Tax Lien Warning

⛔ Texas Attorney Fee Warning: After July 1, delinquent property taxes are referred to a collection attorney. An additional 15–20% attorney fee is added on top of your penalty and interest. On a $5,000 tax bill, this adds $750–$1,000 instantly. Pay before July 1 to avoid this.

How to search and pay a Danbury CT tax bill online

The City links to MyTaxBill for real-estate, personal-property, motor-vehicle and supplemental motor-vehicle tax accounts. Search first, verify the record, and only then continue to payment.

Open the City-linked Danbury tax portalConfirm the page says “City of Danbury.” Do not use a Danbury, New Hampshire site or a generic payment page from a search ad.
Use the strongest identifier you haveBill number, account number or link number is best when printed on the bill. Owner name or property location works when the bill is unavailable.
Format name and address searches simplyFor a person, enter last name followed by first initial, with no punctuation. For property location, omit suffixes such as Street, Court or Lane.
Check the bill typeThe portal labels 01 Real Estate, 02 Personal Property, 03 Motor Vehicle, 04 Motor Vehicle Supplemental and 07 Real Estate District.
Compare tax year, property or vehicle and amountDo not assume every result under one owner name belongs to the bill you intend to pay. This is especially important for households with several vehicles.
Review the processor fee at checkoutDanbury’s current main payment page lists a 2.5% card/app fee with a $1.95 minimum and a $0.95 e-check fee. See the fee-conflict warning below before authorizing payment.
Save the email confirmationKeep the confirmation, payment amount, bill year and bank/card record until the account posts and any DMV hold is cleared.

Municipal-record rule: The portal states that Danbury’s maintained municipal database controls if the website display conflicts with the City’s official record. A website error does not reduce the underlying tax liability.

Danbury online tax payment fees: check the live checkout

Main City payment page

Credit/debit cards and apps: 2.5%, with a $1.95 minimum. E-check: $0.95.

Tax Collector FAQ

The FAQ still displays 2.95% for property-tax card payments and $0.95 for e-check, plus a $20 NSF charge for rejected payments.

Official-page conflict: Two current City pages show different property-tax card percentages. Do not calculate the card fee from this guide. The amount displayed by the authorized checkout before you submit payment should be verified, and you can call 203-797-4541 if the fee is unclear.
Lower-cost electronic option: Both City sources agree on a $0.95 e-check fee, making e-check the lower listed electronic fee in the published guidance.

Motor vehicle & DMV

Danbury DMV clearance: do not assume an online payment clears instantly

For DMV clearance, the City says all vehicles registered under your name must be paid in full. Online tax payments may take 4–6 business days before clearance is reflected.

Search every motor-vehicle account under your nameUse name search or the MV/MS link fields so an older or supplemental bill is not missed.
Check all vehicles, not only the one you are registeringThe City’s DMV guidance says all vehicles in your name must be fully paid.
If clearance is urgent, call before choosing online paymentAn online confirmation does not mean the DMV record updates the same day.
For delinquent motor-vehicle taxes, prepare the accepted fundsDanbury says delinquent motor-vehicle taxes must be paid by cash, money order or certified bank check under City Ordinance Sec. 18-24.
Keep the receiptAsk how clearance will be transmitted and what proof you should retain before going to DMV.
No same-day promise: The published pages do not guarantee immediate DMV release after an in-person payment. Call 203-797-4541 with the account before traveling if timing is critical.
Late and collection accounts

Late tax interest, minimum charge and TaxServ letters

Interest rate

18% per year, or 1.5% per month, once a bill becomes delinquent.

When interest starts

Interest accrues from the original due date, not merely from the day after the last day to pay.

Minimum interest

The City’s FAQ lists a $2 minimum interest charge.

Ask for the payoff instead of using a generic calculator. The City applies statutory monthly interest rules, so a do-it-yourself daily estimate can be wrong. Use the portal or call the Tax Collector for the amount due through the date you plan to pay.

If you receive a TaxServ collection letter

Danbury says TaxServ Capital Services is contracted to collect delinquent motor-vehicle taxes and other non-tax receivables. The current City TaxServ page lists 860-724-9100 for TaxServ contact.

Verify the account/name before paying
Use the current City-linked TaxServ information
Keep the letter and payment proof
For assessment corrections, contact the Assessor rather than the collector
City of Danbury tax assessor database

Property records and the Danbury Assessor database are not the tax-payment portal

Danbury uses the eQuality CAMA property-record database for assessment information. The City says it is updated nightly and contains the latest valuations from the 2022 revaluation. The Assessor values property; the Tax Collector collects the resulting bill.

How to search the Assessor database without getting zero results

Choose only one main search category firstThe database warns that only one category should be used at a time.
For owner name, start with the last nameThe property-record site recommends a last-name-only search when a full owner name does not match the way records were registered.
For location, use the property address—not the mailing addressCompare the street, parcel/MBL and ownership details before opening a record.
Use the record card for value questionsDanbury assessments are generally 70% of estimated fair market value; the current real-estate values are based on the 2022 revaluation unless a later property change applies.
Return to the tax portal to see what is owedAssessment value and tax balance are different records.
Vehicle no longer owned

Received a Danbury vehicle tax bill for a car you no longer have?

A vehicle tax bill can still be generated because Connecticut’s assessment date is October 1. Danbury says a vehicle registered on October 1 enters that Grand List and produces a bill the following July.

Cancel the Connecticut registrationDanbury says the registration must be cancelled to obtain a prorated adjustment when eligible.
Do not assume DMV tells the AssessorThe City’s page explicitly says DMV does not notify the Assessor’s Office that a registration has been cancelled.
Send proof directly to the AssessorDanbury requires two forms of documentation for a vehicle proration request. Use the City’s acceptable-document list for a sold, totaled, stolen or out-of-state vehicle.
Keep paying/collector questions separate from valuation correctionsThe Assessor changes the underlying vehicle assessment; the Collector handles the bill and payment after adjustments post.
Address, sale and escrow

Change an address, sold a house or paid off your mortgage?

Real-estate mailing addressDanbury requires a written address-change request. Use the Assessor’s Real Estate Change of Address form.
Personal-property mailing addressUse the separate personal-property change-of-address form on the Assessor’s Form Center.
Motor-vehicle mailing addressChange it through Connecticut DMV; vehicle tax records follow DMV registration information.
You sold the propertyOnce the deed is filed with the Town Clerk, the Assessor updates the land records. A tax bill may still refer to the earlier Grand List owner/date.
You paid off the mortgageCall the Tax Collector at 203-797-4541 so the City’s billing record can be updated to send the real-estate tax bill to you directly.
Your lender should pay from escrowCheck both the tax account and mortgage-servicer status before paying yourself to avoid a duplicate payment.

Assessor’s Office

Assessor: Donna Murphy, CCMA II

Phone: 203-797-4556

City Hall, 155 Deer Hill Avenue

Assessment basics

Danbury’s Assessor compiles real estate, business personal property and motor vehicles into the Grand List. Connecticut assessments are generally 70% of fair market value.

Assessment appeals

If the value is wrong, do not argue the assessment at the payment window

The Board of Assessment Appeals handles valuation appeals. Danbury’s current page says supporting documentation matters: comparable sales should be adjusted for comparability, and incorrect property-record data should be supported with proof.

2026 filing date has passed: For the 2025 Grand List, Danbury required in-person applications to be date-stamped by February 19, 2026 at 6:00 p.m., or mailed with a U.S. Postal Service postmark by February 20, 2026. Check the Board page for the next Grand List filing window rather than reusing those dates.
Motor-vehicle appeal limit: Danbury says September motor-vehicle appeals are now limited by State-law changes to MSRP; condition and high mileage are no longer adjustment grounds through that Board process.
Exemptions & relief

Veteran, elderly and disabled tax-relief questions belong with the Assessor

Danbury’s Assessor administers veteran, elderly and totally disabled programs. Some income limits and benefits change annually, so verify the current year’s application page rather than relying on an old tax bill or a prior-year amount.

Veterans should file DD-214/honorable-discharge papers with the Town Clerk before the applicable October 1 deadline
Income-based exemption programs use separate filing windows
A basic veteran exemption is non-income-based under the City’s published guidance
Blind, disabled and active-duty programs have separate eligibility rules
2025 elderly/disabled cycle: The City announced applications through May 14, 2026 for that cycle. That date has passed; use the Assessor for the next application period and current income limits.
Business personal property

Closed a business but still received a Danbury personal-property tax bill?

Danbury assesses personal property as of October 1 and bills the following July. If the business was active on October 1, the City says the full-year tax can still be due even if the business closed before the next July bill arrived.

Business was active on October 1The bill generally remains due for that Grand List year.
Business was not active on October 1Use the Assessor’s closed-business/termination process so the underlying record can be reviewed.
You already paidUse MyTaxBill payment records or contact the Collector with the bill year/account.
Value is wrongThe Assessor—not the Collector—handles the business personal-property assessment.
