Cheshire tax due dates for 2026–27
The Town’s current tax schedule is based on the 2025 Grand List. Different types of taxable property do not all follow the same installment schedule.
| Bill type | Due date | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Real estate | July 1, 2026 and January 1, 2027 | Real estate taxes are split into two installments. A real estate bill under $100 is payable in one installment on July 1, 2026. |
| Business personal property | July 1, 2026 | One annual installment. Cheshire states that personal property tax is not prorated when a business closes or sells during the tax period. |
| Motor vehicle | July 1, 2026 | Applies to vehicles registered on the October 1, 2025 assessment date. |
| Supplemental motor vehicle | January 1, 2027 | Applies on a prorated basis to applicable vehicles registered after the October 1 assessment date and before the end of the following September. |
| Sewer use charge | January 1 annually | The Town publishes separate residential and commercial/industrial billing periods for sewer use. |
Online tax payment fees
Online payments are convenient, but the Town’s current fee schedule means an e-check can be substantially less expensive than a card for a large property-tax bill.
| Payment method | Current published fee |
|---|---|
| Credit card | 2.5% of the payment, $2 minimum |
| Visa debit card | 1%, $2 minimum |
| E-check | $2.50 flat fee |
| Returned payment | $15 administrative fee |

What happens when a Cheshire tax payment is late?
Connecticut law generally makes a municipal tax installment delinquent when it remains unpaid after the statutory payment period. State law sets delinquent-tax interest at 18% per year, calculated as 1.5% for each month or fraction of a month, with a statutory minimum interest charge of $2 per installment unless properly waived.
Because interest runs from the original due date rather than only from the day after the payment window closes, a late payment can immediately include more than a few days of interest.
Special rule for delinquent Cheshire taxes
Cheshire’s municipal ordinance states that delinquent taxes are payable only by cash, certified check or bank check. If your account is already delinquent, confirm the acceptable method with the Collector of Revenue before attempting an online payment.
Mailing close to a deadline
Town notices emphasize the importance of an official U.S. Postal Service postmark. Simply placing an envelope in a mailbox near the deadline does not necessarily guarantee the required postmark date. If timing is critical, follow the Town’s current legal notice and USPS instructions.
Need a DMV release after paying Cheshire motor vehicle tax?
A normal online payment may not be suitable when you need a tax clearance quickly to register a vehicle. Cheshire states that if a DMV release is required, payment should be made at the Collector of Revenue office using cash or a cashier’s check.
Tax Collector or Assessor: which Cheshire office do you need?
The Collector of Revenue handles billing and collection. The Assessor handles the underlying property assessment, ownership records, exemptions and valuation information used to build the Grand List.
