Pay a New Kent Tax Bill or Fix the Record Behind It
New Kent does not use a separate local office titled “Tax Collector.” The Treasurer collects taxes, while the Commissioner of the Revenue handles assessments, parcel records, personal-property corrections and relief programs.
This guide puts the 2026 November 1 deadline, payment portal, reassessment records, vehicle corrections and current office rules into one task-first workflow.

November 1.
New Kent moved the annual tax deadline to November 1
The Board of Supervisors permanently moved annual real-estate and personal-property taxes from December 5 to November 1 beginning in 2026. The County says 2026 bills should arrive in early-to-mid September, and mortgage/escrow companies were notified of the change.
How to pay New Kent County taxes online without using the wrong account
New Kent switched tax systems in 2025. The Taxpayer Portal says new tax account numbers were issued in October 2025; the new numbers are eight digits and begin with “1.”
Account number, password reset or missing tax records?
The portal says current tax account numbers are eight digits and begin with “1.” Use the latest statement or call 804-966-9615 ext. 5.
Inactive/unconfirmed portal registrations can be automatically removed. The portal advises trying registration again when a reset produces no response.

Use the Commissioner of the Revenue for assessment and parcel records
The Commissioner maintains the real-estate assessment information and land book that feed the Treasurer’s tax bill. For a wrong value, wrong owner, parcel-data question or factual property-record error, start here—not at the payment counter.

What New Kent’s 2026 reassessment guides say to check before disputing a value
The 2026 reassessment is effective January 1, 2026. New Kent’s official appeal guide says a factual property-record error does not require a normal value appeal; errors can be reported and corrected during the year. The ordinary Commissioner appeal period is complete, and the Board of Equalization deadline was April 30, 2026.
The two legal value-appeal bases in the County guide
The assessment is materially above or below what the property should sell for as of the January 1 effective date.
Your assessment is inconsistent with genuinely similar New Kent properties because comparable characteristics are being treated differently.

New Kent County 2026 tax rates
The Board of Supervisors sets rates annually. The Commissioner currently lists these 2026 rates per $100 of assessed value.
| Category | 2026 rate | Useful context |
|---|---|---|
| Real estate | $0.58 | Real estate is assessed and taxed at 100% of estimated fair market value. |
| Mobile home | $0.58 | Same listed rate as real estate. |
| Tangible personal property | $3.75 | Assessment questions go to the Commissioner. |
| Motor vehicles | $3.10 | New Kent is non-prorating; January 1 ownership matters. |
| Boats / campers / RVs | $3.25 | Separate listed personal-property category. |
| Handicap-equipped vehicles | Exempt | Confirm qualification with the Commissioner. |
| Aircraft | $0.75 | Assessment category rate. |
| Machinery & tools | $0.75 | Business assessment category. |
Review 2026 vehicle and personal-property records before paying the annual bill
New Kent mailed annual Personal Property Declarations in June 2026 and asked residents to submit changes by July 1, 2026. That deadline has passed, but the County’s software-conversion notice makes a late record review especially important before the annual bill is paid.
The Commissioner warned that some vehicles previously marked “sold” in the old system did not update correctly during the software conversion. If one still appears, contact the Commissioner rather than just paying the bill.
The new system may display all personal-property items, including exempt vehicles. The County says appearing on the declaration does not itself remove the tax exemption.
The new Taxpayer Portal allows residents to set up a profile, review items and report changes using the new account number printed on the declaration.
DMV hold after tax payment and the current New Kent DMV Select hours
The Taxpayer Portal says a DMV Hold/Stop applied to a delinquent personal-property account is removed on the next business day after payment.
If the account is more than three years old, the portal warns that its displayed delinquent balance does not include third-party collection fees. Call the Treasurer for the true payoff first.
Monday–Friday: 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.
It is housed in the Commissioner of the Revenue office at 12007 Courthouse Circle.
What DMV Select can—and cannot—do
| Can process | Cannot process |
|---|---|
| Vehicle titles and registrations, license plates, permits/placards, transcript requests, return checks and voter-registration applications. | Driver licenses, learner permits or identification cards. |
| Eligible walk-in DMV Select transactions. | Online or franchise-dealership work. |
New Kent lets taxpayers make voluntary prepayments throughout the year
Real-estate and personal-property prepayments reduce the balance due on November 1. The County says payments can be made at any time and in any amount.
2026 elderly/disabled relief deadline passed, but exemption questions still belong with the Commissioner
New Kent’s annual elderly/totally disabled real-estate relief application deadline was May 1, 2026. The program can provide up to $1,600 of relief for qualified applicants. Other programs include disabled-veteran exemptions and military personal-property exemptions.
| Requirement | Published rule |
|---|---|
| Age / disability | 65 or older, or totally and permanently disabled, by December 31 before the taxable year. |
| Ownership | Title or partial title held January 1 of the taxable year. |
| Residence | Property must generally be the qualifying owner’s sole dwelling, subject to the County’s medical-facility exception. |
| Individual gross income | Not more than $35,000. |
| Combined gross income | Not more than $50,000, subject to listed exclusions. |
| Combined financial worth | Not more than $150,000, excluding the dwelling and up to 10 acres on which it sits. |
Sold the property, bought recently or rely on mortgage escrow?
Real-estate bills are set up in the name of the January 1 owner. The Treasurer FAQ says to use the settlement statement, forward the bill to the current owner or contact the closing agent.
The tax ticket can still show the January 1 owner. Compare the settlement statement, Vision record and Treasurer account rather than assuming the tax was omitted from closing.
The County says mortgage/escrow companies were notified of the new November 1 due date. Still verify the lender’s scheduled payment and the Treasurer’s posted history before sending a duplicate payment.
No tax bill received? New Kent still requires the taxpayer to obtain the amount due
The Treasurer FAQ says failure to receive the annual bill does not remove the taxpayer’s obligation to obtain the information and pay by the deadline. Penalty and interest are not waived merely because the bill was not received.
Before visiting 12007 Courthouse Circle
The Treasurer and Commissioner of the Revenue are both in the County courthouse/administration complex, so a payment question that turns out to be an assessment problem can be routed without sending you to a different county address.

New Kent County tax FAQs
Who is the New Kent County tax collector in Virginia?
New Kent County does not use a separate office titled Tax Collector for local real estate and personal property taxes. The Treasurer collects taxes and handles balances, payments and receipts. The Commissioner of the Revenue handles assessments, property records, vehicle corrections and tax-relief programs.
How do I pay New Kent County taxes online?
Use the official New Kent County Taxpayer Portal. Quick Pay can be used without registering when you have the current tax account number. A registered portal account adds scheduled e-check payments, electronic billing, tax history and account-management services. The portal lists e-check as free and adds a processor convenience fee to card payments.
When are New Kent County real estate and personal property taxes due in 2026?
Beginning in 2026, New Kent permanently changed the annual due date from December 5 to November 1. For the 2026 tax year only, the County says no penalty is assessed if the full balance is paid by December 5, 2026. If any balance remains on December 6, a 10% penalty applies based on the original balance due after November 1.
What are the New Kent Treasurer’s Office hours and phone number?
The Treasurer’s Office is at 12007 Courthouse Circle, New Kent, VA 23124. Phone: 804-966-9615. Normal hours are Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m.–4:15 p.m. Cashier windows close at 3:30 p.m. on the last business day of each month.
How do I search New Kent County property assessment and tax records?
Use the Taxpayer Portal for tax bills, balances, payment history and tax history. Use the Commissioner of the Revenue Parcel Data page, Vision Government Solutions database and CivQuest Atlas GIS for ownership, assessed value, parcel details, sales, transfers, land books and mapping. The online real estate assessment data is effective January 1, 2026.
Who handles New Kent County tax assessments?
The Commissioner of the Revenue, Laura Ecimovic, handles assessment functions rather than the Treasurer. The office is at 12007 Courthouse Circle, Room 202. Main phone: 804-966-9610. Real Estate: 804-966-9611.
What is the final 2026 New Kent County real estate tax rate?
The final 2026 real estate tax rate listed by New Kent County is $0.58 per $100 of assessed value. An earlier 2026 reassessment report used a $0.54 equalized rate for reassessment analysis, but that was not the final adopted 2026 rate.
What if my 2026 New Kent personal property declaration or vehicle list is wrong?
Contact the Commissioner of the Revenue at 804-966-9610. New Kent warned in June 2026 that some vehicles previously marked sold did not transfer correctly during a software conversion and that exempt vehicles may still appear on the declaration without losing their exemption. The 2026 declaration correction deadline was July 1, so late corrections should be discussed with the Commissioner before the annual bill is paid.
How quickly is a New Kent DMV hold removed after delinquent personal property tax is paid?
The New Kent Taxpayer Portal says a DMV Hold/Stop applied to a delinquent personal property tax account is removed on the next business day after payment. Very old delinquent balances can omit third-party collection fees from the displayed portal total, so call the Treasurer before paying an account more than three years old.
Can I still appeal or correct my 2026 New Kent real estate assessment?
The normal 2026 Commissioner appeal period is complete and the Board of Equalization filing deadline was April 30, 2026. However, New Kent’s official appeal guide says factual property-record errors can be reported and corrected during the year. Contact Real Estate at 804-966-9611 for the current correction route.
