Town of Madison Tax Collector Office: Pay Tax Bill & Hours

The Town of Madison Tax Collector handles municipal tax billing and collection for real estate, personal property and motor vehicle accounts. You can use the town’s online system to find a bill, check a balance, print tax records or make an electronic payment.

Before paying, check the bill year, list number and amount due. Madison has different installment rules for real estate, personal property, regular motor vehicle and supplemental motor vehicle bills.

Current tax-cycle note: Madison’s 2025 Grand List first installment was due July 1, 2026. The town extended the interest-free payment deadline to August 3, 2026 because of the calendar. Real estate and personal property accounts with a second installment generally have that installment due January 1. Always confirm the current balance in the official tax system before sending payment.

Online tax lookup

How to view or pay a Madison CT tax bill online

Madison’s official tax page links to the town’s online bill-search system. The system can be used to research balances and print tax bills as well as make a payment.

Open the Town of Madison tax-payment page

Start from the official Town of Madison website so you can confirm that you are entering the correct municipal tax system.

Search for the correct account

The town says bills may be searched by taxpayer name, property location, list number or account number.

Select the bill you intend to pay

Check the bill type, year and balance. Use the shopping-cart option beside the bill you want to add.

Choose the payment amount

The system may offer options such as paying the full balance or the amount currently due. Do not assume that a displayed annual balance is all due immediately.

Review the convenience fee

Electronic checks, debit cards and credit cards have different fees. Review the total before authorizing the transaction.

Save the confirmation

Keep the payment confirmation with your tax records, especially when paying close to a deadline or when a motor vehicle clearance is needed.

Paying by telephone: Madison lists Point & Pay telephone payments at 855-857-3353. The system asks for the 13-digit bill/list number. Convenience fees apply.
Online payment cost

Madison online tax payment fees

The convenience fee is charged for the electronic payment service. These fees are separate from the underlying municipal tax balance.

Town-posted electronic payment fees
Payment method Current posted fee Useful detail
Electronic check / ACH $2 per transaction up to $10,000 $10 per transaction when the payment exceeds $10,000
Debit card 0.85% $2 minimum
Credit card 2.5% $2 minimum
At the office: The Town of Madison states that credit and debit cards are not accepted at the Tax Collector counter. The town identifies personal checks, certified checks and bank checks as preferred payment methods.
Connecticut municipal tax calendar

When Madison property and vehicle taxes are due

Madison’s payment schedule depends on the type and amount of the tax bill. Real estate and personal property bills over $50 are normally divided into two installments. Smaller bills and regular motor vehicle taxes use a single payment schedule.

Madison tax installment schedule
Bill type Installment rule Normal due date
Real estate over $50 Two installments July 1 and January 1
Personal property over $50 Two installments July 1 and January 1
Real estate or personal property $50 or less One installment July 1
Regular motor vehicle One installment July 1
Supplemental motor vehicle One installment January 1
No separate January bill: Madison says the annual real-estate and personal-property mailing includes both July and January payment vouchers. A second bill is not normally mailed for the January installment.

2025 Grand List

For the 2025 Grand List, Madison mailed tax bills on June 18, 2026. The first installment was due July 1, 2026, and payments could be made or legally USPS-postmarked through August 3, 2026 without interest.

If you are preparing for a January installment, verify the current bill in the online system rather than waiting for another mailed notice.

Tax Payment Drop Slot

Madison provides a secured Tax Payment Drop Slot on the exterior wall of the Tax Collector’s Office, on the left side of the main entrance across from the Police Department. A payment deposited after regular business hours is credited on the next business day.

Do not use an after-hours drop near a deadline without checking the credit date. A payment placed in the slot after the office closes is not treated as received earlier that day.

Tax Collector

The Town of Madison directory identifies Christina Consiglio as Tax Collector. General taxpayer questions can be directed to the Tax Collector’s Office at 203-245-5641.

Pay by mail

How to mail a Madison tax payment

Make checks payable to the Town of Madison and mail the payment to P.O. Box 587, Madison, CT 06443. Include the appropriate bill stub or clearly identify the bill/list number so the payment can be applied to the correct account.

Write the correct bill/list number on the check when appropriate.
Include bill stubs for the accounts you are paying.
Use the correct Town of Madison mailing address.
Keep a copy or other record of the payment.
USPS postmark matters: Madison honors a qualifying U.S. Postal Service postmark for deadline purposes. The town warns that payments sent through a bank’s electronic bill-pay service may arrive by ordinary mail without a postmark. When no qualifying postmark exists, the date the town actually receives the payment can determine whether it is late.

If you want a receipt returned for a mailed payment, Madison instructs taxpayers to send the complete bill, the relevant stubs and a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Past-due bills

What happens when a Madison CT tax bill is late?

Under Madison’s published late-payment guidance, overdue municipal taxes are charged interest at 1.5% per month or fraction of a month from the original due date. The town states that the Tax Collector does not have authority to waive that statutory interest.

Interest rate

1.5% per month or fraction of a month on unpaid principal.

Minimum interest

The current tax notice states a $2 minimum interest charge.

Interest starts from

The original due date, not the day after the payment window closes.

This is why a bill paid just after the interest-free period can show more than 1.5% in interest. Madison explains that a July installment paid after the applicable August payment window is already treated as two months delinquent for interest calculation.

Not receiving a bill does not cancel the tax. Madison instructs taxpayers who did not receive a bill to contact the Tax Collector or retrieve the bill online.

TaxServ collection accounts

Madison contracts with TaxServ Capital Services for certain delinquent motor vehicle and personal property taxes. If you receive a TaxServ collection notice, the town directs you to deal with TaxServ regarding that account rather than assuming the ordinary town payment process will resolve the collection notice.

TaxServ lists a telephone number of 860-724-9100. Confirm that a notice is legitimate and matches your account before providing payment information.

Motor vehicle accounts

Motor vehicle taxes and Connecticut DMV clearance

Regular Madison motor vehicle tax bills are due in one installment on July 1. Supplemental motor vehicle bills are generally mailed near the end of December and are due January 1.

How long can a DMV tax clearance take?

Online payment

Madison says to allow about 48 business hours for an online payment to clear with the DMV.

Payment made in office

The town states that an in-office payment can take about 24 business hours to clear with the DMV.

All outstanding vehicle taxes matter: Madison states that all outstanding vehicle tax bills associated with your name must be paid in full before a release can be issued.

Sold, junked or no longer own the vehicle?

A change in vehicle ownership or registration can involve the Assessor rather than the Tax Collector. Madison directs residents who returned plates, sold a vehicle or junked a vehicle to the Assessor’s Office for assessment-related questions.

Assessor phone: 203-245-5652.

Collector vs. Assessor

Which Madison office should you contact?

1 Tax Collector

Contact the Tax Collector for billing, balances, payments, receipts, delinquent municipal taxes and payment-status questions.

2 Assessor

Contact the Assessor for property valuation, assessment records, exemptions and changes affecting the taxable assessment.

3 Senior Services

Madison directs older residents seeking certain local and state tax-relief programs to the Senior Center for application assistance.

Current Madison mill rate

The Town of Madison lists a 23.06 mill tax rate effective July 1, 2026. One mill represents $1 of tax for each $1,000 of taxable assessed value.

Simple example: An assessed taxable value of $100,000 at 23.06 mills produces $2,306 in annual tax before any applicable exemptions, credits or adjustments. Your actual bill should always be confirmed through the town’s records.
Tax relief

Senior and disabled homeowner tax relief in Madison

Madison maintains local tax-relief programs for qualifying elderly and totally disabled homeowners. These programs are administered separately from ordinary tax collection, so eligibility questions should not be treated as a request to the Tax Collector to reduce a bill.

The town’s current program information states that the local filing period runs from February 1 through May 15. Eligibility depends on factors such as age or qualifying disability, ownership and occupancy, residency, income and the specific program involved.

Application assistance: Madison’s current instructions direct applicants to contact the Madison Senior Center at 203-245-5627. Income documentation and other supporting records may be required.
Property ownership changes

New homeowners, mortgage escrow and missing tax bills

New homebuyers

Madison explains that municipal property taxes are paid in advance for the fiscal year. The July installment relates to the first half of the fiscal year and the January installment relates to the second half. Closing adjustments between buyer and seller do not replace the town’s actual tax bill.

If you recently purchased a property, review the closing statement and then check the official Madison tax account to confirm the next municipal installment. Questions about credits between buyer and seller belong with the closing attorney rather than the Tax Collector.

Your mortgage company stopped paying taxes

If an escrow account was closed or your mortgage was paid off, do not wait for a new bill to arrive. Madison advises taxpayers who become personally responsible for payments to contact the Tax Collector for a copy or retrieve the bill online.

You did not receive a bill

Call 203-245-5641 or use the online system to locate the account. Failure to receive the mailed bill does not eliminate the underlying tax obligation or statutory interest on a late payment.

Troubleshooting

Common Madison tax-payment problems

I cannot find my bill online

Try another supported search field such as taxpayer name, property location, list number or account number. If the account still cannot be located, call the Tax Collector before sending money.

My payment is not showing yet

Allow time for posting, especially after online payments, mailed checks, weekends or holidays. Keep your confirmation and contact the office if the balance remains incorrect.

I paid through my bank near the deadline

Bank bill-pay checks may not carry a USPS postmark. Madison warns that receipt by the town can control timeliness when there is no qualifying postmark.

The property value looks wrong

Assessment and exemption issues belong with the Madison Assessor, not the Tax Collector. The Tax Collector generally collects the bill produced from the assessment.

My registration is blocked

Check for every outstanding motor vehicle tax bill associated with your name. Paying only the most recent bill may not be enough for DMV clearance.

I received a delinquent-tax collection letter

Determine whether the account has been assigned to TaxServ and follow the contact instructions tied to that delinquent account.
