Payment options

How to pay Scotch Plains property taxes

Scotch Plains offers several ways to pay property taxes. The safest choice depends on how close you are to the grace-period deadline and whether you also need to pay sewer charges.

1
Online

Use the Township-authorized Edmunds GovPay portal to review the account and make an online payment. AutoPay is also available through the portal.

2
In person

Visit the Tax Collector’s office at 430 Park Avenue. The Township states that in-person payments are accepted by check or cash; credit-card payments are made online.

3
Mail, BillPay or drop box

You can mail a check, use qualifying bank BillPay, or place a non-cash payment in the 24-hour drop box in the Police Department at 430 Park Avenue.

Bank BillPay update: The Township now accepts qualifying BillPay payments electronically and states that it does not charge a Township fee for this method. Use the correct property-tax account number, and set up a separate payee if you are also paying sewer charges.
Online process

Steps to look up and pay a Scotch Plains tax bill online

Open the Township-authorized payment portal Use the Scotch Plains Edmunds GovPay portal rather than relying on an advertisement or an unfamiliar payment page found through search.
Find the correct property-tax account Use the account information requested by the portal. If you do not know your account number, the Township says you can look it up online or call extensions 207 or 208.
Review the property and balance Confirm that the property, tax account and amount due match your bill before submitting a payment.
Select the payment you intend to make When paying a specific installment, review the portal choices carefully so you do not unintentionally pay a different quarter or service.
Review payment details before submitting Confirm the amount, payment account and effective date. Near a deadline, avoid assuming that a payment scheduled for a later date will count as received on the day you created it.
Save your confirmation Keep the confirmation or receipt until the payment is reflected in the property-tax account.
Deadlines

Scotch Plains property-tax due dates and grace period

The regular New Jersey quarterly property-tax schedule used by Scotch Plains is February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1. The Township normally provides a 10-calendar-day grace period.

Regular quarterly property-tax schedule
Quarter Statutory due date Normal grace period Important point
1st quarter February 1 Through February 10 If the 10th falls on a weekend or holiday, the Township says the grace period extends to the next business day.
2nd quarter May 1 Through May 10 A late payment can trigger interest calculated back to the original due date.
3rd quarter August 1 Normally through August 10 For 2026 only, Scotch Plains extended the third-quarter grace period to October 5 because final bills were issued later.
4th quarter November 1 Standard grace-period rules apply The Township’s 2026 notice states that there is no special fourth-quarter extension.
Do not rely on a postmark. Scotch Plains states that postmarks are not accepted for determining whether a tax payment was timely. A mailed payment must be physically received by the Township within the applicable grace period to avoid interest.

The Township also states that not receiving a bill does not remove the obligation to pay taxes, sewer charges or applicable interest.

Account lookup

How to find your Scotch Plains tax account or reprint a bill

The Township says property owners can view account information and reprint a tax bill online. This is useful when a bill is missing, you need the account number for bank BillPay, or you want to verify whether a recent payment has posted.

Confirm that the property shown belongs to the correct Scotch Plains tax account.
Check the amount due before sending a payment.
Use the tax-account number shown on your bill for bank BillPay.
Call extensions 207 or 208 if you cannot identify the correct account number.
Mortgage escrow: If your mortgage company pays the property taxes, the Township says the original tax bill is sent to the bank and an advice copy is mailed to the property owner. If the mortgage has been paid off, contact the tax office so the bank code can be removed.

BillPay setup

Payee: Township of Scotch Plains Tax

Address: 430 Park Avenue, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076-1716

Account number: use the property-tax account number shown on the bill or found through the online portal.

If you need to pay both property taxes and sewer charges through bank BillPay, the Township instructs residents to create two separate payees.

Use the 24-hour drop box

A payment drop box is located in the Police Department at 430 Park Avenue and is accessible 24 hours a day. Do not put cash in the drop box. The Township says drop-box payments are credited on the next business day.

Pay in person

The Tax Collector’s office accepts in-person payments at 430 Park Avenue. The Township currently states that check and cash are accepted in the office and that credit-card payments are available through the website.

Late balances

What happens when Scotch Plains property taxes are late?

When a payment is received after the grace period, interest is calculated from the original statutory due date rather than from the day after the grace period ends.

First $1,500 of delinquency

The Township publishes an interest rate of 8% per year on the first $1,500 of delinquent principal.

Amount above $1,500

The Township publishes an 18% annual interest rate on delinquency over $1,500.

Year-end penalty

A 6% year-end penalty may apply to delinquencies exceeding $10,000 that remain as of December 31.

Payments are applied to interest and fees first and then to the oldest outstanding principal. The Township also lists a $20 service charge for returned checks and notes that certified funds may be required for future payments after a returned payment.

Need an exact payoff amount? Contact the Tax Collector before sending payment when a balance is delinquent. Interest changes over time, so an older bill or account screenshot may not show the amount required on the day payment is received.
Tax sale & liens

If your Scotch Plains property is in tax sale

The Tax Collector is required to conduct a tax sale for qualifying delinquent municipal tax and sewer charges. If prior-year charges remain unpaid by the tax-sale date, the delinquency can be sold and a lien placed against the property.

Tax-sale notice changes the payment process. Scotch Plains states that after a tax-sale notice has been issued, payment can no longer be made through the normal online portal. The Township directs affected property owners to use certified funds, money order or cash as required to remove the property from the sale.

If a lien has already been placed on the property, contact the Tax Collector at 908-322-6700, extension 207 or 208, for the current redemption amount and instructions. Do not estimate a redemption amount from an older balance because additional interest and statutory charges may apply.

Right office

Tax Collector vs. Tax Assessor in Scotch Plains

The Tax Collector and Tax Assessor handle different parts of the property-tax system. Sending an assessment problem to the collection office can delay an answer, so use the distinction below.

Contact the Tax Collector

For tax payments, balances, due dates, receipts, delinquent accounts, bank codes, tax-sale or lien-payment questions, and payment-account help.

Contact the Tax Assessor

For assessed value, property-record issues, mailing-address changes, added assessments, qualifying municipal deductions and other assessment-related matters.

The Township contact directory identifies Mike Ross as Tax Assessor and lists 908-322-6700, extension 206, for that office.

Added assessments: The Township says added-assessment bills for property improvements are generally mailed in October and are due November 1, February 1 and May 1 in addition to regular property-tax installments. Questions about why an added assessment was issued belong with the Tax Assessor.
Property records

Changing the mailing address for a tax bill

The Township directs property owners to submit mailing-address changes to the Tax Assessor rather than the Tax Collector. Scotch Plains states that only one mailing address can be recorded for a property and that separate tax and sewer mailing addresses cannot be maintained.

If the problem is only that you did not receive a bill, check the online account as well. Missing a mailed bill does not stop the tax deadline or automatically remove interest.

New Jersey relief

Property-tax relief programs for Scotch Plains residents

Scotch Plains homeowners and renters may qualify for New Jersey property-tax relief depending on age, residency, income, disability status and whether they own or rent their principal residence. These programs are administered by the State rather than the Township Tax Collector.

ANCHOR

New Jersey’s ANCHOR program provides property-tax relief to qualifying homeowners and renters based on the applicable program-year rules.

Senior Freeze

This program reimburses qualifying senior or disabled residents for eligible increases in property taxes or mobile-home park site fees.

Stay NJ

Stay NJ provides property-tax benefits to qualifying older homeowners under the current State eligibility and funding rules.

2026 filing deadline: New Jersey’s Division of Taxation currently lists November 2, 2026 as the filing deadline for the 2025 property-tax-relief application cycle. Eligible seniors and certain disability-benefit recipients use the combined PAS-1 application for ANCHOR, Senior Freeze and Stay NJ.
Troubleshooting

Common Scotch Plains tax-payment problems

You do not know the account number Look up the property through the authorized payment portal or call the Tax Collector at extensions 207 or 208.
Your bank says BillPay will send a paper check Recheck the Township payee address and your tax-account number. The Township notes that incorrect setup information may cause a bank to use a paper check instead of the electronic BillPay route.
Your mailed payment is close to the deadline A postmark does not control timeliness. The Township must physically receive the payment within the grace period, so consider another official payment method if mailing time is uncertain.
You scheduled an online payment on the last day Confirm the portal’s effective payment date. During the extended October 5, 2026 deadline, the Township specifically warned that a scheduled payment created that day could receive a later effective date and be considered late.
Your assessment looks wrong Contact the Tax Assessor rather than withholding or changing the tax payment on your own. Assessment disputes and tax collection are separate processes.
You received a tax-sale notice Contact the Tax Collector directly because the regular online portal may no longer accept the delinquent payment and certified funds may be required.
