1
Pay or search a tax bill

Use the official New Haven MyTaxBill portal for real estate, special service district, personal property, motor vehicle and supplemental motor vehicle bills.

2
Need DMV release

Payment method and posting time matter. Personal checks can create a hold, and DMV paper releases are no longer accepted.

3
Bill or vehicle value looks wrong

Start with the Assessor for value, exemption, garaging, sold-vehicle, moved-vehicle or assessment database questions.

Official payment route

How to pay City of New Haven taxes online

Open the city-linked portalUse the official City of New Haven MyTaxBill page, not a directory, ad result, county page or “New Haven County” payment page.
Choose one search routeSearch by name, property location, bill number, unique ID, list number, account ID or vehicle link details if shown on the bill.
Use fewer fields firstFor addresses, avoid extra suffix wording such as Street, Court or Lane if the search fails. For names, try fewer words before adding initials.
Confirm the recordMatch taxpayer, address or vehicle details, Grand List year, bill type, installment, amount due and current payment status.
Choose the payment methodOnline payment is useful for ordinary bills. For DMV release or seized vehicle issues, check the rules before paying online.
Save proofKeep confirmation number, receipt, payment date, bill number, amount and bank/card record for your own records.
New Haven local note: the city says it normally sends one real estate tax bill, typically in June. Do not wait for a second paper mailing if your second installment is due in January.

2026 city notice

New Haven tax due dates, grace period, delinquent date and interest

2025 Grand List first installment

The City says the first installment of real estate, Special Service District, personal property and motor vehicle tax is due July 1, 2026.

Payable by August 3, 2026

The 2026 notice says payment is due on or before August 3, 2026 for that first installment.

Delinquent August 4, 2026

Unpaid taxes are delinquent as of August 4, 2026, with interest charged from July 1, 2026.

Second installment

The FAQ explains that the second installment is due January 1 with a similar grace-period structure.

Small bills

Bills of $100 or less are due in a single installment for real estate, personal property and motor vehicle.

Interest

Past-due payments are subject to 1.5% per month from the due date. Interest cannot be waived by the Tax Collector.

No-bill warning: failure to receive a bill does not remove tax or interest responsibility. Call 203-946-8054 and request a copy if you believe a bill is missing.
DMV release

New Haven motor vehicle tax and DMV release rules

If you owe delinquent motor vehicle tax, Connecticut DMV registration activity can be blocked until the tax issue is cleared electronically.

Confirm every vehicle balanceNew Haven says all outstanding vehicle taxes associated with your name and/or VIN or plate must be paid in full before release.
Know that paper releases are not acceptedThe City says DMV no longer accepts paper tax releases, so the release must move electronically.
Choose payment method based on urgencyCash, money order and certified bank check payments are posted into the release process. Personal checks have a five-business-day hold unless proof is provided earlier.
Watch the online cutoffOnline payments made before 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday are uploaded and posted the next business day, excluding holidays. Later or weekend payments can take longer.
Allow DMV update timeNew Haven says the DMV file is updated nightly during the work week after the city sends the release file.
Real-world timing: if your registration deadline is close, call the Tax Collector before paying online. A cheap or convenient payment method can still be the wrong method when you need release fast.
Booted or seized vehicle

What to do if your vehicle was booted or seized for New Haven taxes

A seized or booted vehicle is not a normal online-payment problem. The City directs taxpayers to the Tax Collector office at 165 Church Street during office hours to resolve outstanding taxes and other city obligations.

Accepted redemption payment

The City says payment must be cash, money order, certified check or cashier’s check, made payable to “Tax Collector, City of New Haven.” Credit cards are not accepted for this route.

Vehicle Release form

You must have the Vehicle Release form issued by the Tax Collector. The City says the form is not valid without the raised seal of the Tax Collector.

Misuse of plates

If plates are removed for misuse, only the current title owner can redeem the vehicle. If unregistered, the vehicle must be towed from the impound yard.

Personal property inside car

The City allows property-release requests for items like prescription glasses, medication, wallet or baby car seat, but not vehicle parts such as tires, radios or batteries.

Vehicle bill correction

Sold, moved, totaled or out-of-state vehicle? Do not ignore the New Haven tax bill

The DMV does not automatically tell the City when plates are returned or when a vehicle is disposed of. New Haven says it is the taxpayer’s responsibility to provide required documentation within the statutory time limit.

Possible proof

Bill of sale, signed title copy, probate transfer letter, out-of-state registration, lease termination, salvage/junk receipt, total-loss letter, plate return receipt or repossession proof.

Required vehicle details

Documents should show year, make, model and VIN. The vehicle registration must be cancelled or expired for many credit requests.

Moved in Connecticut

Proof may include utility, bank, mortgage, lease, insurance, medical or other qualifying documents showing residence in another Connecticut town.

Out-of-state parking permit issue: New Haven says vehicles not registered in Connecticut but primarily located in Connecticut must be declared as personal property annually by November 1. If you need a residential parking permit with an out-of-state vehicle, check Assessor requirements first.
New owner checklist

New Haven homebuyer tax checklist

New Haven explains that municipal taxes are paid in advance: the fiscal year runs July 1 through June 30, with the first payment due July 1 and the second due January 1.

Ask your closing attorney which installment was adjusted at closing.
Search the current bill online using property location or bill number.
Do not assume escrow paid because taxes were mentioned on the closing statement.
Check January second-installment status even though only one annual bill may have been mailed.
Save the closing disclosure and any lender/escrow tax-payment proof.
Call the Tax Collector before the grace period ends if the online record looks unpaid.
Proof and records

How to get New Haven tax receipts, payment history and income-tax records

Online record search

The City Tax Forms page directs taxpayers needing tax-paid information for federal or state income tax purposes to the Pay Taxes Online site.

Receipt retention

The Tax Collector FAQ advises taxpayers to save receipts for 15 years because municipal taxes are collectible for that length of time.

Payment mismatch

Use the confirmation number, bill number, payment date, amount and bank/card proof when contacting the office.
