Newark, New Jersey · Property tax, account search and assessment guide
Find the Right Account Before You Pay
Newark uses its own City Online Inquiry & Payment system—not the familiar WIPP screen used by many New Jersey municipalities. The correct tool depends on whether you need a live tax balance, an annual assessment record, a block-and-lot map or an assessment correction.
This guide explains the search fields, payment checks, Tax Collector phone routes, Finance hours, Assessor contact, address lookup, quarterly deadlines, deductions, appeals and delinquent-account steps.
Important correction for “Newark WIPP” searches:
Newark does not use the standard Edmunds WIPP interface for its public tax workflow. The city-authorized system is titled City of Newark Online Inquiry & Payment. Confirm that the page is on the City’s taxes.ci.newark.nj.us domain before entering payment information.

Tax Lien Warning
⛔ Texas Attorney Fee Warning: After July 1, delinquent property taxes are referred to a collection attorney. An additional 15–20% attorney fee is added on top of your penalty and interest. On a $5,000 tax bill, this adds $750–$1,000 instantly. Pay before July 1 to avoid this.

Portal identification
Is There a Newark NJ Tax Collector WIPP Portal?
Many New Jersey municipalities use an Edmunds WIPP page, so taxpayers naturally search “Newark WIPP.” Newark’s public tax system is different. The City Payment Center routes property-tax users to Newark’s own Online Inquiry & Payment portal.
Correct Newark system
City of Newark Online Inquiry & Payment
Account number
Block
Lot
Qualifier
Owner name
Property location
Do not use
An East Newark municipal portal
A Newark, Delaware or California result
An unrelated NJ state-tax payment page
A WIPP page for another municipality
A sponsored directory asking for card information
Safest route:
Start from NewarkNJ.gov’s Payment Center, select Taxes, and confirm that the next page is titled City of Newark Online Inquiry & Payment.
Three Different Newark Property Searches—and When to Use Each
Choose the search that matches the question
Search
Best for
Address-search method
Important limitation
Newark Online Inquiry & Payment
Live municipal tax account, quarter, billed amount, payment and interest details
Enter a street address or distinctive street fragment in Location
It is a collection account, not a property survey or appeal decision.
NJ Property Explorer
Owner, parcel location, block/lot, annual land/building value, class and prior-year taxes
Search by address and select Newark municipality
The transparency file is an annual January snapshot; later ownership changes may be missing.
City of Newark Tax Maps PDF
Connecting a block to a City tax-map sheet
First obtain block/lot from the portal or Property Explorer
The PDF is an index—not a live owner/value database or boundary survey.
Best address-search workflow
Normalize the street
Start with the street number and distinctive street name. If the full address fails, try the street name without apartment, floor or punctuation.
Use Newark’s Location field
Search the live city portal when you need a tax bill, balance, payment record or open quarter.
Compare every possible result
Match property location, owner, account, block, lot and qualifier. Do not choose solely by a common surname.
Use Property Explorer for the annual assessment snapshot
Select Newark and compare owner, class, assessed land/building values and block/lot.
Call the Assessor for a correction
A search result does not itself change ownership, value, mortgage code or parcel data.
Wrong “property search” tool:
The New Jersey DCA property search is mainly a building/property-registration system. It is not the Newark municipal tax-balance or assessment-payment record.
Use all three when a qualifier is present; similar addresses can have multiple lots.
Owner
Owner name carried in the city record
A recent buyer should also match location and B/L/Q because ownership updates can lag.
Property location
Taxed parcel’s physical location
Do not confuse it with the bill’s mailing address.
Principal and interest
Tax/charge balance plus accrued interest as calculated for the record
Use a current interest date; an old screenshot is not a payoff.
Deductions
Applicable deduction information carried on the account
Contact the Assessor when an approved deduction appears missing.
Last payment date
Most recent posted transaction
Compare the date, amount, payer/reference and bank record before paying again.
Year / Quarter / Due date
The billed period associated with each line
Review older quarters, transfers, adjustments and open balances—not only the newest line.
Payment description
Can identify homeowner, mortgage, e-check, web card, transfer, abatement or adjustment activity
A transaction description is not proof that every quarter or municipal charge is satisfied.
Multiple parcels at one address:
Condominiums, combined properties, utility parcels or multi-lot ownership can produce several results. Verify account and B/L/Q before opening View/Pay.
Official payment workflow
How to Pay Newark Property Taxes Online Safely
Start from the City Payment Center
Choose the Taxes category instead of water, parking or another municipal obligation.
Search with the strongest identifier
Account number or B/L/Q is usually more precise than owner name. Use Location when searching by address.
Open the correct View/Pay record
Match account, owner, location, block, lot and qualifier.
Review every open period
Check the year, quarter, transaction description, billed amount, paid amount, open balance, interest and prior-year activity.
Understand partial-payment ordering
Newark applies a partial payment to the oldest payment due. A payment intended for the newest quarter may first reduce an older quarter and interest.
Select the payment method deliberately
The City Payment Center says most payments may use credit card, debit card or electronic check. Review the actual checkout fee and final total.
Confirm the transaction
Recheck property, amount, bank/card details and payment date before authorizing.
Save proof and verify posting
Keep the confirmation, receipt, account, B/L/Q, amount and bank record until the portal shows the intended payment.
No fixed online fee published on the current City Payment Center:
Do not label Newark e-check as free or quote a card percentage unless the live checkout displays it. The fee shown immediately before authorization controls.
Online confirmation exists
Verify that it identifies the correct account and was not later rejected, reversed or returned.
Bank account was debited
Save the transaction trace, debit date and amount. A bank debit alone does not show which parcel received the payment.
Mortgage company should have paid
Ask the servicer for its payment date, amount, account/B/L/Q and check or electronic reference.
Partial payment posted to an older quarter
This follows Newark’s oldest-payment-first rule. Request a complete account explanation before sending another amount.
Owner name is outdated
Compare location and B/L/Q, then contact the Assessor about ownership or mortgage-code updates.
Account has tax-sale or returned-payment activity
Call for a current payoff and accepted payment method rather than using an old portal amount.
Useful call format
“I need help with Newark tax account [number], block [number], lot [number], qualifier [if any], at [property address]. A payment of [$] was submitted on [date] by [method]. My confirmation/check/reference is [number]. Please confirm where it posted and the complete amount now due.”

Tax Collector email answer:
The current official Finance page and tax portal do not publish one general Revenue Collections email. Use a listed tax phone number. Never email a full bank account, card number, Social Security number or unredacted identity document.
Call before an in-person visit.
Finance lists 47-63 Green Street, while City notices also refer to tax-payment service at City Hall. Ask which counter handles your exact payment, assessment, tax-sale, special-tax or record request.
Quarterly calendar
Newark Property-Tax Due Dates, Grace Period and Interest
First quarterPayment is due February 1.
Second quarterPayment is due May 1.
Third quarterPayment is due August 1.
Fourth quarterPayment is due November 1.
Grace period
Newark’s FAQ describes a 10-day grace period. A quarter-specific official extension or bill notice controls when issued.
Late interest
The FAQ lists 8% on the first $1,500 and 18% on the remaining balance after the applicable due date and grace-period rules.
Partial payments
Applied toward the oldest payment due, including the relevant principal and interest.
Do not use a generic penalty calculator.
Interest depends on the live Newark account, payment date, open quarters, municipal charges, returned payments and tax-sale status. Use the city portal and request a dated payoff when the account is late.
Call before visiting to confirm location and document requirements.
Value and classification
Assessed land/building value, property class and taxability questions.
Ownership and mortgage code
Record updates after deed or lender changes.
Block, lot and qualifier
Parcel identifiers, map records and property-record corrections.
Mergers and subdivisions
Assessment record work for changed parcel configurations.
Deductions and exemptions
Veteran, senior, disabled and 100% disabled-veteran applications.
Appeal preparation
Property card, assessment explanation and record review before filing.
Email safety:
Include property address, block, lot, qualifier and a concise question. Do not email bank/card information or unnecessary Social Security and identity documents. Ask for a secure or in-person document route when proof is required.
The City-linked PDF is a one-page index that connects Newark tax blocks with numbered map sheets. It is useful after you already know the block and lot; it is not the fastest starting point for an address search.
Find the block and lot first
Use the Newark tax portal or NJ Property Explorer.
Locate the block in the PDF index
The table identifies the relevant sheet number for groups of blocks.
Use the sheet reference for record research
Give the Assessor the block, lot, qualifier and sheet when asking a map question.
Do not treat the index as a survey
Boundary, easement, deed and construction decisions require the appropriate recorded documents or professional survey.
Date caution:
The City currently links this map index, but the document title block and revision notes include older dates. Confirm any current parcel change, merger, subdivision or boundary issue with the Assessor.
How to Prepare a Newark Property-Tax Assessment Appeal
An assessment appeal challenges the property’s assessed value or assessment treatment. It does not challenge the tax rate, erase a collection balance or automatically pause interest and payment duties.
Review the property record
Check owner, class, land/building values, property characteristics, B/L/Q and any added or omitted assessment.
Ask the Assessor for an explanation
Resolve factual errors when possible before filing.
Gather market-value evidence
Use relevant comparable sales, condition evidence, photographs and other support—not merely the dollar amount of another tax bill.
Use the correct form
Regular county appeals use Form A-1 and comparable-sale information. Added/omitted assessments use Form AA-1.
Meet the received-by deadline
New Jersey’s normal deadline is April 1; May 1 applies where a municipal revaluation or reassessment has occurred. The notice for the applicable year controls.
Continue protecting the tax account
Ask Revenue Collections what must be paid while the appeal is pending.
2026 deadline status:
The regular 2026 Newark appeal deadline has passed. Do not submit an ordinary appeal assuming it will be timely. Ask about the next tax-year filing window or the separate deadline for a newly issued added/omitted assessment.

State property-tax relief with program-specific eligibility and payment schedules
New Jersey Property Tax Relief application—not the Newark payment portal
Current 2026 application deadline:
New Jersey lists November 2, 2026 for the 2025 property-tax-relief application. Seniors and specified Social Security/Railroad Retirement disability recipients must file the combined PAS-1 themselves; many eligible under-65 non-disability applicants may receive an auto-file confirmation in August 2026.
Do not subtract a benefit yourself.
Continue using the billed Newark balance until the municipal account or official state benefit notice reflects the approved relief.
New Owner, Escrow or Mailing Record Does Not Match?
Recent deed transfer
The owner name in an annual state snapshot or municipal record may lag. Match property location and B/L/Q, then ask the Assessor about the update.
Mortgage company pays taxes
Confirm the lender’s tax parcel/account, disbursement date, amount and payment reference before paying personally.
Mortgage code is wrong
Newark Finance identifies mortgage-code changes as an Assessments record function.
Bill mailed to an old address
Do not rely only on postal forwarding. Ask the Assessor for the current ownership/mailing-record process.
Property was merged or subdivided
Confirm every resulting B/L/Q and open tax account before paying a pre-change parcel.
Closing adjustment differs from the city account
Compare the settlement statement with the live portal, then contact the closing professional and city separately.
Collection and ownership are separate:
Paying a tax balance does not update the deed, owner, mailing address, parcel configuration or mortgage code.
Late taxes and lien risk
Newark Tax Sale, Older Quarters and Redemption Help
Standard tax sale
Newark explains that prior-year taxes or other municipal charges remaining unpaid can be offered for sale, causing a tax lien certificate to be filed. A property can face foreclosure if the lien is not redeemed in time.
Accelerated tax sale
The City FAQ says current-year taxes or other municipal charges remaining due after the statutory November 10 date may be included in accelerated enforcement.
Search the full account
Review every year, quarter, municipal charge, interest line, payment and adjustment.
Request a payoff through a specific date
Interest and enforcement status can make an old screenshot inaccurate.
Ask whether a lien certificate has been sold
The correct redemption route and acceptable funds may differ after sale.
Confirm the payment instrument
Do not assume ordinary online checkout is available for redemption, returned checks or a tax-sale-stage account.
Keep proof until the account and lien status clear
Save the payoff, payment receipt, posting date and any release or redemption confirmation.
No generic payoff estimate:
The Newark account may contain multiple quarters, 8% and 18% interest tiers, other municipal charges, returned-payment activity and tax-sale costs. Call Revenue Collections for the live amount and status.

The regular 2026 Newark deadline has passed, so verify the next filing window or an added/omitted assessment deadline.
