Payment methods

How to Pay West Orange Property Taxes

West Orange provides online, in-person and drop-box routes. Choose the method that gives enough time for the payment to be received before the applicable grace-period deadline.

1 Online

Use the Township’s official payment page and follow its link to the current tax and sewer payment portal.

2 In person

The office accepts cash, check or money order. The Township says credit and debit cards are not accepted at the office counter.

3 Drop box

A secure drop box is located at the rear of Town Hall and is labeled “Tax Payments & Correspondence.” Use check or money order only; do not leave cash.

Steps to search and pay online

Open the official West Orange payment route Use the Township payment page rather than an advertisement or unrelated third-party tax site.
Find the correct property The linked municipal lookup allows searches using property identifiers, owner name or street address. Check that the result matches the property you intend to pay.
Review the balance and quarter Confirm the tax year, installment and outstanding amount before choosing a payment method.
Check the displayed processing fee Review the live portal’s fee disclosure before authorizing payment because published fee information is not fully consistent across current Township and portal pages.
Save confirmation Keep the receipt or confirmation number and allow for portal processing before assuming the account has updated.
Check or money order: The Township directs taxpayers to make checks and money orders payable to The Township of West Orange. Do not postdate the check.
Quarterly schedule

West Orange Property Tax Due Dates

Published quarterly property tax schedule
Quarter Due date Grace-period planning
Quarter 1 February 1 West Orange provides a 10-day grace period.
Quarter 2 May 1 Payment must be received within the applicable grace period.
Quarter 3 August 1 Check the Township calendar if the deadline falls near a weekend or holiday.
Quarter 4 November 1 Do not rely on mailing a payment on the final grace-period day.
Postmark does not control the deadline: West Orange states that New Jersey does not permit the postmark to determine timely payment for this purpose. The payment must be received by the office within the grace period.

If the 10th day falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the Township says the grace period runs through the next business day. For a specific quarter, confirm the Township calendar or call the office because operational closures can affect when the office is available.

Verify before paying

Online Payment Fees: Check the Live Portal

West Orange’s public Tax Payments page currently states that the payment processor charges $1.95 for an e-check and 2.95% for credit/debit card transactions.

The municipality-linked property-tax portal currently displays different information: it shows $0.00 for ACH payments and a 2.95% credit-card fee with a $1.50 minimum. Because the two current official routes do not match, treat the amount displayed on the live payment screen as the fee to verify before you submit the transaction.

Why this matters: Processing-fee information can change when a municipality changes payment vendors or portal configurations. Do not assume an older saved fee applies to a new transaction.
Property account search

How to Look Up a West Orange Tax Account

The municipality-linked lookup can be used to search West Orange property tax records by block and lot, owner name or street address. Use enough identifying information to make sure you have the correct parcel before reviewing a balance or paying.

Block and lot: Useful when you have a tax bill, deed or property-record reference.
Owner name: The portal requires enough characters to return a useful match.
Street address: Check the resulting owner and parcel information before continuing.
Payment status: The linked portal warns that a payment may take several business days to appear.
Assessment issue instead of payment issue? The Tax Collector handles billing and collection. Questions about assessed value or property assessment belong with the West Orange Tax Assessor rather than the payment office.
Delinquency

Late Property Tax Interest & Year-End Penalty

West Orange publishes an interest rate of 8% on delinquency up to $1,500 and 18% on amounts over $1,500 until taxes are brought current. The Township also states that a 6% penalty applies at year-end to delinquency over $10,000 if it remains unpaid by December 31.

Do not calculate a payoff from this page alone. Interest depends on the specific account and payment date. Contact the Tax Collector or use the official account system for the amount required to bring a delinquent account current.

If a payment seems missing

Online payment just submitted? The linked portal says account updates can take several business days. Keep your confirmation while the payment is processing.
Grace period is ending? Do not assume a mailed payment is timely based on postmark. Contact the office if receipt timing is uncertain.
Wrong amount appears? Verify the parcel, quarter and tax year first, then contact the Tax Collector with the account details.
Assessment itself is disputed? A payment-office inquiry does not change assessed value. Contact the Tax Assessor or the appropriate assessment-review authority.
Separate municipal charge

West Orange Sewer Bills

West Orange publishes an annual sewer charge that is billed directly to property owners. The Township specifically notes that mortgage companies do not pay these sewer bills.

If your mortgage company escrows property taxes: Do not assume that arrangement also covers the West Orange sewer charge. Review the sewer bill separately and confirm its payment status.
Serious delinquency

West Orange Tax Sale & Municipal Liens

New Jersey municipalities are required to conduct tax sales for qualifying unpaid municipal charges. West Orange states that unpaid prior-year taxes, sewer charges and other municipal charges may become eligible for its annual tax sale.

If a property is listed for tax sale, the Township sends a notice showing the amount needed to avoid the sale. West Orange says payments made to avoid tax sale must be paid in full using certified funds, and online payments are no longer accepted after the property has been placed on the tax-sale list.

A tax sale does not mean the municipality immediately sells the house. The Township explains that the sale creates a lien against the property. A separate redemption and, potentially, foreclosure process applies afterward.

If a lien has already been placed on the property, contact the West Orange Tax Collector at 973-325-4075 or taxcollector@westorange.org for the current redemption procedure and payoff requirements.
