Rusk County Tax Collector: Pay Taxes, Office Hours & Address

Use this guide to find the correct Rusk County tax record, pay a property-tax bill, confirm the Henderson office hours, understand penalties and route appraisal, exemption or vehicle questions to the right office.

The official tax site has one especially important instruction: you do not need to create an account just to pay taxes online. Search the property first, open the correct record and use its Tax Summary.

Do not confuse the offices: The Rusk County Tax Office is in the City of Henderson. It is not the Henderson County Tax Office in Athens, Texas. Also, the county’s Overton Justice of the Peace office is not the Tax Assessor-Collector.

Tax Lien Warning

⛔ Texas Attorney Fee Warning: After July 1, delinquent property taxes are referred to a collection attorney. An additional 15–20% attorney fee is added on top of your penalty and interest. On a $5,000 tax bill, this adds $750–$1,000 instantly. Pay before July 1 to avoid this.

Official online workflow

How to pay Rusk County property taxes online

The Rusk County Tax Office specifically warns taxpayers not to create an account merely to make a tax payment. Use the public property search first.

Open the official Rusk County Tax Office search Start on the county tax-office site, not a sponsored payment result or a generic third-party property website.
Search with the simplest identifier you have Use owner name, owner ID, property ID or address. If you have the tax statement, property ID is usually the cleanest starting point.
Confirm the correct property Match owner name, property address, parcel/property ID, legal description and tax year before opening the record.
Open Tax Summary The tax-office homepage instructs users to select the property and click the Tax Summary button to continue toward payment.
Check every taxing unit and amount A Rusk County bill may contain county, city, school, college, ESD, groundwater or other taxing-unit charges. Do not assume one line is the entire bill.
Choose full or partial payment deliberately The office FAQ says full and partial property-tax payments are accepted online. If you are paying only the current year while older taxes remain delinquent, make sure the intended year is clear.
Review the processor charge before submitting The county confirms online credit, debit and e-check payment options, but the current property-tax convenience-fee amount is not clearly stated on its public FAQ. Use the fee shown at checkout before authorizing payment.
Save evidence Keep the confirmation page, payment date, amount, property ID and bank/card record until the tax search clearly reflects the payment.
Property search

How to search Rusk County tax records without opening the wrong property

Useful tax-office search fields
Search field What to enter When it is most useful What to verify next
Owner name LASTNAME FIRSTNAME format You know the owner but not the property ID. Address, parcel, tax year and legal description.
Owner ID The owner identifier from the record Several properties belong to the same owner. You opened the intended parcel.
Property ID Exact property/parcel ID You have a tax statement or prior record. Tax year and balance status.
Address Property address You know the location but not the owner spelling. Owner and legal description.
Advanced search Geo ID, legal, abstract, subdivision, lease or other criteria Mineral, lease, acreage or difficult parcel searches. Parcel identity before paying.
Useful filters: The official search can limit results by tax year, property type and “Show only Properties with Tax Due.” Use the tax-year filter before assuming an older balance is current.
Troubleshooting

No Rusk County property found? Try these fixes in order

Name search fails Try only the last name, then add the first name. Compare spelling with the deed or appraisal record.
Address search fails Search the street name alone or use the property ID from a prior statement.
Too many properties appear Use the advanced search with property ID, Geo ID, subdivision, abstract or owner ID.
Tax bill exists but value looks wrong Stop before paying based on a guessed value and check the Rusk County Appraisal District record.
New purchase is missing The tax statement may still have been mailed to the prior owner. Search the parcel and confirm ownership/mailing records with the appraisal district.
Delinquent amount seems outdated Call for a current payoff; penalty, interest and collection costs may change the amount.
Call script “I am checking property ID [number] at [address]. The owner shown is [name] and I need to confirm [current-year balance / delinquent payoff / whether my payment posted].”
Payment routes

Online, in-person, mail and partial-payment options

Rusk County property-tax payment choices
Method Official guidance Best use Do this before paying
Online Credit, debit and e-check; full or partial payment Fast remote payment Search the property first and review the checkout fee.
In person Cash, check, debit or credit card Receipt or staff assistance Avoid the 1:00–2:00 lunch closure.
Mail Check; include tax statement if possible Payment without an office visit Write the property/account information and allow delivery time.
Current-year partial payment Accepted by the office Reducing the current balance before delinquency Partial payment does not automatically change the delinquency deadline on the unpaid portion.
Delinquent monthly arrangement Arrangement must be made with the office Structured repayment of overdue taxes Ask for terms and the current payoff first.

Paying current taxes while delinquent taxes exist? The county FAQ says you may pay current taxes first, but you should clearly indicate that the payment is to be applied to the current tax year.

Local clarification

Overton taxpayers: where should you go?

If you searched for “Rusk County Tax Collector Overton,” the important distinction is between a taxing entity and a tax-office location.

Overton appears on Rusk County tax bills

The Rusk County tax system lists the City of Overton and Overton ISD among taxing entities. That means Overton property can be collected through the Rusk County Tax Office system.

The listed tax office is in Henderson

The official county tax site, Texas Comptroller directory and TxDMV list the Tax Assessor-Collector at 202 N. Main in Henderson. The county’s Overton office listing is Justice of the Peace Precinct 1, not the Tax Assessor-Collector.

Henderson name trap: Henderson is the city where the Rusk County Tax Office is located. Henderson County is a different Texas county whose tax office is in Athens. If you meant that county, use the Henderson County Tax Collector guide instead.
Texas property-tax timeline

When Rusk County taxes become due, delinquent and more expensive

Rusk County says certified values are loaded after the appraisal district delivers the tax roll, current taxes are levied in October and tax statements are generated for owners and mortgage companies. Its FAQ says statements are mailed by November.

October — current taxes are levied If you bought property during the year, do not assume the statement will automatically reach you; the prior owner may still receive it.
Mid-December — missing bill check The county FAQ tells owners who have not received a statement by mid-December to contact the office for another statement or amount due.
January 31 — normal last day before delinquency Texas law generally makes property taxes delinquent if not paid before February 1. Your bill’s printed delinquency date controls when special or late-mailed billing rules apply.
February 1 — penalty and interest begin on most unpaid current taxes Texas law starts a 6% penalty for the first calendar month of delinquency plus monthly interest; additional amounts accrue as the balance remains unpaid.
July 1 — collection costs can become much more expensive Rusk County says taxes still delinquent on July 1 may incur an additional penalty of up to 20% to defray collection costs. Ask for an exact payoff instead of calculating it yourself.
Do not use the original bill amount after delinquency. Penalty, interest and collection costs can change the payoff. Call 903-657-0315 before making a late payment if the online total is unclear.
Edge cases

Missing bill, new owner, wrong address or delinquent tax after purchase

No statement by mid-December Search online or call for the amount due. Not receiving a statement does not erase the tax or stop penalty and interest.
You bought the property mid-year The October statement may go to the previous owner. Search the parcel and confirm the mailing address rather than waiting.
You received someone else’s statement Return it to the Tax Office with the correct owner name if known, or note that the owner is unknown.
Name or address is wrong Address/name corrections are tied to appraisal records; the tax-office FAQ says written changes can be sent to the Appraisal District or Tax Office, and online record requests may also be available.
You bought property with delinquent taxes Rusk County warns that delinquent taxes follow the property. A current owner can receive the delinquent bill even when the debt originated before purchase.
You need a part-year bill The Tax Office FAQ says it does not prorate the tax bill. Buyer/seller proration at closing does not create a separate county bill.
Records routing

Rusk County tax records vs appraisal records vs deed records

“Rusk County tax records” can mean three different public systems. Use the one that matches the question.

Choose the correct Rusk County record system
You need Use What it shows Best next action
Tax bill or balance Rusk County Tax Office Property, tax year, taxing units, tax due and payment-related data Open Tax Summary before paying.
Appraised value or exemption Rusk County Appraisal District Market/appraised value, ownership, exemptions, property characteristics and appraisal records Contact RCAD if value or exemption is wrong.
Deed or recorded land document Rusk County Clerk official-record search Recorded grantor/grantee, document, subdivision and land-record index data Use the Clerk search, not the tax payment portal.
Assessor vs appraiser

Who fixes appraised value, exemptions, ownership or protest issues?

The Rusk County Tax Assessor-Collector collects and calculates taxes from the certified roll. The Rusk County Appraisal District (RCAD) determines market value and administers exemptions and special valuations.

Tax Office or Appraisal District?
Problem Correct office Why
How much do I owe? Tax Office Current tax balance and payment status.
Was my payment posted? Tax Office Collector records payments and receipts.
Why is my value higher? Rusk CAD The appraisal district determines value.
Homestead / over-65 / disability / veteran exemption missing Rusk CAD Exemptions require appraisal-district approval.
Legal description or ownership is wrong Rusk CAD Property record corrections start with appraisal records and supporting documents.
I want to protest value Rusk CAD / ARB The Appraisal Review Board hears appraisal protests.

2026 protest timing: RCAD’s 2026 protest notice listed the usual deadline as May 15, 2026 or 30 days after the appraisal notice was mailed, whichever was later. That regular date has passed. Special or late-protest rules can differ, so contact RCAD instead of assuming the protest window is still open.
Tax payment while appealing: The 2026 protest notice says an owner pursuing an appeal must still pay the applicable required amount—such as the undisputed tax, the amount under the ARB order or the previous-year amount—to preserve appeal rights. Get case-specific instructions from RCAD or qualified counsel.
Tax office services

Motor-vehicle services handled by the Rusk County Tax Office

Vehicle registration renewals and stickers
Vehicle title transfers
Change of address on motor-vehicle records
Disabled parking placards and certain plates
Copies of registration receipts
Temporary registration and common title/registration services
Call the right number: Property-tax questions use 903-657-0315. TxDMV and the county contact page list 903-657-0338 for the Tax Assessor-Collector office/motor-vehicle work.
Do not rely on old vehicle instructions without checking TxDMV. Inspection, registration and title requirements change more often than property-tax office details. Use the current TxDMV page or call before a document-sensitive visit.
2026 tax-rate documents

How to use Rusk County tax-rate worksheets without confusing them with your bill

The tax-office Data and Records page currently publishes 2026 tax calculation worksheets for Rusk County and multiple cities, school districts and special districts, including Henderson and Overton. The property-search homepage may still display a prior year’s adopted rate table during the tax-rate cycle.

Use a worksheet for rate transparency

Tax-rate calculation worksheets explain no-new-revenue and voter-approval calculations for a taxing unit. They are useful for understanding the rate-setting process.

Use Tax Summary for the amount you owe

Your payable balance depends on the certified taxable value, exemptions, each applicable taxing unit and payment status. Do not multiply a single county rate and assume it is the whole bill.

Filename warning: The county webpage links a file labeled “2026 Notice of Tax Rates.pdf,” but the document itself is titled “Notice About 2025 Tax Rates.” Do not use the filename alone as proof of a final 2026 adopted rate. Use the current tax statement, Tax Summary and the latest taxing-unit documents.
