Orange CT property tax due dates for 2026–27
The Town’s current Tax Collector notice covers taxes based on the October 1, 2025 Grand List. Bills were scheduled to be mailed in June 2026, and the Town states that it does not send a separate reminder bill for the January installment.
| Tax type | Installment | Due date | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real estate | First half | July 1, 2026 | The 2026 legal notice gave August 3, 2026 as the last day before delinquency for this installment. |
| Real estate | Second half | January 1, 2027 | The Town does not rebill for the second installment; retain the January portion of the original bill. |
| Personal property over $100 | 50/50 split | July 1, 2026 and January 1, 2027 | Both installments may be paid together if preferred. |
| Motor vehicle | Single payment | July 1, 2026 | Regular motor vehicle taxes are not split into January and July installments. |
| Supplemental motor vehicle | Single payment | January 1 | Typically applies to vehicles added to the supplemental list after the regular Grand List date. |
Online, card and e-check payment fees
Orange accepts several electronic payment methods, but the payment vendor charges a convenience fee. The Town states that it does not share in convenience-fee revenue.
2.5% convenience fee for supported credit-card payments.
1.5% convenience fee for supported debit-card payments.
$1.50 flat fee for the Town’s online electronic-check option.
Fee schedules can change. Review the amount shown by the official payment system before submitting the transaction.
Telephone card payment
The Town also publishes an Interactive Voice Response payment number at 203-902-0387. Convenience fees apply to telephone card transactions.
Pay in person, by mail or through the office mail slot
Pay at Orange Town Hall during published window-payment hours. Bring the payment coupon or duplicate bill so the payment can be posted to the correct account.
Mail a check or money order with the payment coupon to the Tax Collector at 617 Orange Center Road, Orange, CT 06477. Do not mail cash.
The Town lists non-window check payments through the office mail slot during general-service hours and states that third-party checks are not accepted for this option.
If you need a mailed receipt
Include the full tax bill and a self-addressed stamped envelope with a mailed payment when you need the Tax Collector to return a receipt.
Do not rely on a bank’s mailing date
When a payment is sent through an online banking bill-pay service, the date you instructed your bank to send it is not necessarily the legal payment date. Orange warns that third-party bill-pay envelopes may not carry an acceptable USPS postmark and can therefore be posted according to the date received.
What happens when an Orange tax bill becomes delinquent?
Connecticut municipal tax law generally applies interest at 1.5% per month or fraction of a month, equal to 18% annually, once a payment becomes delinquent. Orange’s current notice also states a $2 minimum interest charge per installment.
For the first 2026 installment, the Town stated that payments received after August 3, 2026 were delinquent and interest was calculated back to the July 1 due date. This is why paying only one day after the grace period can produce more than one month’s interest.
Can the Tax Collector waive interest?
The Tax Collector generally cannot excuse statutory interest simply because a bill was lost, forgotten or paid late. Connecticut law provides a limited process when both the assessor and tax collector determine that the delinquency resulted entirely from a municipal error and the required municipal approval is obtained.
Returned checks
Orange says it does not simply redeposit a returned check. A replacement payment is required, and an original postmark does not preserve timeliness if the original payment was dishonored.
Orange motor vehicle tax and DMV hold clearance
A delinquent Connecticut motor vehicle tax can prevent registration renewal until the municipal tax hold is electronically cleared. Connecticut DMV no longer relies on paper tax releases; the municipality sends clearance electronically.
Sold the car, moved or changed registration?
Those situations usually involve the Assessor’s Office, not a discretionary adjustment by the Tax Collector. The Town says written documentation about the vehicle and plate disposition may be needed before the Assessor can determine whether a tax credit or correction applies.
Which Orange office should fix your problem?
The Tax Collector bills and collects taxes. The Assessor determines taxable property, assessments and many credits or corrections. Contacting the correct office first can prevent an unnecessary trip or payment delay.
| Question or problem | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| How much do I currently owe? | Tax Collector | The collector maintains billing, payment and delinquency information. |
| Did my payment post? | Tax Collector | The office can review the payment record and current balance. |
| Why is my assessment this amount? | Assessor | The Assessor is responsible for listing and valuing taxable property. |
| I sold or disposed of my vehicle. | Assessor | The Assessor determines whether documentation supports an adjustment or credit. |
| I moved and the address is wrong. | Assessor / DMV as applicable | Address and vehicle-record changes can depend on the source record used for assessment. |
| I need to pay a delinquent bill. | Tax Collector | The collector calculates the amount due with statutory interest and applicable charges. |
Orange’s current mill rate and what it means
The Town’s Tax Collector page states that the mill rate for the 2025 Grand List / 2026–27 tax year is 27.40 mills. For real estate and business personal property, the Town describes the bill calculation as assessed value multiplied by 0.0274.
Questions about why property has a particular assessed value should go to the Assessor. Questions about the balance due, payment history, interest or collection belong with the Tax Collector.
Senior, disabled, veteran and other property-tax relief
Orange’s Assessor administers local and state benefit programs rather than the Tax Collector deciding eligibility at the payment window. The Town identifies programs for elderly or disabled homeowners, veterans and legally blind residents.
The Town’s current FAQ says its local Senior Tax Stabilization Program generally requires at least ten consecutive years of Orange residency, age 65 or older and/or total disability with proof, plus the program’s income limit. It also lists Connecticut’s Circuit Breaker relief program for qualifying elderly or totally disabled homeowners.
Common Orange tax-payment problems and what to do
| Problem | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| I never received my tax bill | Search the official online account before the deadline. | Call 203-891-4736 if you cannot locate the bill. Non-receipt does not remove the tax or late interest. |
| My online payment is not showing yet | Review your confirmation and allow for overnight processing. | Contact the Tax Collector before submitting a duplicate payment. |
| I paid the wrong online account | Keep the transaction details and account information used. | Contact the Tax Collector promptly rather than attempting an unsupported reversal yourself. |
| My business ACH payment failed | Routing/account details, funds and bank vendor-blocking settings. | Ask your finance department whether Catalis merchant 0011112975 must be authorized. |
| I sold my vehicle but still received a bill | Vehicle disposition, registration and plate records. | Contact the Assessor and be prepared to provide supporting documentation. |
| I need DMV clearance immediately | Whether all delinquent motor vehicle taxes in your name are paid. | Call the Tax Collector before visiting to confirm the current expedited-clearance procedure and staff availability. |
