Memphis Tax Collector: Pay City Taxes, Find the Office & Check Your Bill
Memphis does not use a separately branded elected “City Tax Collector” office. City property taxes are billed and collected through the City of Memphis Treasury Division, while the Shelby County Trustee handles separate Shelby County property taxes.
Use this page to identify the correct office, look up a Memphis city tax bill, compare payment methods, confirm the 2026 deadline, find City Hall hours and understand when you need the Assessor, Trustee or Treasury instead.

Memphis property tax due date, rate and late interest
The official City tax system lists the 2026 City of Memphis property-tax rate as $2.58081 per $100 of assessed value. The published 2026 city property-tax due date is August 31, 2026.
| Item | 2026 information | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| City tax rate | $2.58081 per $100 assessed value | The tax rate is applied to the taxable assessed value, not simply the property’s market value. |
| Payment deadline | August 31, 2026 | Pay by the City deadline to avoid delinquent interest. |
| Interest begins | September 1, 2026 | The City states that unpaid tax begins accruing interest after the August 31 deadline. |
| Monthly interest | 1.5% of unpaid tax per month | An unpaid balance becomes progressively more expensive while it remains delinquent. |
Memphis property assessments used for locally assessed property originate with the Shelby County Assessor. The Memphis City Council sets the City tax rate. Treasury then bills and collects the resulting City tax.

Administrative Treasury office
The City also publishes the Deputy CFO–Treasurer administrative address as 125 N. Main St., Room 301, Memphis, TN 38103. For an ordinary walk-in property-tax payment, however, the City specifically directs taxpayers to the Suite 375 payment counter.
City of Memphis tax vs. Shelby County property tax
A common source of confusion is that Memphis residents are inside Shelby County but the City of Memphis and Shelby County maintain separate property-tax functions. A City Treasury payment does not replace a separate county obligation handled by the Shelby County Trustee.
Shelby County Trustee main office
The Shelby County Trustee’s main office is at 157 Poplar Avenue, 2nd Floor, Memphis, TN 38103. The Trustee publishes regular main-office hours of 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and a main phone number of 901-222-0200.
Memphis Tax Relief, Tax Freeze and quarterly payments
Memphis publishes assistance programs for qualifying homeowners, including Tax Relief, Tax Freeze and a quarterly payment option. These programs have different eligibility rules, so do not assume eligibility for one automatically means eligibility for another.
The City describes relief for qualifying elderly homeowners, homeowners who are totally and permanently disabled, qualifying disabled veterans and certain surviving spouses, subject to the applicable program requirements.
The freeze program is aimed at qualifying homeowners age 65 or older who satisfy annual income and other requirements. Eligibility must be checked against the current program year.
For eligible participants, the City program divides the annual City tax into four installments rather than requiring one annual payment.
City quarterly-payment dates
The City of Memphis schedule published for the quarterly program uses installments due August 31, November 30, February 28 and May 31.
Eligibility limits and application documents can change by tax year. Check the current City brochure or call Treasury rather than relying on an older application form saved from a previous year.
What to do when a Memphis property-tax record is wrong
| Problem | Start here | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Mailing address is wrong | Shelby County Assessor, then City Treasury as required | The City advises taxpayers to correct assessment-roll information with the Assessor and follow Treasury instructions for the City bill. |
| Owner name is wrong | Shelby County Assessor or Register | Ownership evidence may be required before the underlying record can be corrected. |
| Appraisal seems too high | Shelby County Assessor / Board of Equalization | Treasury collects the tax but does not set the property appraisal. |
| Online balance may be outdated | City Treasury | For a final payoff or real-estate closing, verify directly with Treasury. |
| Mortgage company should have paid | Mortgage servicer, then Treasury | The City advises taxpayers receiving an unexpected delinquent notice to contact the mortgage company promptly. |
| Older unpaid taxes exist | City Treasury | Payments may be applied to older eligible tax years first under applicable rules. |
Partial payments
The City states that partial payments can be accepted toward outstanding City property taxes. A partial payment does not stop interest on the unpaid balance, so ask Treasury how a payment will be applied before relying on it as a delinquency solution.
Delinquent property taxes
City real-estate and state-assessed property taxes can be referred for delinquent collection after they have remained delinquent for the period described by the City. If you already have a seriously overdue balance, contact Treasury for the current payoff and collection status rather than using only an older printed bill.
Bankruptcy
If City property taxes are included in an active bankruptcy matter, ordinary payment handling may differ. The City directs taxpayers with bankruptcy-related tax concerns to Treasury. Do not make assumptions about which tax year can be paid without confirming the account status.
