Alachua County Tax Collector DMV: Appointments, Property Tax & Gainesville Offices

The Alachua County Tax Collector is a county constitutional office that also acts as an agent for Florida motorist services. That is why the same office handles many driver-license, tag, title and registration transactions while also collecting property taxes.

Use this guide to choose the correct Gainesville branch, know when an appointment is required, bring the right documents, pay property tax safely, and avoid a wasted trip for road tests, HazMat, title transfers or vehicle sales tax.

Do not choose a branch by distance alone. All three Gainesville public branches provide standard driver-license services, but Class E road tests are Northwest-only and CDL HazMat applications are Southwest-only. Confirm the service before driving across town.

What are you trying to do?

1
Driver license or ID

2
Tag, title or registration

Renew online or by kiosk when eligible; use a branch for title transfers, VIN issues or transactions that need original documents.

Gainesville branch chooser

Which Alachua County Tax Collector DMV office should you use?

The official office page lists three public branches in Gainesville. Public counter hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday are closed.

Gainesville branches and the service exceptions that matter
Branch Address Use it for Critical exception
Downtown 12 SE 1st Street, Gainesville, FL 32601 Standard driver-license, motor-vehicle and Tax Collector services. Do not use Downtown for an office-performed out-of-state VIN verification.
Northwest 5830 NW 34th Blvd, Gainesville, FL 32653 Standard services, title/overnight document destination and Class E road tests. Road skills tests are here only and require an appointment.
Southwest 3837 Windmeadows Blvd, Gainesville, FL 32608 Standard services and CDL hazardous-materials applications. CDL HazMat applications are here only.
Appointment rules

When is an Alachua County Tax Collector appointment required?

Appointments are recommended for faster service, but the rule depends on what you are doing. Do not assume every walk-in transaction and every test follows the same policy.

Appointment decision table
Service Appointment status Where / what to know
Standard license/ID renewal, replacement or common motorist service Recommended All three public branches provide standard driver-license services; an appointment can reduce uncertainty about wait time.
Class E knowledge exam Book an appointment The official driver-license page directs knowledge-exam customers to appointment scheduling.
Class E driving/road test Required Northwest Branch only, 5830 NW 34th Blvd.
Medical driving test Required by phone Call 352-374-5236 to schedule.
Nonimmigrant driver-license transaction Required Bring legal-presence and required address documents.
CDL HazMat application Plan ahead Southwest Branch only; TSA/background requirements can add processing time.
Appointment page does not load in some preview tools? The scheduler is a separate service platform. Start from the official Tax Collector homepage if a saved appointment URL changes.
Driver license / ID

What should you bring for a Florida driver license or ID?

Florida license and ID transactions can fail at the counter because the applicant brought copies, incomplete name-change records or only one address document. Build the document set before the appointment.

Identity: bring an accepted original or certified identity document.
Social Security: bring acceptable proof of the complete SSN when required.
Florida address: bring two accepted proofs of residential address.
Name changes: bring the original/certified document chain connecting the birth name to the current legal name.
Existing credential: surrender applicable Florida/out-of-state license or ID when required.
Under 18: parental consent and education/school requirements may apply.
Copies can cause a failed visit. The Tax Collector states that required identity documents must be original or certified; ordinary photocopies are not accepted.
2026 exam language rule: effective February 6, 2026, Florida driver-license knowledge and driving exams are administered in English only. Interpreters and translation devices are not allowed for those exams.

Useful fee snapshot

Estimated driver-license fees currently published by the office
Transaction Listed amount Before paying
Original / renewal license or learner license $54.25 Confirm the exact transaction and any added service.
Replacement / address change $31.25 Bring address proof if the transaction requires it.
ID card $31.25 Real ID document rules still apply.
Original / renewal CDL $81.25 CDL document/training requirements can differ.
HazMat application fee $91.00 Southwest Branch only; background/fingerprint process applies.
Road test

Do not go to the wrong branch for a driving test

Book Northwest Branch Class E road tests are appointment-only at 5830 NW 34th Blvd, Gainesville, FL 32653.
Bring the vehicle You must provide the vehicle used for the test.
Check registration and insurance The vehicle needs a valid tag/registration and proof of insurance.
Expect a vehicle inspection The vehicle must pass the office’s safety/vehicle inspection before the test proceeds.
Know the English-only rule Since February 6, 2026, the road test is administered in English; interpreters and translation devices are not allowed for the exam.
CDL road skills are different. The Alachua County Tax Collector does not provide CDL road-skills testing. Use an FLHSMV-certified CDL skills-testing site.

Vehicle registration and title tasks the Tax Collector handles

For a simple renewal, an office visit may be unnecessary. Title transfers, out-of-state vehicles, ownership changes and VIN problems are more likely to require document review.

Registration renewal

Renew online, at an eligible self-service kiosk, by mail or at a branch. Have the plate/PIN and required Florida insurance information ready.

Florida title transfer

The seller must correctly assign the title and purchase details. Ownership transfers generally must be completed within 30 days; the office lists a $20 late-transfer fee after that period.

Fast title

The office lists same-day fast title service for an additional $10 at locations offering title printing.

Out-of-state title

Bring ownership documents, Florida title application, VIN/odometer verification and Florida insurance when applicable. If the VIN is not already verified, the vehicle may need to be present.

Downtown VIN limitation: the official motor-vehicle page states that out-of-state VIN verification cannot be performed at the Downtown Alachua County location. Have the VIN verified on the proper form or choose an appropriate location.
Insurance cancellation warning: when cancelling insurance on a vehicle, surrender/cancel the Florida plate when required. The office warns that failing to do so can lead to driver-license/registration sanctions.
Suggested keyword answered

Do you pay sales tax at the DMV in Alachua County?

Yes, when sales tax is due as part of an applicable vehicle, vessel or mobile-home title transfer, the Alachua County Tax Collector can collect it as an agent for the Florida Department of Revenue. If you bought from a licensed Florida dealer, the dealer normally collects and remits the sales tax instead.

Florida state rate

6% on the taxable vehicle purchase amount under the office’s published guidance.

Alachua 2026 surtax

1.5% discretionary sales surtax. Florida DOR’s 2026 table confirms this current county rate.

Surtax cap base

The local discretionary surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of the applicable sale price, so the Alachua surtax portion is capped at $75 on that base.

Trade-in: the Tax Collector states that when a vehicle is traded in, sales tax is collected on the difference between the vehicle price and the trade-in amount, subject to applicable rules.
Do not confuse sales tax with registration/title fees. A title transfer can also include title, plate, registration, lien, service or initial-registration charges. Ask for the full transaction estimate when the paperwork is unusual.
Skip the counter

Can you renew a vehicle registration without a DMV appointment?

Yes. The Tax Collector lists online, mail and self-service kiosk options for many routine registration renewals. The kiosk is especially useful when you only need an eligible registration renewal and do not need a title or license transaction.

Publix in Jonesville
14130 W Newberry Rd
Newberry, FL 32669

Bring the Florida plate number and birth date or the PIN from the renewal notice, plus a credit/debit card.

Publix at NW 13th & NW 39th
3720 NW 13th St #9
Gainesville, FL 32609

Same kiosk basics: plate/birth date or renewal PIN and card payment. Additional kiosk fees apply.

Kiosk limits: the office says kiosks do not renew vessels, mobile homes, plate replacements or disabled parking placards.
Property tax

How to pay Alachua County property tax safely

This page is DMV/appointment-focused, but the same Tax Collector also collects Alachua County property taxes. For a payment, start with the live tax roll rather than relying on an address copied from a search result.

Open the official tax search Search using the owner name, property address or account details available in the portal.
Match the correct property Check owner, physical address, account/parcel and tax year before paying.
Check escrow status If a mortgage company should pay, confirm whether the payment has already posted before making a second payment.
Review discount/delinquent status The amount can depend on the month and whether the account is delinquent.
Save proof Keep the confirmation or payment evidence until the official account shows paid.
Tax Collector vs Property Appraiser: the Tax Collector collects the certified bill. The Property Appraiser handles assessed value, ownership/mailing records, exemptions and tangible-property assessment. A payment counter cannot simply change the assessed value.
Current 2026 timing

Property-tax dates that matter now

Regular annual Alachua County property-tax collection begins November 1, with the full amount due by March 31 and delinquency beginning April 1. Early-payment discounts are 4% in November, 3% in December, 2% in January and 1% in February.

As of August 25, 2026: the April 30 deadline to join the 2026 installment plan and the June 30 first installment deadline have passed. Existing 2026 installment-plan participants should pay attention to the next listed installment deadline, September 30, 2026.
September 30, 2026 — second installment Listed at 4.5% discount for active installment-plan participants.
By / around November 1 — regular annual bills Tax statements are normally mailed on or before November 1.
December 31 — third installment Listed at 3% discount for installment-plan participants.
March 31, 2027 — regular bill / fourth installment endpoint Full regular annual tax is due by March 31; the fourth installment has no discount.
Delinquent payment-method discrepancy: one official property-tax page lists personal checks among delinquent-payment methods, while the Tax Collector’s bill guide has warned that personal/business checks are not accepted for delinquent taxes. For a late account, call for the current payoff and accepted payment method before mailing a personal check.

Looking at DMV photos before visiting?

Public map listings can be useful for recognizing a building, parking area or entrance, but photos can become outdated. Use the official office-locations page for the address and service rules; use third-party photos only as arrival context.

Should you rely on DMV reviews for wait time?

Reviews are individual experiences, not a live queue. They can reveal recurring arrival/parking observations, but they cannot confirm today’s staffing, appointment availability, road-test capacity or document requirements. For a time-sensitive visit, book an appointment or call the official number.

Where are Alachua County Tax Collector jobs posted?

The current official-site crawl surfaces the office’s team, culture and Human Resources leadership, but did not surface a dedicated public job-vacancy page. No review/rating or JobPosting schema is added here. This guide does not publish verified first-party review data or a specific current job vacancy.
