Town of Southbury Tax Collector Office: Pay Tax Bill & Hours

The Town of Southbury Tax Collector handles real estate, personal property and motor vehicle tax billing and collection. Use this guide to reach the official payment system, compare payment fees, check office hours, understand installment dates and choose the correct way to pay.

For the current 2026–2027 tax cycle, the Town mailed tax bills on June 29, 2026. The first installment was due July 1, 2026, and Southbury allowed payment through August 3, 2026 without interest or penalties.

January installment reminder: Southbury sends one annual tax bill. If a real estate or personal property bill is more than $100 and therefore has a January installment, do not wait for another bill to arrive. Keep the original bill or check the official online tax account before the January due date.

Primary task

How to pay a Southbury CT tax bill online

The Town links taxpayers to the Southbury Online Tax System for tax-account lookup and electronic payment. Use the official Town link or the Southbury-specific MyTaxBill page rather than paying from an unrelated search result.

Open the official Southbury tax system Start from the Town’s Tax Collector or Paying Taxes page, or use the Southbury-specific online tax system linked below.
Find the correct tax account Use the identifying information available on the tax bill or official account record. Confirm the taxpayer, property or vehicle account before continuing.
Review the balance and installment Make sure you are paying the correct tax type and installment. Real estate, personal property and motor vehicle accounts do not always follow the same installment pattern.
Choose the payment method Compare e-check, debit-card and credit-card service fees before submitting payment.
Review the final amount The Town does not keep the payment processor’s service fee. Check both the tax payment and the separate processing charge before authorizing the transaction.
Save proof of payment Keep the confirmation screen, transaction reference and bank or card record until the tax account shows the expected payment.
Payment cost

Southbury online and card payment fees

Southbury states that card companies and banks charge the processing fees and that the Town does not receive or retain any portion of those fees.

Payment fees currently published by the Town of Southbury
Payment method Published service fee Where available Before paying
Electronic check $1.00 per transaction Online / phone system Verify bank routing and account information before submitting.
Debit card $3.95 flat transaction fee Visa or Mastercard Compare this flat fee with the e-check fee.
Credit card 2.5% of payment; $2.00 minimum Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover Percentage fees increase with larger tax payments.
Cost check: For a larger property-tax installment, the $1 electronic-check fee can be substantially lower than a 2.5% credit-card service fee. Compare the final processor charge before submitting.
Tax calendar

Southbury property tax due dates and installment rules

The Tax Office sends one tax bill each year near the end of June. The number of installments depends on the tax type and, for real estate and personal property, the annual bill amount.

July 1 Real estate and personal property taxes are due. Bills totaling $100 or less are due in full. Bills over $100 may be split into two installments.
January 1 Second installment for real estate and personal property tax bills over $100.
Motor vehicle bills Regular motor vehicle tax bills are due in one installment on July 1 regardless of the amount due.
2026 first-installment calendar: Southbury states that tax bills were mailed June 29, 2026 and were due July 1, 2026. The Town allowed those taxes to be paid on or before August 3, 2026 without interest or penalties.
Do not expect a January reminder bill. Southbury’s current tax notice tells taxpayers to retain the annual bill because a second-installment bill is not sent for the January 1 installment.

Ways to pay

Online, phone, mail and in-person Southbury tax payments

Online

Use Southbury’s official online tax system. Electronic check, debit-card and major credit-card options are published by the Town, with processor fees.

By phone

Call 1-866-843-5096. Southbury says you should have the tax bill available before using the telephone payment service.

In person

The Tax Collector accepts checks, money orders, bank checks and qualifying card payments at Town Hall. Cash is accepted only up to $50.

By mail

Include the appropriate tax-bill stub for the period being paid. Do not send a payment without enough information for the Tax Office to identify the account.

Mail payment

Where to mail a Southbury tax payment

Southbury publishes two mailing routes. Include the correct payment stub with the check so the payment can be applied to the intended account and installment.

Lockbox processing address
Town of Southbury
Dept. 3610
P.O. Box 4110
Woburn, MA 01888-4110
Southbury mailing address
Town of Southbury
P.O. Box 467
Southbury, CT 06488
Deadline-sensitive mail: Do not assume the date you place a check in the mail is automatically the date the Tax Collector will treat as received. Verify the Town’s current payment-timing rule if mailing close to a delinquency date.
24-hour check drop

Southbury Town Hall tax payment drop box

A marked drop box is located on the side of Town Hall, accessed from the upper parking lot on the left side of the building. Southbury says checks may be placed in the box 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Do not put cash in the drop box. Payments deposited while the office is closed are received when the office reopens. If a tax deadline is imminent, factor that processing timing into your payment decision.

Pay a current Southbury tax bill at Ion Bank

Beginning July 1, 2026, Southbury permits current tax bills to be paid in person at the Southbury branch of Ion Bank. You do not need to be an Ion Bank customer.

Branch
Ion Bank
363 Main Street South
Southbury, CT
What to bring

Bring the payment stub and a check. The Town describes this option for current tax bills, so use the Tax Collector directly for delinquent or unusual accounts.

Before visiting the bank: Check the Town’s current Tax Collector notice for any updated bank-payment instructions and confirm the branch’s current operating hours separately.
Motor vehicle tax

Southbury motor vehicle tax bills

The Southbury Tax Collector also collects motor vehicle taxes. Regular motor vehicle bills are due in a single installment on July 1 regardless of the bill amount.

Regular motor vehicle bill

Due July 1. Use the official tax account to confirm the current balance before paying.

Vehicle or address record problem

Tax collection and vehicle-record corrections are different tasks. Use the Town’s motor vehicle information and DMV guidance when ownership, registration or address data needs correction.

Late taxes

What to do if a Southbury tax bill is overdue

Do not calculate a delinquent payoff from the original bill alone. Interest, collection costs or other charges may have been added since the original due date.

Payment date has passed Check the official tax account for the current amount and contact the Tax Collector if the balance or interest is unclear.
Bill was never received Use the online system or contact the Tax Collector rather than assuming the obligation disappeared because a paper bill did not arrive.
Account was sent for collection Additional collection fees can apply. Confirm the payoff route before sending money to an old address or previous payment channel.
Real estate lien question Contact the Tax Collector for the current balance and lien status rather than relying on a historic bill amount.
Troubleshooting

Common Southbury tax-payment problems

Online payment has not appeared Check the transaction confirmation and bank/card activity, then contact the Tax Collector with the date, amount and confirmation information before paying again.
You need a receipt Keep the electronic confirmation or cancelled check. If mailing a payment and you need a returned receipt, ask the Tax Office about its current receipt procedure before sending it.
Your mortgage company normally pays Check the official account and contact the mortgage servicer before submitting a duplicate payment.
The assessed value looks wrong Assessment questions belong with the Assessor, not the Tax Collector. Paying or disputing collection does not itself change the property’s assessed value.

Southbury mill rate

The Town publishes a mill rate of 25.4 mills for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026 and ending June 30, 2027.

Mill rate vs tax balance: The mill rate helps explain how a tax levy is calculated, but it is not a substitute for the official amount due. Use the Tax Collector’s current account record when deciding how much to pay.
