online service

Pay or look up a Waterbury tax bill online

The City of Waterbury directs taxpayers to its online tax inquiry and payment system for car, real estate and personal property taxes. Start from the City’s official online-payments page rather than relying on a payment link found in an advertisement or an unrelated search result.

How to pay a Waterbury tax bill online

Start from the City payment page Use the City of Waterbury Tax Collection page and choose the option for car, real estate or property taxes.
Find the correct tax account Search the official inquiry system using the identifying information requested by the portal. Confirm that the account and property or vehicle information match before continuing.
Review the balance and tax year Check whether the amount is current or delinquent and make sure you are paying the intended bill or installment.
Review payment charges The City states that credit-card transactions carry a transaction fee. Check the amount displayed by the payment system before authorizing the transaction because the current City page does not publish one universal percentage for every online payment type.
Submit and keep confirmation Save the confirmation or receipt after paying. The Tax Office recommends retaining tax-payment records for long-term reference.
Motor-vehicle timing matters: the City warns that an online motor-vehicle tax payment can take up to 72 hours to process. If a delinquent vehicle tax is blocking a DMV transaction, read the motor-vehicle section below before choosing online payment.

Deadlines

When Waterbury property taxes are due

Waterbury’s regular real estate, motor vehicle and business personal property taxes generally use July and January installments. The City states that the first installment is due July 1 and the second is due January 1.

Waterbury tax-payment schedule
Tax or installment Due date City guidance
First regular installment July 1 The City instructs taxpayers to pay or obtain a qualifying postmark by August 1 to avoid delinquency.
Second regular installment January 1 The City instructs taxpayers to pay or obtain a qualifying postmark by February 1 to avoid delinquency.
Bills totaling $200 or less Single installment The City says these bills are due in one installment rather than being split into two.
Supplemental motor vehicle tax January 1 Applies to qualifying vehicles registered after the October 1 assessment date during the supplemental period.
Do not wait for a January reminder. The City states that a second-installment bill is not sent for regular real estate, motor vehicle and personal property taxes. Keep the original bill or verify the amount through the online inquiry system.

If a deadline lands around a weekend or holiday, confirm the legally applicable payment date from the current tax bill or Tax Collector rather than assuming the deadline automatically changes.

Do not send cash through the mail. If you need a returned receipt, the City instructs taxpayers to include a self-addressed envelope with the mailed payment.

Walk-in payment methods

The City lists cash, check, money order, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and debit cards as accepted walk-in methods. A transaction fee applies to credit-card payments.

DMV-related taxes

Waterbury motor vehicle tax and DMV clearance

Motor-vehicle tax problems deserve extra time if you need to register or renew a vehicle. Waterbury states that online payments may take up to 72 hours to process, and an electronic DMV clearance may take another 24 to 48 hours after the payment has processed.

DMV releases are electronic. The City states that Connecticut DMV no longer accepts a paper tax release from the Waterbury Tax Collector.

If you have delinquent motor-vehicle taxes and need a tax release, the City’s current payment instructions say those delinquent taxes must be paid in person with cash or credit card to obtain the release. For a time-sensitive DMV issue, call the motor-vehicle tax line at 203-574-6811 before paying.

Right office

Tax Collector or Assessor: who should you contact?

The Tax Collector collects the bill. The Assessor determines taxable values and handles many assessment-related adjustments, exemptions and classification issues. Sending an assessment question to the collection office can delay resolution.

Contact the Tax Collector

For the amount due, payment status, payment history, delinquent taxes, interest, mailed payments, online payment questions or a missing payment.

Contact the Assessor

For assessed value, exemptions, tax-relief programs, assessment corrections or questions about why property or a vehicle was assessed.

Waterbury Assessor contact

The Assessor’s Office is also at 235 Grand Street, on the Courtyard Level. Its main phone number is 203-574-6821, and its posted hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Delinquent taxes

What happens if a Waterbury tax payment is late?

Waterbury’s Tax Collection page states that delinquent property taxes accrue interest at 1.5% for each month or fraction of a month, equivalent to 18% annually, calculated from the original due date. The City also states a minimum interest charge of $2 for a delinquent bill.

Connecticut’s current municipal tax statutes govern delinquency and interest. The law also contains narrow circumstances in which interest may be waived, including qualifying situations involving an error attributable to the assessor or tax collector and required municipal approval. Do not assume a late fee can be waived simply because a bill was not received.

Not receiving a bill does not normally cancel the tax. The City tells property owners that they remain responsible for knowing when taxes are due and that failure to receive the bill does not by itself remove tax, interest or applicable collection costs.

If your balance is already delinquent

Look up the current balance instead of paying an old amount from a previous bill.
Ask the Tax Collector which payment methods are acceptable for the delinquent account.
For a motor-vehicle DMV issue, confirm the clearance procedure before paying.
Keep the receipt or online confirmation after payment.

Serious real-estate tax delinquency

The City publishes a separate Tax Sale Information page for properties placed into the municipal tax-auction process. If you have received a tax-sale, marshal, lien or foreclosure-related notice, use the contact information on that notice and verify the current status promptly rather than relying only on a general online balance.

Before paying

Quick checks that can prevent a payment problem

Confirm that the account belongs to the correct property, vehicle or business.
Check the tax year and installment before submitting money.
Review any card or online transaction fee before authorizing payment.
Do not mail cash to the Tax Collector.
Keep the payment confirmation or receipt.
Allow extra processing time if a delinquent motor-vehicle tax affects DMV clearance.
