Tax Lien Warning

⛔ Texas Attorney Fee Warning: After July 1, delinquent property taxes are referred to a collection attorney. An additional 15–20% attorney fee is added on top of your penalty and interest. On a $5,000 tax bill, this adds $750–$1,000 instantly. Pay before July 1 to avoid this.

2026 billing calendar

When Pitt County taxes are due—and when they actually become delinquent

“Due” and “delinquent” are not the same date in North Carolina. Pitt County’s 2026 guidance separates the billing date, due date, early-discount date and interest date.

July 2026 — annual notices mailedPitt County mails property-tax notices to the May 1 listed owner.
August 31, 2026 — early-payment discount cutoffThe 2026 rate table lists a 0.50% Pitt County discount and a 2.00% Greenville municipal discount through this date. Discounts do not apply to fees and assessments.
September 1, 2026 — taxes are dueThis is the statutory due date shown in Pitt County’s billing guidance.
January 5, 2027 — practical interest-free payoff deadlineThe full 2026 balance must be received by this date to avoid interest and enforced collection.
January 6, 2027 — delinquency beginsPitt County says 2% interest and enforced collection begin. An additional 0.75% is applied on the first day of each subsequent month.
Mailing close to a deadline? Pitt County notes that, effective December 25, 2025, the U.S. Postal Service requires customers to request a same-day postmark in person at a retail office. Do not assume dropping an envelope in a box creates the postmark date you need.
Budgeting options

Partial payments, payment coupons and tax prepayments

Use the 2026 coupons

Pitt County includes scheduled payment coupons with the annual bill for taxpayers who want to spread payments while reaching a zero balance by January 5, 2027.

Choose your own partial amount

myPittCounty allows a partial amount in the Payment Amount field. Partial payments do not extend the January 5 payoff deadline.

Prepay next year

Advance payments are accepted year-round. Call 252-902-3425 to create a preliminary bill; online payment can be used after the preliminary bill exists.

Prepayment micro-step: Have the parcel or bill number ready when asking for a preliminary bill so the advance payment is applied to the intended property.
Mortgage escrow

What to do when your mortgage company should pay the tax bill

Pitt County says most mortgage companies or tax servicers access county tax information electronically rather than waiting for a mailed copy of your bill.

Do not pay immediately just because you received the billA homeowner can receive a tax notice even when the lender is responsible for paying from escrow.
Check with the mortgage servicerConfirm that the parcel, bill year and tax amount are scheduled for payment.
Expect timing near the discount periodPitt County says escrow funds may reach a tax servicer as early as July, while the actual payment often reaches the County in the last week of August.
Verify the County account afterwardThe homeowner remains responsible for ensuring the account is paid on time, so check the tax account instead of relying only on the lender’s statement.
Avoid a duplicate payment. If the lender says a payment was sent but the County account is not updated, collect the lender’s payment date/reference and call the Collector before paying the bill yourself.

Value appeals and relief

If the bill is mathematically correct but the assessed value looks wrong

Paying the Collector and appealing the Assessor are different processes. An appeal challenges assessed value, situs, taxability or certain unpaid penalties; it is not based simply on inability to pay or the percentage increase from last year.

Real property

The regular 2026 Board of Equalization and Review filing period has passed. A later Notice of Value Change can carry its own appeal date, so follow the notice and contact the Assessor rather than assuming the general window applies.

  • Use photos, appraisals, comparable sales and repair estimates where relevant.
  • A separate form is generally required for each parcel.
  • Supporting documents should be supplied before the hearing.
Personal property / vehicles

Business or personal-property value, situs, taxability and certain penalty appeals generally have a 30-day window from the notice of value or bill when that bill acts as the notice. Registered-motor-vehicle review deadlines are also time-sensitive.

  • Vehicle evidence may include mileage and market-value support.
  • Pitt County’s appeal page says Kelley Blue Book values are not accepted for its vehicle appeal documentation; use the evidence the County requests.

Property-tax relief may be more useful than an appeal

Disabled veteran permanent-residence exclusion: first $45,000 of assessed value for qualifying applicants
Senior / permanently disabled homeowner programs can reduce or defer qualifying taxes
Present-Use Value can apply to qualifying agricultural, horticultural or forestry land
Many relief applications use a January 1–June 1 filing period
Late veteran-relief applications: Pitt County says applications filed June 2 through December 31 may be considered when there is a valid documented reason; applications after December 31 cannot be accepted for that current year.
Personal and business property

Annual listing rules that can create a tax bill or penalty

Real estate is not listed every year unless changes or improvements need reporting. Many types of personal and business property do require an annual listing.

January 1 — listing period beginsBoats, jet skis, certain mobile homes, unregistered/permanent-plate vehicles and business assets can require listing.
January 31 — normal listing deadlinePitt County states that personal-property listings must be submitted by January 31. A 10% penalty is added for each year a required listing is not filed by the deadline.
Business extension requestBusiness Personal Property extension requests must be made in writing and received before the regular January 31 listing period closes. Pitt County traditionally grants extensions through March 15.
Did not receive a listing form? If an account was active last year, Pitt County may mail a form automatically, but not receiving the form does not eliminate the owner’s responsibility to request and file it.
Tag & Tax Together

Registered vehicle taxes, value questions and refunds

Most registered motor-vehicle property tax in North Carolina is collected by NCDMV at registration or renewal through Tag & Tax Together rather than as an ordinary Pitt County real-estate bill.

Renewal / receipt

Use NCDMV for registration renewal and vehicle tax receipts. Pitt County receives the distributed property-tax revenue.

Value / exemption

Use Pitt County Assessor resources for qualifying value-review, military or disabled-veteran exemption questions.

Sold / moved vehicle refund

A qualifying refund request generally must be made within one year of plate surrender and include DMV Form FS20 plus a bill of sale or new-state registration.

Refund ordering rule: Pitt County says a vehicle property-tax refund is applied first to outstanding Pitt County property taxes. Any remainder is mailed after processing, which the County says can take about 8–10 weeks.
Past-due taxes

What Pitt County can do after a property-tax bill becomes delinquent

Once the account is delinquent, interest and statutory collection costs can grow beyond the original tax. Call for a payoff through a specific date instead of estimating the amount yourself.

Collection remedies listed by Pitt County
Collection actionHow it can workMicro-level warning
Wage garnishmentEmployer can be required to withhold 10% of gross pay each pay period until released.Interest and fees continue until the debt is resolved.
Bank attachmentBank may withdraw funds or place a 10-day hold before forwarding available funds. The bank can add its own processing fee.
Rent attachmentTenants can be required to send rent to the Tax Collector.A release is issued after the debt is resolved.
NC Debt SetoffState income-tax refunds or lottery winnings can be applied to delinquent tax debt.Program fees can apply.
Tax foreclosureReal property may enter a judicial foreclosure and auction process.Legal, advertising and court costs can be added.
Attachment service fees: Pitt County states a $30 fee can be charged per garnishment/attachment notice. Because a notice is served on both the taxpayer and the garnishee, the total County notice fees can be $60.
Paying someone else’s delinquent taxes does not buy the property. Anyone can make a payment, but tax payment alone does not transfer title or ownership rights.
New owner / sold property

Why a tax notice may still show the previous owner—or come to a seller

Real property sale

Pitt County says current-year real-property ownership transfers are updated through May. Depending on timing, a notice can still require careful parcel matching after a sale.

  • Match the parcel number and situs address, not only the owner name.
  • Check closing documents for tax proration.
  • Do not assume the closing attorney or mortgage company already paid the annual bill.
Personal property

Personal-property bills are generally sent to the person who listed the property as owner on January 1 of the tax year.

  • If you no longer owned the item on January 1, provide supporting sale, insurance, salvage or title-transfer documents.
  • If the property is taxed in another county, provide the out-of-county listing, bill or paid receipt requested by Pitt County.
Before paying
