Pay, Search or Fix a Stamford Tax Account
Use the correct Stamford system for the task: the tax-billing portal for balances and payments, the Assessor database for property values and field cards, or the Tax Collection office for posting, interest, refunds and DMV clearance.
This guide explains what to enter, what each record means, which office controls the issue and what to verify before paying, mailing, appealing or visiting Government Center.
Current deadline status — August 4, 2026:
Stamford’s dated 2026 notice required July 1 taxes to be received or postmarked by August 3, 2026 to avoid interest. Unpaid July bills are now delinquent. Request a live payoff because statutory interest runs from the original July 1 due date.

Tax Lien Warning
⛔ Texas Attorney Fee Warning: After July 1, delinquent property taxes are referred to a collection attorney. An additional 15–20% attorney fee is added on top of your penalty and interest. On a $5,000 tax bill, this adds $750–$1,000 instantly. Pay before July 1 to avoid this.

Which Stamford search do you actually need?
1
Tax bill, balance or receipt
Use MyTaxBill to find real estate, personal property, motor vehicle and supplemental motor vehicle bills.
2
Property value or field card
Use the Vision Assessor database for assessed value, appraisal, ownership history, parcel and building details.
3
Deed, mortgage or recorded lien
Use Stamford Town Clerk land records. A tax bill or field card is not the recorded land-record file.
Fast rule:
“What do I owe or did I pay?” means Tax Collection. “Why is the value, owner, vehicle or exemption wrong?” means Property Assessment.
Jump to the Stamford tax task
The sections follow real user actions rather than repeating similar keywords.
Official payment workflow
Search and pay City of Stamford taxes online
Open Stamford’s official tax portal
Use the Stamford MyTaxBill page, not a search ad, assessor field card or WPCA sewer portal.
Select the correct bill type
Check real estate, personal property, motor vehicle and supplemental motor vehicle records. One account or tax year may not show every open bill.
Search with the identifier from the bill
Real estate commonly uses the Unique ID; motor vehicle uses the Account No.; personal property uses the tax year and Tax ID.
Match the owner, property or vehicle
Verify tax year, installment, bill type, address, name and amount before adding a bill to payment.
Review every open balance
The phone IVR may report only the oldest delinquent real-estate or personal-property tax. Use the web portal or office for a complete payoff.
Choose the payment method
Compare the 95-cent e-check fee, 2.99% card fee and $4.95 Visa debit fee before submitting.
Save proof and recheck posting
Keep the confirmation, amount, bill type, tax year and payment date. Recheck when the payment is needed for DMV, a closing, refinance or business record.

How to use the Stamford Tax Assessor database
The City-linked Vision database can be searched by Stamford street address or owner name. It is useful for assessment figures and property information, but it is not the tax-payment ledger.
Search the street address first
Use the Stamford property address rather than the owner’s mailing address. Remove unnecessary punctuation or unit formatting if no result appears.
Try the owner name
Use the owner of record shown on city or closing documents. Recently recorded transfers may not appear immediately in every city system.
Open the likely parcel
Match location, owner, map-block-lot, account or parcel details before relying on the field card.
Separate appraisal from assessment
The database states that assessed value represents 70% of fair market value. Do not multiply the appraisal and mill rate as though appraisal were the taxable assessment.
Review land and improvements
Check the valuation year, land, improvements, total, building count, sale history and property characteristics.
Use the right next office
Contact Property Assessment for incorrect value, property facts, exemption or appeal issues. Contact Tax Collection for the billed amount or payment status.
Valuation dates:
The database says the current base revaluation was effective October 1, 2022 and the next scheduled citywide revaluation is October 1, 2027. Later valuation years may reflect physical property changes.
Pay by phone without entering the wrong identifier
Stamford’s automated tax-payment number is 844-543-1263. The number you enter depends on the bill type.

Stamford tax due dates and the current late-payment status
July 1, 2026 — taxes became due
First-half real estate taxes were due. Personal property and motor vehicle bills were payable in full.
August 3, 2026 — final no-interest date in the dated notice
The 2026 notice required payment to be received or postmarked by this date. The usual generic date shifted because of the calendar.
August 4, 2026 — unpaid July bills are delinquent
Interest is calculated from July 1, not merely from August 4. Obtain a current payoff before paying.
January 1, 2027 — next standard billing event
The second half of real estate tax and supplemental motor vehicle tax are normally due. Use the future dated notice for the exact last day without interest.
Why the old page was unsafe:
A generic city FAQ says August 1, but Stamford’s dated 2026 notice specifically says August 3, 2026. A deadline tool that ignores weekends or official notices can create a false late or on-time result.
Missing bill rule:
Failure to receive a bill does not remove the tax or statutory interest. Search online or request a bill from Tax Collection.
Mail tax payments
Collector of Taxes

Do not use the WPCA address:
Property-tax payments and sewer user charges have different accounts and mailing instructions. A payment sent to the wrong system can be delayed or misapplied.

Issue
Official rule
What to do
Interest
1.5% per full or partial month from the original due date; $2 minimum.
Request a payoff calculated through the planned payment date.
Interest waiver
The city says the Tax Collector has no authority to waive statutory interest.
Do not rely on a verbal estimate or generic calculator.
Returned payment
$20 fee.
Correct the payment and ask whether new interest has accrued.
Real estate lien
Liens are filed in May after notice; current dedicated fee page lists a $24 lien fee.
Pay tax, interest and applicable fees before requesting release.
Building permit
Past-due real estate taxes can cause permit denial.
Clear or formally address the account before permit work.
Business personal property
UCC lien, permit/license action or Alias Tax Warrant may follow.
Contact Tax Collection before ignoring a notice or making an incomplete payment.
Motor vehicle
DMV block and outside collection may apply.
Pay all tax, interest and fees, then follow the clearance timing.
Collection-fee conflict on official pages:
Stamford’s Delinquent Taxes page says a 14% agency fee for motor vehicle accounts delinquent one year, while the dedicated Interest & Fees page lists 15%. Do not calculate the fee yourself; request the live payoff from the city or authorized collector.
Delinquent payoff script
“Please confirm every open bill for [name/account], the payoff through [date], all interest and fees, whether a lien or collection agency is involved, and whether this payment will clear DMV or another city restriction.”
Stamford motor vehicle taxes and DMV registration release
Search every vehicle bill and year
Check regular and supplemental motor vehicle accounts. More than one vehicle or year may be open.
Pay the full delinquent amount
DMV clearance requires all tax, interest and fees to be paid.
Choose the payment method by urgency
In-office cash, money order or bank check is processed for clearance in 24–48 hours.
Allow online processing time
Online credit card, debit card or e-check requires three business days before clearance is issued.
Allow personal-check hold time
The city lists a five-day waiting period for personal checks.
Contact Assessment for a wrong vehicle bill
A sold, totaled, moved, stolen or out-of-state vehicle may require an assessment adjustment and supporting documents, not merely payment.
Clearance is not immediate.
Do not schedule a DMV visit based only on payment confirmation. Confirm that the city has processed the release.
How Stamford assessment and mill rates create the tax bill
The Assessor determines the taxable assessment. The Board of Finance sets the mill rates. The Tax Collector applies the resulting bill and collects payment.
Basic calculation:
assessed value × applicable mill rate ÷ 1,000. Use the district shown for the parcel and confirm whether an additional Downtown Special Services District rate applies.

Real estate District A
25.14
Use only when the Assessor record shows District A.
Real estate District B

Real estate District C
24.31
Do not choose a district based on ZIP code alone.
Real estate District CS
24.72

Assessment vs tax:
An assessment can fall while a tax bill rises if the applicable mill rate changes. The Board of Assessment Appeals hears assessment disputes, not objections to the city budget or mill rate.
Assessment appeal
Board of Assessment Appeals: current Stamford process
Real estate and personal property
The city generally makes forms available February 1–20, with a February 20 filing deadline. If the Grand List receives an extension, the period shifts to March 1–20. Always use the current form.
Motor vehicle
The Board page says hearings for vehicles on the 2025 Grand List will be held in September 2026 and directs taxpayers to check in August 2026 for current information and the form.
Evidence that can make an appeal useful
Real-estate appraisal tied to the valuation date
Comparable sales from the relevant period
Photos showing condition or property facts
Deed restrictions or easements
Vehicle bill of sale or mileage proof
Agent authorization when owner is not appearing
Do not argue only that the tax is too high.
The hearing focuses on whether the assessed value or exemption decision is wrong. Evidence should relate to the assessment date.
The city says a complete refund or transfer request can take up to 12 weeks after every required document is received.
Complete and sign the official application
A refund or transfer cannot be processed from an informal email alone.
Mark a transfer request clearly
Write “TRANSFER” in the upper-right corner when money should be applied to another current or delinquent tax.
Attach payment proof
Provide front and back of canceled checks, validated receipts, or a bank statement showing name, date and amount.
For online payment, attach the full trail
Include the email confirmation and the card or bank statement showing the charge.
Obtain a payer authorization letter when needed
If an attorney, bank, mortgage company or another person paid, the city requires a letter on that payer’s letterhead confirming who should receive the refund or transfer.
Mail the complete package
Incomplete submissions do not begin the processing period.
Refund mailing address

New owner, escrow problem or tax bill not received
Recently bought property
Search the tax account yourself. A closing proration may only move money between buyer and seller; it does not prove that the city was paid.
Mortgage company should pay
Check the portal and ask the lender for the payment date, amount, tax account, confirmation and check details.
Owner name has not updated
Use the address or parcel to locate the record. Recorded ownership and tax/assessment systems may update on different schedules.
Bill went to the wrong address
Notify Tax Collection promptly and use the official real-estate bill address-change route.
Payment appears twice
Do not assume an automatic refund. Gather both payment records and use the refund/transfer process.
No bill arrived
Failure to receive the bill does not stop interest. Search or request a replacement before the deadline.
Save the closing statement
Confirm whether taxes are escrowed
Search before July and January
Check WPCA separately
Keep city and lender payment proof
Update the billing address promptly
Separate city charges
Property tax, sewer assessment and WPCA are not the same bill
Property tax
Real estate, personal property, motor vehicle and supplemental motor vehicle bills use the tax portal.
Sewer assessment / connection
Tax Collection handles assessments assigned when new sewer benefits or additional connected units are created. These are generally due November 1.
WPCA user charge
A separate sewer-use bill based on WPCA rules and account information. It follows the property and uses separate payment instructions.
Closing and landlord check:
Search the property tax account and WPCA account separately. One paid balance does not prove the other is clear.
No bill in MyTaxBill
Try another tax type, year or identifier. For recent ownership changes, search by property details and call if the account remains unclear.
Phone payoff seems too low
The IVR may show only the oldest delinquent real-estate or personal-property tax. Search online or ask staff for every open bill.
Portal says paid but DMV is blocked
Confirm the payment method, processing period and whether all vehicle years and fees were paid.
Assessment database shows a wrong feature
Save the field card and contact Property Assessment with documents or photos. The Tax Collector cannot edit property facts.
Lender payment is missing
Ask the lender for the disbursement page, check number, date, amount and tax account. Do not pay twice before the city researches it.
Collection notice has a different fee
Official city pages conflict on the motor-vehicle collection percentage. Verify the collector and request a current itemized payoff.
Wrong municipality
Do not pay Stamford when the property or vehicle tax belongs to Norwalk, Bridgeport, Danbury or another town.
Need legal ownership proof
Use recorded Town Clerk land records, not only an assessor field card or tax bill.
Useful office script
“I am calling about [real estate / personal property / motor vehicle] account [ID] for tax year [year]. Please confirm every open bill, current payoff, whether payment [confirmation/check] posted, and whether I need Tax Collection, Assessment, WPCA or the Board of Assessment Appeals.”
