New for 2026: current bills at Ion Bank
The Town’s 2026 PDF adds a convenient bank option, but it has strict limits. It is for current Southbury bills only—not late or past-due bills.
| Requirement | 2026 rule | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Branch | Southbury branch only, 363 Main Street South | Do not take the bill to another Ion Bank branch. |
| Payment | Check only | No cash or card through this Town bank-payment service. |
| Document | Bring tax bill stub(s) | The bank needs the matching current-bill stub. |
| Account status | Current bills only | If the July bill is now delinquent, use the Tax Collector/portal instead. |
| Customer status | No Ion Bank account required | The service is available to non-customers. |
Due dates, installments and the bill you must keep
Southbury mails only one main tax bill each year. For the 2025 Grand List, bills were mailed June 29, 2026.
How the paper bill is organized
Use for the July payment.
Keep for the January payment when a second installment applies.
Keep for your records.
Late taxes, interest and payment-timing traps
Southbury applies Connecticut statutory interest at 1.5% per month or any part of a month from the original due date, with a $2 minimum. The Tax Collector states that the office has no authority to waive this interest.
Bank bill-pay and telephone bill-pay warning
Payments created through a bank’s bill-pay service may arrive without a USPS postmark. Southbury says a no-postmark payment must actually be received by the last day to pay to count as timely.
The Town’s standing guidance suggests processing bank bill-pay before July 20 to reduce late-arrival risk.
The Town suggests processing before January 20 when using bank/telephone bill-pay for the January installment.

Tax receipts, payment records and address changes
The 2026 tax notice states that your cancelled check is your receipt.
Send the bill/payment stub and a self-addressed stamped envelope. The lockbox processing center does not automatically return a receipt.
The tax portal includes IRS Payment Records by year. Use them for payment-history lookup, not as tax-preparation advice.
The Town FAQ says taxes are collectible for 15 years from the due date and advises taxpayers to maintain their own receipts.
Moved? A postal forwarding request is not enough
The Town says tax-address changes must be made in writing to the Tax Collector. Do not assume a USPS change of address updates municipal tax records.
DMV release, sold vehicles and supplemental bills
Regular motor vehicles are assessed as of October 1 and the annual bill is due in full the following July. Vehicles registered between October 2 and the following July 31 can appear on a supplemental list, with the supplemental bill due January 1.
Immediate DMV clearance: choose the payment method before paying
| Payment | Immediate-release guidance | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Cashier’s check / money order in person | Listed by live portal for immediate clearance | Pay all vehicle taxes associated with the name/VIN and request release. |
| Online debit / credit card | Live portal says eligible for immediate DMV clearance | After paying online, contact the Tax Collector to request the DMV release. |
| Cash in person | Motor-vehicle FAQ lists cash for immediate release | Remember the Tax Office’s general cash-acceptance limit is $50; call first if the balance is higher. |
| Personal check | Not immediate | Town FAQ says a release cannot be given for 10 business days after deposit. |
| eCheck | Live portal says not immediate | Do not use when same-day/quick clearance is required. |
Vehicle sold, moved or no longer registered?
Mortgage escrow, property sale and real-estate liens
If you received the bill anyway, the Town says the lender may not have requested it. Contact the mortgage holder and forward the bill using the exact lender address/instructions.
Tell the Tax Office in writing that you are now personally responsible for the bill and request future tax bills directly.
The Tax Collector does not prorate closing taxes. Southbury says closing attorneys handle adjustments between seller and buyer.
The Town FAQ says real-estate liens are filed May 1 on properties with delinquent tax, after advance notice, with a $24 lien fee; all taxes, interest and fees must be paid for release.
Personal-property taxes, closed businesses and UCC liens
Personal-property bills are generally due July 1 and January 1 when the annual bill is over $100; bills of $100 or less are due in full July 1.
Southbury says if the July personal-property half is late, the January half becomes immediately due.
The bill is not prorated simply because the business later closed. The Town says the whole bill remains due.
Provide proof to the Assessor so the business can be removed from the upcoming Grand List.
Southbury Assessor database, GIS and property records
The Assessor and Tax Collector solve different problems. The Tax Collector tells you what is billed and paid; the Assessor maintains the values and property characteristics used to build the Grand List.

2026–27 Southbury mill rate and estimate formula
The Town lists a 25.4 mill rate for fiscal year July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027. A mill is $1 of tax per $1,000 of assessed value.
Tax sale, collection fees and liens
Southbury conducted a 2026 tax deed sale on June 25, 2026 at Town Hall. That date has passed, so an older bidder notice is not a current payment deadline for your account.
