Town of Canton Tax Collector: Pay Your Bill and Check Office Hours
The Canton Tax Collector handles collection of Town property taxes, motor vehicle taxes, business personal property taxes and sewer usage charges. Use this page to identify the correct payment route, office hours, due-date pattern and contact before submitting a payment.
Tax assessment questions are different from payment questions. The Tax Collector handles billing and collection, while the Assessor handles assessed values, exemptions and many vehicle-assessment corrections.

How to pay a Town of Canton tax bill
The Town lists three main payment routes: online, by mail and in person at Town Hall. Online payments carry transaction fees, so compare the fee with the convenience before submitting the transaction.
Online tax payment fees
The Town currently describes its online payment charges as non-refundable. Because payment processors and fee schedules can change, review the amount shown by the official system before authorizing a payment.
| Payment method | Published fee | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic check | $0.95 per transaction | Confirm bank and account information carefully before submitting. |
| Visa debit card | $3.95 per transaction | The Town lists this separately from other card payments. |
| Other credit/debit cards | 2.5% per transaction | The published minimum fee is $2.00. |
| Visa for sewer charges | Not accepted | The Town states that Visa debit and credit cards cannot be used for sewer usage charges. |
Canton property tax due dates
Canton says annual tax bills are mailed at the end of June. The exact amount and installment schedule depend on the bill type, so use the bill and official account record as the controlling information for your payment.

| Real estate under $100 | July 1 | First business day of August |
| Real estate over $100 | July 1 and January 1 | First business day of August and first business day of February |
| Business/personal property under $100 | July 1 | First business day of August |
| Business/personal property over $100 | July 1 and January 1 | First business day of August and first business day of February |
| Motor vehicle | July 1 | First business day of August |
| Supplemental motor vehicle | January 1 | First business day of February |

Motor vehicle tax problems and DMV clearance
Canton’s current guidance says motor-vehicle bills generated from the October 1 assessment are due in full July 1, with timely payment through the first business day of August. Supplemental motor-vehicle taxes are due January 1 and are payable through the first business day of February.
Contact the Assessor about the documents required for an assessment adjustment. The Town notes that DMV does not automatically notify the municipality when a registration is cancelled or a vehicle is disposed of.
The Assessor may require proof that the vehicle was registered in another state plus Connecticut registration or plate documentation before a bill can be adjusted.
The Town instructs taxpayers needing DMV clearance to pay online by credit card and then contact the Tax Office using the instructions on the official page.
Sewer usage charges collected by the Tax Collector
The Tax Collector also bills and collects Canton sewer usage charges. Beginning with the schedule effective October 1, 2025, the Town states that annual sewer usage charges are payable in two installments: October 1 and the following April 1.
- The annual sewer bill is mailed once, near the end of September.
- The Town does not send a second bill for the April installment.
- The official online sewer lookup requires the bill number.
- Visa debit and credit cards are not accepted for sewer usage charges according to the Town’s current payment notice.
