How to pay a Stamford tax bill
Stamford offers four main ways to pay: online, by phone, by mail and in person. The correct choice depends on how quickly the payment must post, whether the account is delinquent and whether you are dealing with a DMV registration hold.
The City links its tax payment and billing search service to MyTaxBill.org. The portal covers real estate, personal property and motor vehicle taxes.
Call the City’s automated payment line at 844-543-1263. Different tax types require different bill or account identifiers.

Stamford tax due dates and delinquency dates
Stamford’s regular property-tax schedule separates real estate bills from personal property and motor vehicle bills. Real estate taxes are paid in two installments, while regular personal property and motor vehicle taxes are generally billed in one July installment.
| Tax type | Due date | Last date listed without delinquent interest |
|---|---|---|
| Real estate — first half | July 1 | Through August 1 |
| Real estate — second half | January 1 | Through February 1 |
| Personal property | July 1 | Through August 1 |
| Motor vehicle | July 1 | Through August 1 |
| Supplemental motor vehicle | January 1 | Through February 1 |
The City says July bills are mailed on or about June 15 and January bills are mailed on or about December 15. Not receiving a bill does not remove the taxpayer’s responsibility to obtain the bill and pay on time.
Online payment fees and tax interest
| Item | City-listed charge | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Electronic check | $0.95 per transaction | Online or phone payment processing |
| Credit card | 2.99% of total; $3.95 minimum | Visa, Mastercard, Discover and Amex |
| Visa debit card | $4.95 per transaction | Card payment |
| Returned payment | $20 | Returned check or returned online item |
| Tax lien fee | $24 | City tax lien is applied |
Delinquent taxes accrue interest at 1.5% for each full or partial month, equivalent to 18% annually, with a minimum interest charge of $2. The City states that the Tax Collector does not have authority to waive statutory delinquent interest.
Find your Stamford tax bill or assessment record
The tax billing system and the assessment database answer different questions. Use Tax Collection records when you need a bill, balance or payment history. Use Property Assessment records when the issue concerns assessed value, property characteristics, exemptions or the underlying assessment.
Use the Stamford tax billing portal for real estate, personal property and motor vehicle billing information.
The Property Assessment office manages the Grand List, property valuation records and assessment-related exemptions and appeals.
Do not confuse the Tax Collector with the Assessor
The Tax Collector handles billing and collection. The Assessor determines taxable assessments and maintains assessment records. If you disagree with the value placed on a property, paying the bill and challenging the assessment are separate issues.

What happens when Stamford taxes are late?
Once a tax becomes delinquent, interest is calculated from the original due date at 1.5% per full or partial month. Because even part of a month counts, waiting a few extra days after delinquency can increase the amount required to bring the account current.
Unpaid real estate taxes can lead to liens and further collection enforcement. Contact Tax Collection early if the account cannot be paid in full.
Delinquent motor vehicle taxes are reported to Connecticut DMV and can prevent registration renewal or a new registration until clearance is processed.
Business personal property delinquency can lead to liens and other collection measures described by the City.
Refunds and transfers of Stamford tax payments
If the same tax was paid twice or a payment needs to be transferred, Stamford requires a refund or transfer application and supporting proof of payment. Depending on how the original payment was made, that proof can include canceled checks, validated receipts, online payment confirmations, card statements or bank statements.
If an attorney, bank, mortgage company or another person or organization made the payment on your behalf, the City may also require written confirmation from that payer showing that the refund should go to you or that the amount should be transferred.

Common Stamford tax-payment problems
Look up the bill online or call Tax Collection. The City states that failure to receive a bill does not excuse late interest.
That is generally an assessment issue rather than a collection issue. Start with Property Assessment rather than asking the Tax Collector to change the valuation.
Allow for the City’s stated clearance period based on payment method. Online payments are not described as producing immediate DMV clearance.
Keep both payment records and follow Stamford’s refund or transfer procedure. Mortgage-company payments are a common reason a real estate installment can be duplicated.
