Shasta County Tax Collector: Pay Property Tax & Visit the Office

The Shasta County Treasurer-Tax Collector handles property tax collection for the county. Property owners can use the county’s official system to view or pay a tax account, pay by phone, mail a payment, or visit the Tax Collector counter in Redding.

Before paying, match the assessment number on the tax bill and review the payment method carefully because card, debit and e-check transactions can carry processing fees.

Use the county payment system for tax payments: TaxCollectors.org is an independent information website and does not collect Shasta County property taxes. Confirm the assessment number and amount due on the official Shasta County system before submitting money.

Official online payment

How to pay Shasta County property tax online

Shasta County’s official online property-tax page lets taxpayers search assessment information and continue to the payment system. The county advises taxpayers to have the tax bill available because the assessment number is the most direct way to locate the correct account.

Open the official county payment page Use the Shasta County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s View/Pay Property Taxes Online page rather than a third-party search result that merely discusses property taxes.
Locate the assessment number Find the assessment number printed on the tax bill. Shasta County shows assessment numbers in a structured format such as 123-456-789-654.
Search the tax account Enter the assessment number in the county search. A more complete number generally produces a more specific result.
Open the correct assessment Compare the displayed tax information with your bill before continuing. Do not assume a result is correct only because the owner or mailing information looks similar.
Select the payment method Review the amount due and the processing fee shown for the selected card, debit-card or e-check method before authorizing the transaction.
Keep the confirmation Save the confirmation number, but remember that Shasta County says the receipt remains conditional until the funds and payment are fully processed.
Posting is not immediate. The Tax Collector states that an electronic payment may take up to five business days to post. A confirmation number does not by itself mean the payment has fully cleared.

Ways to pay a Shasta County property tax bill

The Tax Collector offers several payment routes. The best option depends on how close you are to the delinquency deadline, whether you need proof of mailing, and whether you want to avoid a card-processing fee.

1 Online

Use the county payment page for credit card, debit card or eligible e-check transactions. Processing fees apply.

2 By phone

The county lists its interactive phone-payment number as 844-784-9715.

3 By mail

Mail a check or money order to the Treasurer-Tax Collector, PO Box 991830, Redding, CA 96099-1830.

Pay at the counter

The office accepts cash, checks, money orders and credit/debit cards at 1450 Court Street, Suite 227, Redding. Card-processing fees still apply.

Use the office drop box

Shasta County identifies a drop box in the second-floor lobby at the Administration Center near the Tax Collector office. Follow the county’s current payment instructions when using it near a deadline.

Do not mail cash. For mailed payments, the county instructs taxpayers to use a check or money order and include the assessment number. If available, include the payment stub from the tax bill.
Secured property taxes

Shasta County property tax due dates

Regular secured property taxes in Shasta County follow California’s standard two-installment schedule. The due date and the delinquency deadline are different, so paying after the due date does not necessarily mean a penalty has already attached.

Regular secured property-tax installment schedule
Installment Due Delinquent after What happens if late
First installment November 1 December 10 A 10% delinquent penalty applies after the deadline.
Second installment February 1 April 10 A 10% delinquent penalty applies, plus applicable delinquency costs.

The county states that electronic payments may be made through 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on the regular December 10 and April 10 delinquency dates. In-person deadlines and rules for mailed payments are different, so do not assume an online cutoff applies to another payment method.

Weekend or holiday rule: California property-tax deadlines can move to the next business day when the statutory delinquency date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday. Check the county’s current-year notice before relying on a shifted date.
You may pay both secured installments together. The Tax Collector’s published payment guidance allows both installments to be paid when the first installment is due.
Electronic payment costs

Online and card payment fees

Shasta County uses payment processors for electronic transactions. These processing charges are separate from the underlying property-tax amount and should be shown before you complete the transaction.

Published Point & Pay electronic-payment fees
Payment method Published fee Useful detail
Credit card 2.25% County guidance lists a $2.50 minimum fee for Point & Pay credit-card payments.
Debit card $3.95 flat fee Applied by the payment processor.
E-check $1.50 flat fee The county states this rate applies to eligible transactions of $100,000 or less.

The county also publishes a monthly-payment service through EasySmartPay with different terms and fees. Review that service separately before enrolling because it is not the same transaction as making a standard one-time tax payment through Point & Pay.

Check bank information carefully. Shasta County warns that failed electronic transactions can trigger a returned-payment charge. Do not treat the payment as complete until it has successfully processed.

USPS timing matters

Paying Shasta County property tax by mail

Mailing a check remains an option, but the mailing date can matter when you are close to a delinquency deadline. The Tax Collector warns that some bank bill-pay envelopes and other permit-imprint mail may not receive a conventional USPS postmark.

Make payment identifiable

Write the assessment number on the check and include the tax-bill payment stub when available. Make the payment payable as instructed by the Tax Collector.

Do not wait until the last minute

If a valid postmark is important, the county recommends using a mailing method that provides acceptable evidence of the mailing date.

Bank “bill pay” can still create a mailed check. Do not assume entering a payment online through your bank means Shasta County receives an electronic transaction that same day.
Delinquent & defaulted taxes

What to do if Shasta County property taxes are late

A missed regular installment can add penalties and costs. A property that remains delinquent can eventually become tax-defaulted, which is a more serious stage than simply missing the December or April installment deadline.

Recently missed an installment?

Check the current amount due with the Tax Collector. The regular delinquent penalty is generally 10%, with additional costs associated with an unpaid second installment.

Property is already tax-defaulted?

Ask the Tax Collector for a current redemption amount and whether the property still qualifies for an Installment Plan of Redemption.

Property is approaching a tax sale?

Contact the office promptly. Eligibility for an installment plan and redemption deadlines become more restrictive as the default ages and a sale approaches.

Payment failed electronically?

Do not rely only on the original confirmation. Check whether the county has posted the payment and ask what amount is now required.

Five-pay Installment Plan of Redemption

Shasta County describes a five-installment redemption plan for qualifying tax-defaulted property. A taxpayer generally must not already have taxes that have been defaulted for more than five years.

To open the plan, the county states that the taxpayer must make the required initial payment, including at least 20% of the total tax amount with applicable penalty and interest charges, and keep current-year property taxes paid by the required deadline. Interest continues on the unpaid defaulted balance.

Key Shasta County defaulted-tax plan points
Issue County guidance
Plan length Up to five installments under the Installment Plan of Redemption.
Initial amount At least 20% of the total tax amount including applicable penalty and interest charges.
Interest The county states that 1.5% per month continues on the unpaid balance.
Current taxes Current-year taxes must remain paid as required or the plan can default.
Starting the plan Contact the Tax Collector and request the Installment Plan of Redemption application.
Mortgage borrowers: The county recommends checking with the lender or mortgage company before entering a defaulted-tax installment plan because the lender may have requirements concerning delinquent property taxes.
Right office

Tax Collector vs. Assessor: who handles the problem?

The Tax Collector handles billing and collection. The Assessor handles property valuation and assessment information. Sending an assessment-value dispute to the Tax Collector can delay the answer because the collector generally does not set the assessed value.

For assessment questions, the Shasta County Assessor is also located in the County Administration Center at 1450 Court Street. The county publishes the Assessor’s main phone number as 530-225-3600.

Troubleshooting

Common property-tax payment problems

I did not receive a tax bill

Contact the Tax Collector and check the account. Failure to receive a bill does not automatically remove the responsibility to pay by the required deadline.

The online system is unavailable

Do not assume an outage extends the deadline. The county tells taxpayers to use another available payment method when the online and telephone systems are unavailable.

My confirmation exists but the account still shows unpaid

Electronic transactions can take several business days to post. Keep the confirmation and contact the Tax Collector if the payment fails or remains unresolved.

My mortgage was paid off

If the lender previously impounded taxes, ask whether it paid all current installments. A payoff of the mortgage does not necessarily mean every current property-tax installment has been paid.

The assessed value looks wrong

Start with the Assessor rather than the Tax Collector. Assessment disputes and payment collection are separate functions.

I cannot afford the defaulted balance in full

Ask the Tax Collector whether the property still qualifies for the Installment Plan of Redemption before the account reaches a stage where the plan can no longer be opened.
